PANKAJ DOSHI: 1) Doink. Sorry, but a clown in wrestling is just sick and
wrong. 2) Duke "The Dumpster" Droese. The WWF's "occupational" gimmicks
are really bad, and this was one of the worst. At least Bob Holly "is
taking his gimmick seriously," (from the back page of the 5/30 WON). Are
the fans really supposed to believe that an ordinary garbage man would be
skilled enough to become a professional wrestler?
3) Irwin R. Schyster. Another bad "occupational" gimmick.
Like this one, I voted all WWF for most of the "worst" categories.
The WWF has been gradually improving since they began pushing Michaels,
the Harts, Waltman, et al. based on workrate, but it's still pretty bad.
TREVOR BARRIE: Same story as with worst heel, but more so ... the WWF
churns out so many stupid gimmicks that picking three is almost impossible.

OTTO HEUER: Gawd it's hard not to include characters like Doink the Clown,
but with the gems that Unca Vinnie came up with this year (The Dumpster,
Abe Schwartz, Bastion Booger), Doink didn't even make my list!
HERB KUNZE: For me, this goes to gimmicks which hurt the wrestling.
That means Undertaker gets first and Doink gets second. Third goes
to Prince Kharis. At least in the third case, SMW realized that the
gimmick was not working and got rid of it quickly. Still, while it
was around the TV show was terrible whenever Kharis appeared.
WOJO: (Dink, Meng, Caning matches) Dink and Meng are obvious wastes.
The ECW promoting these lame matches is a joke.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Whew, something stinks. Oh wait, that's Duke
Droese's gimmick.
Worst Wrestling Move

This shouldn't be given to a move that was flubbed by a wrestler
- the move was performed correctly, but was just too stupid for words.
This move should probably be a "finishing" move or something that was
meant to be spectacular.

PAUL HERZOG: I remember when Backlund's chicken-wing cross-face looked
painful. Crush's compactor head-vise is ridiculous, and Hogan's leg drop
is one of the all-time classic examples of truly pathetic.
HERB KUNZE: Every time Undertaker does a zombie sit-up, if other people
are in the room I've got to try to explain it and if nobody's around
I check to make sure I got off lucky. It's absolutely the worst spot
to explain since it insults the intelligence of anybody with half a
brain. UT's choke gets second. Third goes to Backlund's "New Generation"
chicken wing. When he last used it, at least it seemed legit and probably
unbreakable. Now it looks stupid.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Who would have thought Crush would augment his
award-winning head vice with an even more inane heart punch? Bravo,
Crush, you get Number 1 *and* 2!

TREVOR BARRIE: I saw a lot of bad matches this year, but nothing came
close to the crap that was Undertaker-Undertaker. Even the Undertaker
fans I know agree that this match sucked.
PAUL HERZOG: Duggan taking the U.S. title at Fall Brawl was one of the
biggest insults I've ever seen, and a slap in the face to Steve Austin,
one of the few talents that WCW has left. The other two involve a gimmick
that has long worn its welcome: the Undertaker. Undertaker v. Yokozuna
was an insult to anyone over the age of 10 or IQ of 50. Undertaker v.
Undertaker, was, well, the same thing.
OTTO HEUER: Gawd... there were just too many to choose from this year!
That's a really baaaaad sign. Any reason this category wasn't split into
North American and non-North American?
HERB KUNZE: First is easy: Undertaker vs. Yokozuna at the Rumble. Watching
UT get killed and float away with Vince yelling "He's levitating!" while
we could all see the cables was a little too much. I'm sure that the
double UT match would get second had I seen it, but the Rumble was enough
for me to swear off WWF PPVs. Second goes to the 4 Doinks fiasco at
Survivor Series. That was also unpardonable. Third goes to the
BattleBowl match that had Dustin & one Kong vs. Equalizer & another
Kong. This was the worst WCW match of the year with practically
every spot blown by the three non-wrestlers of the four.
GIANLUCA MILANDRI: The Yoko vs. Mabel match was a very very stupid one,
because it went for over 15 minutes with the two fat guys using only
their belly to manhandle their opponent down! It was an easy -*** match
WOJO: I almost fell asleep watching Regal and Inoki doing wrestling moves
for 5 minutes. Dusty was awful, and Duggan winning the title is a a last
minute schedling was terrible.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Duggan/Austin in 4? seconds was the Hogan/Yokozuna
of '94, but it probably won't win, although it deserves to.
Worst Feud

