The "singing" sounded more like loud mumbling.
you really needed to only put "Aerosmith" to end this discussion.

Don't you have to be rated to be overrated? Critics hated them.
Also as an aside to this convo, people get pissed when their favorite band is
called "overrated", but overrated doesn't equal "sucks" necessarily. I think
the Beatles are overrated because no band can possibly live up to the
ridiculous standard they have been put on, they can still be the "best band"
and be overrated. Also older bands can be overrated commercially in this
sense....the Beatles albums have been bought on FOUR formats..LP, 8Track,
Cassette and CDs...whereas a current artist doesn't get that benefit. On the
other hand, there are far more people in the USA than in the 60s.
Elvis was hurt by the tendency to buy singles vs albums in the fifties. Then
you have longevity vs total sales. Hootie and the Blowfish sold a gazillion of
ONE album, whereas a country artist like Johnny Cash, George Strait or someone
might have 20 albums selling 1 milliion copies each.
THEN you have "influence" vs "best". Madonna is a horrible singer, and for the
most part her songs suck, but she WAS popular and for good or bad, influenced a
lot of people.
People slam Eddie Van Halen now, but he has to be one of the most influential
artists because he almost singlehandedly (arguably of course) created the basic
blueprint of the typical late seventies/ all of the eighties power ballad/fun
song with solo in the middle...both his own work with Van Halen and then the
Beat It single with M. Jackson.
How many finger tapping guitar clones were spawned in the 80s? A billion.
However, many guitar fans think he is also one of the most overrated. Same
with Joe Satriani...a guy I happen to love, but I can see where he wouldn't be
someone else's thing.
The whole white rapper/commerical hip hop thing goes without saying.
People often confuse personal taste with influence and then also talent. Of
course, some of that is in the eyes of the beholder. I can't for the life of me
see the appeal of Bruce Springsteen for example.

Damn the Last 30 years???
thats a tough one....
While i can defend almost any artist or group right off the top of my
head, theres one that i can defend at all....
Ill say anything that involves Eric Clapton....
The music would still be the same if Eric Clapton never came on the
scene....
I cant even think of any songs hes performed except for that depressing
load of garbage Tears in Heaven song.

EDC - Him or one of those Super Divas like Mariah Carrey or Whitney

"I ROPE-A-DOPE THE EVIL,
WITH RIGHTEOUS BOBBING AND WEAVING,
AND LET THE GOOD GET EVEN" - Chuck D.
That's actually a really good pick. I don't hate Clapton--the opening
riff of "Layla" is memorable, as is the solo on "While My Guitar
Gently Weeps." But there are dozens and dozens of guitar players that
were more innovative, inspiring, technically gifted, etc. And much of
Clapton's output has been pretty mediocre. "Lay Down Sally"? Cover
of "I Shot the Sheriff"?
Still, we've got this "Clapton is God" stuff stuffed down our throats
for decades. So, yeah, his "rating" greatly exceeds his quality.
As to "all time overrated," I still say The Doors. And Madonna.--Joe
