I know this next bit is sure to get me flamed, but am I the only one who
thinks Ted Turner has some kinda bias against us good folks up here in
the Great White North? It started in 1992 when the United States Marine
Corp flew our flag UPSIDE DOWN during the World Series pitting our Jays
against the Turner-owned Atlanta Braves (and don't even start on me re:
the umpteen bad calls made by the umpires). Now, I'm finally starting to
get interested in WCW again (after their contant pandering to Hulk "How
Many Months Between Title Defences?" Hogan turned me off!) and what do I
see but the Fabulous French Canadians mangling our anthem to the boos of
the crowd and that annoying chant of "USA, USA" (pardon me, but since
when is Canada at odds with our American cousins?)
Maybe ol' "Billionaire Ted" is pissed at the True North Strong and Free
and that's why there hasn't been a WCW card in Canada since Jesus was a
cowboy.

The Mountie's first theme song was also O Canada, BTW. He never used
to sing it though. ;)

As for 'USA' chants for Canadians... most Canadians of note have been
heels for most of their careers. The Rougeaus, Dino Bravo, Rick "The
Model" Martel, Chris Benoit... and all except Martel were openly
Canadian if you will (some to the point of being anti-American in the
ring...) The Mountie was especially good at drawing heat over this
aspect, as his hilarious segments before entering the WWF proved (the
one where the horse's ass pointed towards the USA at the border was my
fave)

I dunno why Canadian=Heel, in the Big Two... it just seems to.

>Maybe ol' "Billionaire Ted" is pissed at the True North Strong and Free

WCW has just never been able to get a strong foothold in Canada...
mostly due to the 'regional' days when they were chiefly in the South.
The AWA had a stronghold in Montreal due to local wrestlers such as
the Vachons and Rick Martel... after they folded, the WWF (with Bravo,
the Rougeaus, Martel, the Harts) took over. WWF TV has been a mainstay
in most Canadian markets since the beginning.

Meanwhile in the 1980s, the only Canadian of note in the NWA was
Ronnie Garvin. They rarely did house shows in Canada, except the rare
Toronto appearance... and 'out of sight out of mind' became the rule
of the day.

In the 1990's, the WWF continues to book house shows in small Canadian
arenas, while WCW barely books house shows at all. WCW has a few
high-profile Canadians, as does the WWF.

Two problems keep WCW from being strong in Canada... TV and the
Rougeau factor. WCW TV is fairly new to Canada, and Nitro newer still.
Canadians for the most part see Nitro on Saturdays, and a one-hour
version at that. Some markets get Worldwide, while other WCW shows are
harder to find unless you have a satellite or damn good cable.
Meanwhile, TSN (Canada's sports net) carries RAW, Superstars, and used
to carry Action Zone. A big TV gap.

The Rougeau factor is more prevalent in Quebec, for the most part.
Jacques Rougeau booked two house shows in Montreal last year under the
WCW-Quebec banner, mixiing local and WCW mid-carders. The cards STUNK
and basically set WCW's cause in Quebec back a few miles. While the
WWF is a lock twice a year to sell 10,000+ seats in a hockey arena,
local WCW promoter Tony Mule (Rougeau's WCW-Quebec partner) runs ads
alongside WCW PPV ads with a phone number to call "if you are
interested in booking a WCW event."... essentially, begging for
someone interested in a WCW show.

Jacques Rougeau's slightly deluded dreams of a huge (read; baseball
stadium) supercard in Montreal are what drove him from the WWF (BIG
tiff with Vince), and his assurances that WCW will hold a card (or
even a PPV!) in Montreal sound all too familiar to Montreal fans.

So if you wanna see a Canadian hero wrestler... try Bret. If you wanna
see WCW make it big in Canada... keep hoping. ;)

I think Turner and Bischoff are just pissed off because they haven't been
able to woo Bret Hart into jumping ship 8). Knowing that they
couldn't buy _the_ most talented technician in North America (having
beaten both the Horsemen and a fair number of the NWO) because of Hart's
"Canadian" psychology (choosing job security over the bottom line, among
other things) must have made their necks even redder. Besides, I saw a WCW
card a few years ago in Halifax -- half the wrestlers scheduled to appear
didn't show up so we had to endure a Flair vs. Hawk match instead of
Flair vs. Luger. Not a good first impression.

Yeah, what about Vince? Before the Hart Foundation's face turn there
were no Canadian faces in the WWF, right? Dino, the Rougeau Bros.,
"Canadian Earthquake" John Tenta used to wear the ol' Maple Leaf on
his chest... Vinnie stirred up lots of anti-Canadian sentiment in the
80's.

Hey WCW doesn't come up to the northern US all that much either. They're
still primarily southeastern. The Harts and the Rougeaus assured a
strong WWF presence in Canada for many many years, on the other hand, like
Pat said.

Kelly, do not comment on what you don't understand.
Turner inherited his father's billboard company that
was borderline bankrupt and he turned into his multi-
billionaire corporation. So I believe it is proper to
say that he is a self-made man. Now, if you just hate
him because he is rich, then you are simply a class-envy
liberal who doesn't think that it is "fair"
that someone makes more money than you.