DON DEL GRANDE: After the Perfect screwjob on Luger at WrestleMania, did
Luger and Perfect ever wrestle each other before Perfect left?
PAUL HERZOG: Doink v. Bam Bam Bigelow was the worst: yeah, let's have
Bigelow, one of the great talents in this business, be afraid of a
midget with a bucket of water. Yeah, whatever. Undertaker v. Undertaker
was executed wrong in every regard and drawn out about 3 months too long
to attempt to coincide with some Domino's promotion. And Jerry Lawler
having to apologize for hitting Duke Droese with a trashcan. Hey, fuck you.
HERB KUNZE: Undertaker vs. Yokozuna gets first place. The build up was
unbelievable and terrible and the match they delivered stunk. Second
goes to UT vs. UT. I didn't see the match, but the build was all
screwed up. Third goes to Lawler vs. Doink, which I can't believe
anybody over 5 wanted to see.
SCOTT KEITH: Waaaaaaay back when, there was info leaked from
WCW that one of the matches at a PPV would be the new team of Stars and
Stripes challenging the new WCW tag team champs, Pretty Wonderful.
About 90% of the net commented that this was typical WCW, shoving a
meaningless feud down our throats with no backgroud preparation or
reasonable dislike between the parties involved. Herb immediately
jumped in and defended WCW, saying that for all we knew they could come
up with a whiz-bang angle to beat all angles and make this the hottest
feud of the year, or words to that effect. Well, they didn't and Herb
was wrong. Nothing personal, but it had to be said. We have now had
about a million matches between the two teams, featuring some awful
matches and two title changes that were totally meaningless, and I still
don't get it. Why is WCW pushing this feud when a) the fans don't care,
b) the teams involved don't care and c) anyone other than a or b isn't
going to be brought into the "feud" with the total lack of storyline
present. After two PPV's, four matches on WCW TV and a couple of
Clashes, ENOUGH ALREADY! This whole stupid series of matches summarizes
WCW's attitude recently: Think of a stupid feud and shove it down our
throats whether we like it or not. And if you couldn't tell already, I
voted this masterpiece of mediocrity as among the worst Angle and Feud
of the year. Congrats, WCW, you've done it again.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: All three of my picks produced NO watchable matches,
so you can probably figure out what they were...or can you?

OTTO HEUER: The whole year was one big disappointment. A lot of the
disappointing news revolved around two men: Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan.
HERB KUNZE: Injuries and talent movement dominate this category for me.
Liger getting injured wins first place, although in the end the injury
was nowhere near what was first announced. Steamboat's injury gets
second. Third goes to the news that the Bodies would be going to the
WWF, where they've been lost ever since.
WOJO: (Steiners leave WWF, Bodies leave SMW, Marella dies) The WWF lost
their tag team promotion when they left. The SMW needed the heavenly
bodies. And a death of a regular referee is always sad news.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Duggan gets a belt, Hogan gets a parade, WCW gets
the Honky Tonk Man, I get sick.

OTTO HEUER: Isn't it amazing that The Huckster hasn't won this one yet?
HERB KUNZE: There sure are a lot! WCW, WWF and ECW could each fill my three
votes with ease. That said, I'll pick one offender from each promotion.
Joey Styles takes first. Gene Okerlund takes second. Ever since his
days in the AWA he's had this annoying habit of pulling the microphone
away from the wrestler he was interviewing to interrupt the finish of
the interview with some inane comment, thus stealing whatever heat the
wrestler had managed to muster. It pisses me off. Third goes to Vince
McMahon just for being Vince.
WOJO: Flair does Woooo and Duggan does Hooo. Lawlers obnoxious by saying
anything.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Eric Bischoff and Gene Okerlund are interchangable,
and make Vince McMahon look like the Pope.

