i have a question to ask here, in the pro-wrestling base. I do not ask it
to be demeaning or anything, but I have an honest confusion on something
here....
First off, I am a jiujitsu/judo/sambo student, and I practice submission
grappling. I know what "real" grappling/wrestling is.
I know that a shoot is a "real" match. I know that a "work", is a
predetermined <fake> match. I also understand the concept of jobbers and
stuff.
Here is my confusion: How do you carry any sorta interest in events like
these, when you yourself know this. I can see an ignorant love for the
acting they play out on TV, and I can understand some people HONESTLY
believing that the better wrestler won so-n-so match.
But, to those who accept and realize that this is all a huge staged
comedy: How are you able to hold intest in it?
I enjoy watching these events for the "show" aspect, but these hold ZERO
grappling interest to me at all. Oh, sure.. sometimes those "mexican"
wrestlers who risk breaking their neck on rope jumps, are sometimes cool..
but the Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior.. that crap is utterly
annonying to the point it turns me off the 'sport'.
I see crap like Pallbearer suspender over a ring, the "mandible claw", the
NWO, Sunny, "new diesel", black "beard" painted on Hogan, fireworks, faked
police/gaurd intervention, all that crap wrapped up in one... it literally
PUSHES me away from a sport soo hard.
I often think:
"What if they ACTED like it was real?"
"What if the people ATTEMPTED to show wrestling skill?"
Etc.
What is with these people who say stuff like; "Have the NWO arrested,
boycot anything with the NWO!"
Do these people HONESTLY think the NWO is anything MORE then a scheme
launched by the parent company? Do you honestly think a company would
allow an internal or extrenal strife to create and physically attempt to
revolt againt the main company?
If this REALLY happened, each one of those people would be fired
INSTANTLY, and probably arrested.
Hell.. that COULDNT happen.
I think of the fake aspect of work/shoot, and cant understand the
insentice NOT to shoot in a PPV event, especially if you carry a huge fan
base. I dont understand how the pay works. I got all these bewilderments,
and when i wrap em all up together, i cant help but to think
"What keeps from driving you AWAY from these events?"
Why dont they toss around the idea of a couple REAL wrestling matches?
Sure, use the same stuff as always, but explore a "real" angle?
Could it be that if they did this once, the crowd would never again be
happy with the song and dance they are showing now?
Last I watched, Hogan couldnt do anything except a clothesline, fake punch
to chest, and leg drop for pin. I saw ZERO abilities from him.
Same with most of those people.
I watch non-worked japanese events <mostly non-worked>, and i am disgusted
with the insult to intelligence that wrestling shows in the US push upon
us.
Anyone who can help me figure this stuff out, please.. reply to me.
As it is now, i read an interview with some of these guys, and Im AMAZED
that they can attempt to talk about this shit as if it were based upon
some semi-reminant of a truth.
Ya know, stuff like "Hogan never beat Piper". As far as Im concerned, no
wrestler EVER beat any other wrestler. Someoen might have laid down for
someone else.. but damn man...

Look, people are going to find this demeaning. I'm honestly kind of tired
of the question, and the answer is hard to explain. I wonder why people

At least you attempted to educate yourself on this. Most of us know this

We wait for it to quit being a huge staged comedy, unless of course, it is
actually funny.

They can give their own "show" aspect that can entertain as well. And
almost all of us hate Hogan and Warrior, and most of us hate Savage as well,
but at least he's watchable.
>I see crap like Pallbearer suspender over a ring, the "mandible claw", the

A bunch of us hate these things as well. All of these things are not the
"sports" aspect, but the "entertainment" aspect of the WWF-coined term
"Sports Entertainment".
And Sunny is hot. :)
>I often think:
>"What if they ACTED like it was real?"
>"What if the people ATTEMPTED to show wrestling skill?"
If they mixed it in with the high-flying style, and kept some of the
entertainment aspects, I'd like it better.
>What is with these people who say stuff like; "Have the NWO arrested,
>boycot anything with the NWO!"
For the arrests, who knows? People aren't always real intelligent.
I think the futile boycott attempts are being made because people don't want
the competing show to be moved to another time slot. Competition gives us
better TV performances.
>Do these people HONESTLY think the NWO is anything MORE then a scheme
>launched by the parent company? Do you honestly think a company would
>allow an internal or extrenal strife to create and physically attempt to
>revolt againt the main company?
No, I don't think too many of us think the NWO is actually a different
company. But when I watch, I am more entertained when I suspend disbelief
for a while.
>If this REALLY happened, each one of those people would be fired
>INSTANTLY, and probably arrested.
>Hell.. that COULDNT happen.
My guess, as far as the storylines go, is that WCW isn't going to wimp out
and have them arrested. They're going to kick their collective ass and
throw them out. Kicking ass for even the most minor of causes is the basis
of American wrestling in the '90's.
>I think of the fake aspect of work/shoot, and cant understand the

