Bill Donohue is taking credit for forcing Delta to pull its
advertising from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart over a skit in which
Stewart proposed that Fox News could be persuaded to pay as much
attention to the “war on women” as it does to the “war on Christmas”
by placing mangers in front of a women’s vagina. Crude? Yes. Hate
speech? Hardly?
I think it’s important for the people at Delta to know just who they
have sided with is.
Bill Donohue is a former professor who has been head of the Catholic
League since 1993. The Catholic League does little more than issue
inflammatory press releases and pay its leader nearly $400,000 in
total compensation a year.
One of Donohue’s most famous television appearances came on the
December 8, 2004 episode of “Scarborough Country” in a discussion
about the film The Passion of The Christ. Asked by Pat Buchanan about
some of the film’s backlash and how Hollywood would respond, he said
the follow:
Who really cares what Hollywood thinks? All these hacks come out
there. Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity
in general and Catholicism in particular. It‘s not a secret, OK? And
I‘m not afraid to say it.
On another occasion, Mr. Donohue had some choice words following the
Pope’s decision the to lift the excommunication of Richard Williamson,
who had previously said, “I believe there were no gas chambers. I
think that two to three hundred thousand Jews perished in Nazi
concentration camps but none of them by gas chambers.” This decision
was questioned by Israel’s envoy to the Vatican. Mr. Donohye
responded:
“None of the media distortions of this issue excuses those in the
Jewish community who have lashed out at the pope. They should know
better. Is their commitment to good relations with Catholics so thin
that it can wither because of something like this? We certainly hope
not.”
In the past, Donohue has been rebuked by Catholic priests for “hateful
speech“.
Here’s a sampling of tweets from from Mr. Donohue:

The Times has a book review about the military written by an "expert"
who never spent a day in uniform. But she is a lesbian: Rachel Maddow.

North Carolina rejects gay marriage. Which means that when the people
vote, we're 32 out of 32. Some Glee in that, don't you think?

Too bad Kate Upton didn't wear a burqa-bikini in the "The Three

joke.

Not widely know forhis empathy, Mr. Donohue has also demonized SNAP
(The Surviors Network of those Abused by Priests), calling them “a
professional victims’ group” on one occasion and “a phony victims’
group” on another. In addition, he referred to a group gathering to
mark the 10th anniversary of media reports on sex abuse by clergy in
Boston as, “a pitiful bunch of malcontents.”
Perhaps there is no better example of Mr. Donohue’s great empathy
than the time he lamented the Catholic Church paying out a settlement
to a victims’ group, saying, “The church has been too quick to write a
check, and I think they’ve realized it would be a lot less expensive
in the long run if we fought them one by one.” Not a surprise, for a
man who is not above blaming the victim. On more than one occasion.