DON DEL GRANDE: Not much to choose from...
HERB KUNZE: At SMW Fanweek, Ross did the commentary for the big Legends
show. A few days before that show aired, a bunch of the Fanweek crew
got to see the show in advance. Everybody in the room made a comment
about Ross' commentary being fantastic and that it was good to hear
him calling "realistic" pro-wrestling again. Commentators are a bad
crew these days and Ross was lost in the WWF, but still good. He gets
first. I want to vote fo Akira Fukuzawa from All Japan for second
since he calls moves clearly, although I understand nothing but the
move names and the wrestler names. Chris Cruise was very good at the
AAA show and better in that one performance than anybody else was all
year.

HERB KUNZE: There are very few that are good here, too, since joke-cracking
has replaced talking about the match. Jesse takes first, and Mantell
takes second. I'll give third to Larry Zbyszko, since there's no other
realistic competition.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Monsoon is even better as a colour commentator,
to those of us who like him. Bastion Booger was the best guest
commentator RAW ever had. Believe it or not, I didn't put Johnny Polo
in here. I couldn't stand the sound effects generator.

HERB KUNZE: From the Vader program, to Steamboat, to Hogan, Flair was the
best this year. Jim Cornette gets second. Those two are in a class
by themselves. Cactus is good, Paul E. is good, Shane is good. In the
end, I went with the newcomer New Jack for third. I stop to listen
to every one of his interviews. The line at the Legends show was
great: "You silenced Martin Luther King, you silenced Medgar Evers,
and now you've silenced Arsenio Hall!"
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Backlund is the only guy I bothered to transcribe
for r.s.p-w. Nuff said.

IRON FOOT: There seems to be a lot of creativity outside of the Big Two. Say
what you will about ECW but they do run angles quite well and the
wrestling (and definitely the brawling) are first-rate. It's a very
creative promotion - both in and out of the ring. I see the same thing
over in All Japan with the big push for Williams and then for Kawada;
I'm happy to see Misawa on the periphery for now.
Even the WWF has done some nice things. The Diesel, Michaels, Ramon,
123Kid grouping has done some nice things, and the Hart v. Hart feud has
produced some nice things. And for what it's worth, I've always like Bob
Backlund and for whatever reason, I do like the heel turn. I can't
forgive them for the Royal Rumble though.
HERB KUNZE: The SMW storyline where R'n'R faced the Bodies with the loser
having to leave was fantastic and gave us the best 10 minutes of TV
this year. The Bodies leaving wins here. Bob Armstrong resigning
as commissioner after getting pummelled by Cornette & co. was also
great. Mikey Whipreck's TV title reign was also great and takes
third.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: My top two demoralize Dink. I hope that doesn't
make me a heightist.

OTTO HEUER: Amazing how WCW didn't even get NOMINATED this year! Also
amazing how no promotion has won this award twice (if we count NWA and
WCW as two different promotions).
HERB KUNZE: I never have to enter into the WCW vs. WWF battle since they
are both far removed from my top three. First goes to All Japan Women,
second to All Japan, and third to SMW. AAA probably deserves to be in
there, but I didn't see enough of it.

HERB KUNZE: We finally get RAW on TV up here and I have to say it was
disappointing so far. I don't get what the fuss is about. ECW TV
is amateurishly produced and filled with repeated material all chopped
up. After watching 10 weeks of the TV show, you could learn all the
words to "Ruffneck." No, first goes to All Japan, which on a weekly
basis recognizes what quality matches are. New Japan is too inconsistent
to rate. AJW TV is great when it airs and takes second. SMW TV is
my favourite North American hour and takes third.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Monday Night Raw, while deteriorated, is still
the best hour on television. The Action Zone has given us some
quality matches, but we'll see how well it does after a year.

