I am in the process of doing some winter repairs to my single. One of
the things I need to do is replace the hull tape. I have removed the
old tape and the nasty sticky residue it leaves behind (white spirit
is a good solvent - as indicated on the Tesa tape website). Grateful
for any hints and tips please as to the best method of getting the new
tape on accurately and evenly.
Thanks
Rob

I have done this on many boats and the method I use is as follows:-
First apply the deck 'canvas' and get it evenly stuck down on double sided
tape. Trim the edges with Stanley knife or scissors. You can leave say 1/8"
to turn down if you like or you can trim flush with the edge of the gunwhale
because the double sided tape is holding the canvas stretched tight..
Get your tape and test a piece to see how far it is going to overlap
onto the deck canvas while still covering the edge of the canvas, leaving
enough extra width to stick firmly to the side of the boat.
.Let us say for example that it has to overlap onto the deck by 1/2". Cut
little squares of masking tape about postage stamp size and stick them to
the canvas so one edge is exactly 1/2" from the deck edge.
Put one every foot or so all the way to bow or stern.
Then lay your deck tape exactly up to the edges of the little bits of
masking tape to give you an exactly even line along the edge of the deck.
Then turn down the projecting edge and stick it to the side of the hull.
Remove bits of masking tape after the deck tape is on.
If you don't take the trouble to something like this the width of tape on
the canvas may vary and this looks awful.

My web page on the whole canvas-replacing process has a bit of advice.

Thank you both. Just what I needed.
Much appreciated
