Before it became 100% gangsta BS and marketing, and only record
company owners' crews getting a push. Before it all sounded the same.

In the 80s they said rappers getting their own labels would save
diversity in rap but instead it all but destroyed it.

I really miss 80s Rap. Everyone had a different sound, a different
groove. Special times.

i remember rap a bit different.
i remember when 'rapper's delight' came out in '79 and was actually on
pop radio.
i was a kid in my early teens and didnt really know jack squat yet about
music.
i didnt like it or hate it.
i thought it was a novelty song!
i also thought madonna would never be a big star.
as i grew into young adulthood in the early 80's, i saw rap was still
around, but no one in my scene got anywhere near it. they were all
pretty entrenched arena/corporate rock/metalheads and were quite racist
about black artists. they gave me and my friends ten kinds of hell for
listening to new wave and called it 'faggot music'. but behind close
doors and at home and on the road, it was whatever the hell we wanted.
dont get wrong i LOVE most african american styles and recognize the
great influence it has had on music around the world, but that all stops
at rap.
like i said, i went through the eighties not really ever being around
it, but when i did it annoyed me, but i still thought of it as a legit
'style'. different strokes for different folks and all that stuff like
that there.
then the more i saw of HOW they got their 'beats' and all that my
opinion turned negative. my defining moment when i came to 'hate' it was
when i was sitting in with my brother in a radio show he was doing at a
college radio station and he was playing de-la-soul and i HEARD THE
ACTUAL [Sampled] part of Eric Burdon and Wars 'magic mountain' being
used as rhythm track! i about lost my shit because the first time i had
heard magic mountain was ON A 45 MY BROTHER HAD BOUGHT AS A KID!! this
was not just covering a song my another artist in your own style, but
this outright THEFT and PLAGIARISM! Then i found out that is how rap
works. so my chagrin was great and my split and loathing for the whole
scene has never waned since.
i acknowledge now that it was FAR MORE than a novelty song and i guess i
pigeonhole myself into the guise of a narrowminded old fart, but that is
how it goes.
i WILL say, though with rappers and djs seeking after beats it has
brought a WEALTH of cool instrumental music back to light.