OTTO HEUER: I voted for the WCW all-Nighter. I wish they had run more
of these (it cost Turner next to nothing to churn out and brought in
VERY good ratings). My guess as to why they don't: it shows how
shitty wrestling is in the 1990s.
HERB KUNZE: The best major shows were the 12/10/93 AJW tag tourney final
and the New Japan Super J tourney. No match on either show was under
*** and most were over ****. A lot of people will vote for WrestleMania
because it had two match of the year candidates, forgetting or ignoring
that it had 2 other hours of crap. I was going to vote for Spring
Stampede third, but in all honesty the AJW show from 08/24/94 was far
better. I don't know if it's fair to call this a major show, but
I'm picking it third.
BRUCE McGEORGE: If it wouldn't have been for the AAA PPV at the last
minute, I would have only voted for 2 major shows (Spring Stampede,
ECW Hostile City Showdown). That's pretty sad.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: WrestleMania X probably won't be matched for
quite a while.

HERB KUNZE: New Japan creating possible contenders for the IWGP Jr.
Title by showcasing other lighter talent was a very smart move.
It increased interest in the lighter guys to the point that the
fans become almost disinterested in the heavyweights! Hopefully,
New Japan will realize that there is an untapped interest there
again and re-push the Jr. feuds with Liger, Benoit, and Sasuke
amongst others headlining. All Japan giving Steve Williams the
title was smart since it created some interesting pairings.
The WWF finally pushing Owen hard was great and takes third.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: The Jacques Rougeau retirement was brilliant.
Too bad they restricted it to a local market, but it was the right
thing to do.
Worst Manager

HERB KUNZE: Mr. Fuji is the worst since he serves no purpose. Every other
manager at least talks on a microphone. Of those talkers, the worst are

HERB KUNZE: Joey Styles takes my first place vote because he annoys me.
I know he pushes the product correctly for his audience, but I don't
things he very good outside of that. Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff
imitating Vince McMahon grate and take second and third. It's hard
to believe that somebody as bad as Gorilla Monsoon can avoid getting
my vote.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: Anyone who gave Vince McMahon first place hasn't
heard Eric Bischoff's faux McMahon.
Worst Colour Commentator

Award Description:
To be given to the commentator/announcer who makes the dumbest comment
while pushing his product. This person probably gets you to turn down
the TV when he/she is announcing. As of 1992, the difference
between this and colour commentator will be enforced.

OTTO HEUER: It was a hard choice between Randy Savage and Bobby Heenen on
this one. Randy has that constipated voice, but occasionaly makes
reference to the match. Bobby tells old tired jokes with a non-grating
voice, but if you were in the next room listening you wouldn't even know
there was a match going on.
HERB KUNZE: Can we just say "everyone?" No, unfortunately. Heenan hasn't
been so bad this year and occasionally remembers to mention the match
these days. Dusty Rhodes is terrible. Bruce Prichard doing Dusty Rhodes
as Reo Rodgers was worse. Smilin' Stan Lane was really annoying.
Savage? Terrible. The choice is hard and interchangeable. Let's
go with Rodgers, Savage, and Rhodes.
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: I wait a whole year to vote for Reo Rodgers, and
then I remember I need to put Art Donovan in first place. Did you
remember? I'll bet you wish you had.

TREVOR BARRIE: One of the saddest things I saw this year was the Heartbreak
Hotel segment with Lex Luger and Tatanka. When the interviewer is more
charismatic than both interviewees combined, it's not a good sign. IRS
also deserves mention; his schpiel is entertaining for a little while,
but there are only so many ways you can work tax references into a wrestling

OTTO HEUER: Ultimate Warrior and El Gigante have been passing this one
back and forth. Since neither one has done much wrestling this year,
who will be the lucky winner?
HERB KUNZE: Lex Luger takes first because he sounds completely insincere.
Jim Duggan annoys me. That's not a very good reason, but I'm giving
him second anyhow. Third goes to Diesel who will improve under the
spotlight but is still terrible now. "Cross-faced Wing Chicken,"
indeed. (Yeah, yeah, I know that reference was outside of our
year-end).
CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN: It bestows me to put Tatanka just ahead of the
1-2-3 Kid.