And if that's the truth, you need to get over it.

Naw, I doubt Turner could point Canada on a map. No surprise that some
meathead US marine didn't have a clue on how properly set up a flag.

I've been watching the
WCW on mostly American stations and basically have given up on the WWF.
But the WWF remains king over here and that won't change for a while even
though the WWF doesn't trek through Ontario and the Western provinces
like they used to. WCW/NWA has been always a southern US based
organization and in the last couple of years they've mounting a
respectable move all over the US, sooner or later they'll take a wrong
turn and will host a Bash at the Beach in Vancouver, Wargames in
Montreal, Hogwild in Hamilton, Fall Brawl in Calgary or Halloween Havoc in
Halifax.

Regarding the anthem part, yeah, it actually does work me up a bit. The
US must be the only country where people boo or jeer when another
country's anthem is being played. And to think that we're the US'
biggest ally, their biggest trading partner, the one who shares with them
the largest unprotected border in the world and not mention the only ones
who burned down their capital Washington ...

What's funny about this last post is not pointing out the fact that Turner
is a self-made billionaire (he is), but the "liberal" tag being pinned on
the previous poster. Ted Turner has got to be one of this country's most
bleeding heart liberals. Check out the slant to CNN. You won't catch
Turner at the 2000 GOP Convention, and most importantly, who's idea do you
think it was to rename the term "foreign object" to "international object"
and why?

Think about that.

Oh yeah, and where do think the Turners will be at the inauguration in
January if Clinton gets re-elected? Probably sitting right next to Barbra
Streisand.

Yeah, I know that he's a liberal. Mostly for social issues though.
You can call him a little flighty for the next comment I'll write
though. He's been quoted as saying he actuall prefers a republican
in the white house because they will lower taxes. go figure.
Now, as soon as he realizes that we republicans are good natured, loving
caring, sensitive... ok ok i'm cracking myself up here. I admit
it. we hate everybody. :)

Okay, so this has nothing to do with wrestling and is a colossal
bandwidth-waster, but so is the rest of this thread, and you just HAVE to see
it. It's from The Onion, a great Wisconsin-based parody newspaper. Check it
out on the Web at www.theonion.com.

PERKY 'CANADA' HAS OWN GOVERNMENT, LAWS

It's Monday morning, and Toronto resident Steve Dorman shares a quick
breakfast of "eggs" (a native food) with his "wife" (an officially
state-sanctioned mate), and discusses yesterday's poor showing by the hometown
team in "baseball" (a popular local sport). After a kiss on his wife's cheek,
he hops on the "subway train" (a mode of subterranean transport) to the
office.

This is life in exotic Canada City, the capital set deep in the heart
of the mysterious land known as Canada (pronounced CAN-a-da).

Like his estimated 35,000 fellow countrymen, Dorman is proud to be a
"Canadian." Located 120 miles north of Buffalo, NY, Canada is, according to
Dorman, "a nation with a government and laws distinct from those of the United
States." It also has a military, a system of taxation, and periodic free
elections to select political leaders. It even has its own currency, says
Dorman, various denominations of "dollars" that can be exchanged for the
many products manufactured in Canada, including Canadian bacon and ice.

Canada City, Canada's largest community, is located in a place called a
"province," a subdivision not unlike the cantons of Switzerland. There are 10
Canadian provinces in all, from Nova Scotia in the east to British Columbia in
the west. And, much like America's states, nearly every one of the provinces
has its own capital. But make no mistake--there's nothing provincial
about these provinces. Canada has both feet planted firmly in the 20th
century.

"In fact, Canadians enjoy advancements such as refrigerated food,
zippers and printing," notes Dorman, an "accountant" who goes to work wearing
the comfortable trousers, dress shirt and necktie that form a traditional
Canadian costume. "Our industries are large and varied, ranging from logging
to automobile manufacturing."

Not too shabby for a nation that just 240 years ago had no electricity.

One area in which Canada certainly has the U.S. beat is languages.
Canadians speak not only English, but also French. In fact, according to Prime
Minister (roughly Canada's equivalent of a president) Jean Chrétien, "French
is the primary language in some parts of the country, and English is in
others. The national language question has divided our nation terribly, with
Quebec even recently threatening to leave the union."

Canada has produced many prominent people who have gone on to great
success in hockey. Among them is Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy,
who says hockey is the "national sport" of the Canadianers.

"It's in our blood, it's part of our heritage, and it brings people
together," he says of the sport Canada picked up from America in the late
'50s. So appreciative is Canada, it even has hockey teams called the "Oilers"
and "Jets," named after its favorite American football teams.

Despite the language problem and other difficulties, at least one
Canadianer is optimistic about his country's prospects in the new millennium.

"Canada will remain free, proud and strong in the new century," says
Dorman, heading off for another day of what in Canada is known as "work." "Our
nation will continue to be a beacon to those throughout the world who value
liberty, dignity and human rights."

Aww, isn't that cute? At times like this, there's really only one thing
left to say: Oh, Canada!