>"What keeps from driving you AWAY from these events?"
The Lucha-style matches. I also like good-paced technical style matches
(like what Dean Malenko usually works). There are some interesting
interviews and storylines as well.
>Why dont they toss around the idea of a couple REAL wrestling matches?
>Sure, use the same stuff as always, but explore a "real" angle?
>Could it be that if they did this once, the crowd would never again be
>happy with the song and dance they are showing now?
Many claim that many "shoot" matches that Dan Severn (who's legitimately as
tough as anybody) works as a pro wrestler are boring. He has no angle, and
his inspiration for wrestling is unknown. I would agree that there is a
place for serious wrestlers in wrestling. Unfortunately, most of the
typical American wrestling audience (who does not participate in this group)
thinks otherwise.
>Last I watched, Hogan couldnt do anything except a clothesline, fake punch
>to chest, and leg drop for pin. I saw ZERO abilities from him.
>Same with most of those people.
No, most everyone has far more talent and ability than Hogan. I should note
that Hogan does show more in Japan, because the fans there don't put up with
his crap. Ultimate Warrior is at that level as well.
>I watch non-worked japanese events <mostly non-worked>, and i am disgusted
>with the insult to intelligence that wrestling shows in the US push upon

As are many of us, problem is we are a vast minority among US wrestling
fans.

Again, suspension of disbelief. A way to loosen up. Not everyone can do
that for wrestling. We're all different people and have no place to judge
the morals or intelligence of anyone else.

Just ask my sister how much a DDT can hurt. I myself can say a powerbomb
is not a very pleasent experience. These moves HURT!!! They also are
can be executed against the will of your opponent. I won't say it is a
dominant fighting style (cause it isn't), but if you take on somebody who
knows what they're doing (Taz) you are in a shitload of trouble.
So your supposed to sit back, "get stupid", and just watch it?
Yes, most people do this, but I was asking the DIEHARD FANS, no average
joe.
Average joe doesnt read this message groud, so i wasnt addressing them, I
was asking the people who post messages like:
"Boycott WCW till they control the NWO".
Im asking to try and figure out what they see in this sport, that I dont
see.
Robb
AHAHAHAH.. What does that have to do with my message, in any shape of way?
It has NOTHING.
I mentioned that I study jiujitsu/judo/sambo, which are all variation of
ground based submission grappling. In other words, we "wrestle" till we
get our opponent in an arm or leg lock, then they TAP OUT cause we have a
REAL submission hold on them.
I do not see how that applies to Seagal or Van Dam, they do nothing of the
sort.

Well, you have a point, an extreme point, but a point. Most of
those DIEHARD fans to which you refer don't like Hogan, Warrior or
Savage. Those DIEHARD fans appreciate the athleticism in the
business.

That stuff, while not part of the "sport" is necessary in the
business to keep the interest of those not so *smart*.
>I often think:
>"What if they ACTED like it was real?"

Many of the wrestlers do. The time of the carnival
side show is passed. Many wrestlers (except those
caught in the mid '80's) are moving away from it.
The problem is, is that the circus environment put
butts in the seats. So you can't argue against it.
>What is with these people who say stuff like; "Have the NWO arrested,
>boycot anything with the NWO!"
Those people don't know the line between realism and
sensationalism. They are the majority of wrestling fans,
however, so their opinions will matter most to the
promoters.
>Do these people HONESTLY think the NWO is anything MORE then a scheme

Most do, most just like the idea. Some don't.

It's a WORK. And it is the hottest thing in the business (that's
visible worldwide) today. Those DIEHARDs have voiced their
opinions for it.

Nothing. The accelerating violence is driving me away.

Pillman/Sullivan, Michaels collapsing in the ring,
Woman/Sullivan/Beniot. All based on real angles.
Have had the *smarts* wondering if the promoters
were shooting.
The problem? many were peeved because they were
fooled so badly.

No argument from anyone on this newsgroup.

Don't wish to burst your bubble. Although there is more of a
sense of realism, and the Japanses fans take the sport more
seriously, Japanese wrestling is no less of a work as US.
The product is better quality (for the *smart*), but US
culture has accepted the circus environment.

Well, IF that is what he was referring to[the original poster] then
its obvious why those ppl watch wrestling...
they DO NOT think its a work.
& yeah, i saw the other ones, too. of COURSE some of the moves are
painful! You dont get to fall 6 feet & land on parts of your anatomy &
not have there be some pain involved.
Its like football, in a way. The art of tackling DOES cause some pain,
right? how can two 200+ pound guy slam into each other not feel some
pain? The thing is, in wrestling, the guys do what they can to
MINIMIZE the risk to their opponent....when the guy is outside on the
ground, & his opponent does a cross body block to him from the top
rope, there would be some SERIOUS damage to the man in the air if the
guy on the ground doesnt play it just right. For that matter, there
could be some serious damage to the guy on the ground, too...
Most ppl reading this NG realize that its all scripted.
Why do we watch? Because its fun to watch these humongous dudes doing
these risky moves...its fun to watch a guy behave like an animal. Its
AS interesting to follow the storylines that develope in Professional
Wrestling as it is to follow the storylines on "Seinfeld".
I'll also tell you this:
Things like "The Ultimate Fighting Championship" are JUST as much fun
to watch, but I'd watch those for a different reason, there would be a
totally different dynamic to those shows, because you KNOW, you can
SEE, you can FEEL some of the shots those guys take at each other. No
"Foot Stomping" in those matches.
HOWEVER....
you arent going to be able to follow/& or watch guys who do that for
20 yrs or so. Their bodies won't last taking that kind of abuse.
BUT, I'll still be able to watch my favorite wrestlers, if they still
want to wrestlte, that is.
Yeah, its all fake.
But, DAMN, its fun to watch!!

