Legit tough: The Great Wojo?

tough guys in pro-wrasslin comes up, Great Wojo is always one of hte first
one or two names Meltzer would bring up. So, can anybody tell me
something about his legit background that made Meltzer rave about him so?
How come he never made it "big"? Too undisciplined? Anyone know where he
is now?
These comments just seemed odd too me, since about the only memoires I
have of Wojo are from the mid-80s dying gasps of Bruisers WWA, including
him lying down for a very green Scott Steiner...

I remember an article about him in the local newspaper a couple of years ago
promoting a match against Leon Spinks. They mentioned his real name (Similar
last name as mine) and gave a brief history of him which should answer your
question.
His real job is a wrestling coach at the University of Teledo. He made it on
the olympic wrestling team in 1980 (later boycotted) and was an alternate in
1984 and 88. This is why he gives out $10,000 to any fan that can last 5
minutes with him in the ring. Obviously very few have. I'm not sure if it's
freestyle or grecko roman though.

out of Wojo's bodybreaker in his first ever match (at least that was the
gimmick at the time...)
Seriously, Wojo's big thing was the $10,000 challenge. He would challenge any
man to come out and see if they could pin him in five minutes or something
like that. And these, Dom, were NOT plants, and he did NOT hold back. Anyone
who got in the ring with him, unless it was such an obvious mismatch that he
would hurt the guy *seriously* (as in put the SOB in traction for a year),
he beat up the guy in a shoot. To my knowledge, he never lost.
And in the amateur ranks, Wojo was *the* stud. Some almanac someplace put
together a listing of all the wrestlers who won amateur championships, and
how many. Wojo is so far ahead of everybody else it's laughable. The man is
old and decrepit *now* (if he's even still alive), and I wouldn't want to
fight him for any amount of $$$.

At one of the NWA cards last year I talked with a pretty big guy who once
challenged Wojo. He ran hard right at him and Wojo didn't budge. He took a
couple of other legit shots at him that did nothing before Wojo bear
hugged him and slammed him down hard in a belly-to-belly type move for
the pin. The guy was in complete pain for a week afterwards.
I think a Wojo vs Dan Sevrin match would be _very_ interesting...

I read an article last year in a Detroit newspaper. It said that he is
a teacher. I forget if it was high school, substitute or elementary. It
mentined he still takes bookings. He lives and teaches in Toledo or
some other Ohio city.

He appeared to be in great shape. He was doing the gimmick they talk
about in the Observer. $10,000 if you could pin him. Needless to say, no
one came close. From the looks of his fitness then, he could still be
active if he wanted to.
Ole Anderson used to make the same offer in his younger days down in
Georgia.
