True, but it will probably do good business and looks pretty decent. Also,
it is good to actually see the good guy characters (humans) get a push,
instead of just vampires either being given a superpush. Blade was good,
though.

I HOPE this is true. The vibe I got for both of these trailers was
the same:

Lost Potential

Jackman is much too young to be playing a character I've always
imagined to be an older guy. Plus, the addition of Frankenstein's
monster (labelled as usual, as just Frankenstein for some damned
reason) and the Wolfman is overkill.

A sexy Trinity-like redheaded woman will make nice eyecandy for the
fight scenes and the will-they-or-won't-they scenes, but it's hard to
tell if she'll actually make the movie better.

If they wanted to make a movie about going after vampires, werewolves
and undead creatures, they should've licensed the T.R.A.X. concept
from the company that owns Dungeons and Dragons. They put out two
audio CDs and a video game with the concept of a special ops-style
branch of the 911 emergency system. The field agents had guns with
silver bullets filled with holy water, called Silver Specials. They
made the two audio adventures available for download from their
website a while back.

Meanwhile, Troy's big scene with the digital armies running at each
other looked exactly like that; a pair of digital armies. The initial
clashes on the front lines looked poorly animated, and this is
supposed to be a teaser with completed footage designed to get you
drooling for the theatrical release, right?

Plus, Brad looks too pretty. If there was a Friends episode where
Rachel somehow ended up on a movie set and bumped into Brad Pitt,
that's how Brad would look. A little over-the-top cute with a simple
gladiator outfit.

Still, I'm sure I'll pay to see both of these in the theatre. I just
fear I'll be greatly disappointed, like I was by League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Whatever... Not fitting your ideal imagined image is hardly lost potential.

Hard to say if that will be true or not. People (many on RSPW) said a lot
like this about Hulk trailers and were way off from the way it looked in the
movie. Wait and see.

If this is what they've achieved, then they are right on the mark for the
way the ancient Greeks portrayed their heroes. All you've got to do is read
the flowery complements passed around in the books and notice the overdone
beauty in their statues to see what I mean. Each movie should have its own
style anyway.

No, Hulk was poorly animated.

Perhaps not, but it IS a reason for me to not go. I was a fan of the
novel before the 90's resurgence of hip vampire stuff. I worked on a
stage version of the play as well. When "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was
released, I walked out of the theatre wishing they'd just called it
"Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula" which would've been more accurate.
In other words, I'm still waiting for a modern movie to tell the story
as it appears in the novel. I'm NOT interested in Young Van Helsing
any more than I'm interested in Young Hercules or Muppet Babies.

The potential I'm referring to is the potential to make a quality
gothic horror movie based on the original Stoker novel, not a hip
re-imagining of a few of it's story elements.

The addition of additional, completely non-related creatures
(Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolfman) was once relegated to the bad
sequels of the 40's thru the 60's. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman has
a special place in my heart, because I saw it as a really young kid,
but that doesn't mean it's what I'd like to see now.

My thinking is, they couldn't come up with a good story for Van
Helsing involving Jackman's character and a vampire. So, rather than
spend more time on a better script, they just added more monsters. I
won't even get into the winged harpies shown in the previews, either.
Well, except to say that if Van Helsing wins out at the end of the
movie, the only movie monster he'll have left to fight in the cheesy
sequel will be Godzilla.

Fair enough. Although, I thought Hulk's animation was just as bad in
the movie as it was in the trailer. Worse in scenes that didn't even
make the trailer, like the fight against the hulked-up dogs.

Again, that's a fair statement. However, when it comes to getting me
to go to the theatre to see a movie about Troy, I'd prefer more gritty
realism. I fear Brad Pitt's army is going to be made up of male
models, all beautifully coifed. This is funny in a sitcom. It's
jarringly out of place in an epic film, like this is being touted to
be.

But hey, I'm willing to take the chance. Why? Because it doesn't
look like there's much else to see, and just staying home gets boring
after a while. However, in the cases of these two films, I'll
probably attending matinees on the weekend, not opening night. I'm
just not stirred up to see these movies from the trailers. And
Superbowl trailers are so expensive and widely seen that they
absolutely MUST stir me up in order to be judged successful.