Don't get too deep into this. I also practice submission grappling as
part of my JKD training/kali/silat...etc. I've used Pittmans 'Code
red', basically an indonesian arm bar /hip slide.
Professional wrestling is several things:
1. a profession
2. a business
3. my favorite soap opera
4. 'sports entertainment'.
It isn't something I watch to learn how to fight. That may be why you
don't see Glacier. The two times I saw him, I saw him execute quite
the perfect tumbling roll, same one I learned in Aikido.
Some people I worked with in the past met "The Samoan Swat team".
They asked them about what they call themselves, and they responded
"We are entertainers".
They regularly frequent pay per view, ask 30 bucks and get it. If
they didn't, they wouldn't be doing it. I don't know what it cost
them to put on a pay per view though...
People like that stuff. Personally, I wonder why people like watching
golf...but heck, they must, Cox cable has an entire channel for just
golf.
You must be joking. Anyone that tries these moves on real people without
taking into account that wrestling is staged and the moves are faked is
stupid. Sure a DDT hurts. But do you really think that wrestlers
actually perform this move to hurt someone. You can break someone's neck
if the move is done right. Watch in slow motion how these moves are done.
For example, I was curious about the Vader moonsault. So I watched in
slow motion to see how someone that fat could land on someone else without
leaving only a grease spot. If you watch Vader in slow motion you would
see that he actually lands on his hands first before landing on the
opponent. His hands breaks his fall and momentum. Come on if someone
that heavy landing on anyone else from that height believe me the person
on the bottom would be squashed like a grape. Ditto for other moves like
the powerbomb. Watch in slow motion and see what they actually do.
Nobody said they moves don't hurt but I thought everyone knew that they
are executed in a fashion that is safe. Don't try that stuff at home.
You coud kill someone even yourself.

Vader accidentally broke some jobbers back on national television with
a Power Bomb. Quite impressive to see someones hips and head make
hard contact with themselves. This was back in the Bill Watts time
frame.
This bring up another question. How do we know for sure when someone's
injured and when it's part of the show? To say that Vader broke someone's
back give creedence to the "heel" imagine that the promoters are trying to
get across. Sure there are real injuries but is this one of them. If so
how do we know for sure? Does anyone out there really think that Stan
Hansen broke Bruno Samartino's neck during a match? I don't. Get the
point. That little anouncement was for promotion purposes. So how do we
know for sure Vader broke someone's back?
Just curious.

1) Pro Wrestling is NOT a "sport," or at least this writer has not
considered it such since he was in 5th or 6th grade (many, many moons
ago)---it is *entertainment*...essentially, soap operas in which the
actors happen to be extremely atheletic.
Remember---NOBODY bets on wrestling matches...
2) With that in mind, I'd just like to say that *I* watch to be
entertained. I enjoy the angles, the interviews, and I have a great
respect for the atheleticism of (most) of the actors/actresses
involved. And yes, just like the folks that shout instructions at
their favorite movie hero, I truly enjoy "marking out" (p-w slang for
"getting excited over a match/interview/whatever) on a good match,
interview, etc., just as the average moviegoer will cry at a touching
scene.
3) I may be wrong, or nuts, or just desperately clinging to my belief in
Santa Claus, but occasionally, a fight or feud comes along in which
there appears to be a very real conflict between the participants
(Lawler/Kauffman, or more recently, maybe Benoit (my
man!)/Sullivan)---these types of fights, few and far between as they
are, tend to lead to the best matches, even when the participants
involved are not necessarily considered as "great" wrestlers.
Flair/Savage, a feud which has, in reality, been going on for about 15
years, may be another good example, as I understand that Flair has been
a third partner in Randy and Liz Poffo's relationship in real life in
the (distant) past.
4) The most important skill in being a wrestling fan, mark, smart, or
"smark" (that third category would probably include this writer) is the
ability to suspend one's disbelief. I seriously doubt that you will
find anyone in this conference that actually believes that every match
they see is a real fight.
Hope this helps.

I know the matches are booked, but i dunno how..
I mean if you say wrestling is manipulated, go see
boxing.
Nobody can convincingly proove that a sport is not manipulated.
Wrestling: We all know it.
Boxing: Maskes last fight, and he retires leads to a loss of a title
BIG WORK
Soccer: Look at germany, at the end there will always be at least
2 teams that can win the title, very strange
etc.
For me, wrestling is a great Soap Opera with action.
I admire(dont know correct word) the athletic and moves the
wrestlers make..
