I'm looking for a replacement pin for an old 4+. It has riggers where the
pin screws directly into the outermost part of the rigger, rather than
fitting into a slot. I think it's 9/16" diameter, whereas all the ones I can
find are 13mm and mainly fit the slot-type riggers.

I've tried various boat makers and rowing parts suppliers in the UK and USA
with no success so far.

I'm hoping that someone out there might have an idea where I might be able
to get a new one ?

I think it's an Aylings shell - given its age it must be one of the earliest
composite boats.

It's not in great condition and I'm not sure if the riggers are the original
ones...

From what you've described it sounds very like one of the old
1978-1982 Carbocraft / Pre-Aylings composite fours from the late 70s /
early 80s - quite a flat bottomed shape with either a complex rounded
cox-seat or a very prominent splash board at the bows (and they are
very long for a coxed four). If so the rigging is probably either
Carbocraft or Neaves (I think he did the in -house Carbocraft riggers
before going independent when they went bust) - and usually there will
be a label on the rigger somewhere saying one of those two names. Are
there any photos of this boat online somewhere?

Usual clues : measurements - 67.5 or 68 centimetre rigger bolt to
rigger bolt with 75mm separation of the two rigger bolts on the main
foot ; and the riggers are usually a dull aluminium colour with a
metal or plastic pipe clamp at the outboard end, into which is
inserted a turned Aluminium rod with the pin threaded through a hole
which is slightly angled from the vertical with a plastic moulding
around the base of the pin and some large aluminium hex-bolts which
either act as lock nuts or height adjusters. The killer on these
tends to be either that the aluminium insert corrodes into the rigger
frame off vertical and then the rigger breaks when you try to re-pitch
using the big pipe method - or that the large aluminium top-nut either
corrodes immovably into the pin so that you can't undo it - and often
it snaps off leaving you with an unusable pin. The joys of scrapheap
challenge boats!

If you draw a blank contacting Neaves (they will apparently still make
them on special order - "Carbocraft type pins") - drop me an Email as
we have a few of these as spares that I've acquired for Dundee over
the years and I may be able to rustle one out of the spare parts
buckets. The hotmail address above won't work, mind you, so try
replying here first in case we need to establish exactly what it is
you are looking for.

Petr - you're in Cambridge aren't you? - name looks familiar. Try
Bertie Constable, biggest hoarder of spare parts in the known
universe. I haven't got a number for him, but Paul Knights at Queens'
BH should be able to help you with one.
