THURSDAY MAY 22nd 1997
Leas Cliff Hall, FOLKESTONE, UK.
This was a King of the Ring tournament which we always hold each May in
Folkestone. We had Channel 4 TV cameras there, as they were doing a
feature on Doug Williams for their "Under the Moon" programme, which
shall be broadcast in the next 3-4 weeks.
KotR Round 1:
SLAYER NEWTON b TYRONE ARCHER - DQ. Archer dominated this brief match,
but was disqualified for kicking Newton repeatedly when he was on the
ground and refusing to break and let him up.
SEBASTIAN P. STERLING p JOHN STOKES with a front cradle whilst placing
his feet on the ropes. Stokes was in this as well as the main event as
he had signed for the KotR previous to agreeing to the main event and
didn't want to disappoint his local fans.
"WONDERKID" JONNY STORM b "FEARLESS" JODY FLASH by submission. Flash
missed a high elevation top rope splash, injuring his knee, and Storm
clamped on a half Boston for the submission.
ROBBIE "THE ROCKER" THOMAS p MUSCLES MANSFIELD. Mansfield thought he'd
won with his scorpion deathlock, but Thomas had reached the ropes.
Mansfield started to celebrate, and Thomas caught him with a reverse
cradle.
"THE ANARCHIST" DOUG WILLIAMS & GARY STEELE beat ANDRE "SLEDGEHAMMER"
BAKER & "THE EXTREMIST" JUSTIN RICHARDS. This was a superb exhibition of
the kind of technical wrestling Britain is known for worldwide. The
Channel 4 guys were certainly impressed! Williams pinned Richards with a
Niagara Driver.
After the interval, I announced that Slayer Newton was unable to
continue due to the beating he received from Tyrone Archer, so Jonny
Storm received a bye into the final.
KotR Semi Final:
ROBBIE THOMAS p SEBASTIAN P. STERLING with a cradle after escaping a
sunset flip.
KotR Final:
ROBBIE THOMAS p JONNY STORM with a Tiger Driver.
Handicap match main event:
THE FOLKESTONE FLYERS (John Stokes & Steve Smith) NC GUY THUNDER (sub
for Andre Baker, who decided he would be in the tag match - nothing to
do with Channel 4 TV being there, of course....) when the unthinkable
happened. Steve Smith turned on his best friend and tag team partner. He
and Thunder double teamed him until former local favourite MASS APPEAL,
who was in the crowd watching, saved Stokes. Then a challenge was made
and accepted for next time. Another handicap match, with Stokes & Mass
Appeal vs. Smith, Thunder & Andre Baker.
FRIDAY MAY 23rd 1997
Winter Gardens, MARGATE, UK.
Triangle challenge (winner to meet Guy Thunder):
2/3 falls: GARY STEELE drew with ANDRE "SLEDGEHAMMER" BAKER over 6x3
minute rounds at 1 fall each. Baker got the first with a sunset flip in
the 3rd, and Steele equalised by reversing another attempt at a sunset
flip by kneeling down and grabbing Baker's legs. A coin toss was won by
Steele to determine who fought Thunder.
ROBBIE "THE ROCKER" THOMAS, SLAYER NEWTON & "FEARLESS" JODY FLASH b "THE
WONDERKID" JONNY STORM, JORGE CASTANO & SCOTTY ROCK when Flash pinned
Rock with a shooting star press in a fast paced six man tag.
Submission match:
MUSCLES MANSFIELD b JOHN STOKES with his scorpion deathlock.
Triangle challenge:
GARY STEELE DDQ GUY THUNDER. Thunder lost his cool, unable to pin Steele
and both men ended up rolling on the mat choking each other. Referee
Luke Michael lost control and threw them both out.
Kiss My Foot match:
ALEX SHANE b "THE EXTREMIST" JUSTIN RICHARDS by reverse decision after
Richards pinned Shane with his feet on the ropes and several wrestlers
ran in to complain and referee Mike White declared Shane the winner.
GARY STEELE won a 12 man Rumble.
