A couple weeks after the CMLL luchadores were dropped
from the show, the match maker puts in the Hardy Boyz.
Great move, it'll fill the void Santo, Bucanero, and
Felino left.
Mr Aguila/Merenguero vs Matt & Jeff Hardy
Damn cool match. The 1st big sequence has Aguila
throwing Jeff to the ropes, with Jeff sliding under
them and Merenguero, tripping him once on the floor.
Aguila follows with an attempted slingshot tornillo
somersault dive, but Jeff moves, and Aguila lands
it standing. Matt follows with a cross body over the
top, and is caught by both rudos. Jeff follows with
a running, hands free somersault dive over the ropes,
knocking everyone to the ground. Killer sequence!!!
Other highlights include Matt driving his knees into
a standing Merenguero's shoulder, with a moonsault off
the top. Jeff screws up an Arabian press moonsault.
Aguila HAMMERS Jeff and himself with a running
somersault dive to the side of the post, nearly
landing on a ringside crew member. Merenguero with an
ugly cross body dive through the ropes. The finish
has Matt whipped to a corner, grabbing the top ropes
to attempt a reverse headscissors counter. Aguila
counters the scissors with a face first powerbomb,
climbs to the top, and follows with a shooting star
press. Best US TV match of the week. The goofs writing
about the WWF having no worthwhile wrestling are full
of crap.
Pantera vs Shoichi Funaki
Nothing special. Pantera attempts a moonsault, TAKA
knocks him off the top, Funaki pins him with the MD II.
Torito vs Mini Nova
It ends before starting, in the dressing room.
Mini Nova and Mini Battalion beat down Torito, with
Max Mini making the save.

Aguila goes by Papi Chulo these days, FWIW.
> Jeff screws up an Arabian press moonsault.
I thought he hit that better than he usually does. Still wasnt that great,
though. Not one of Jeff's better spots, but he uses it all the time.
Now's as good a time as any to mention that Jeff apparently dyed the top of
his hair light purple. It looks awful.
> Merenguero with an ugly cross body dive through the ropes.
Nice of him to try to hang with the other high-flyers in the match, but it
wasnt happening. At least he has one cool move (though I havent seen him
use El Super-Merengueroplex in a while)

Damn nice SSP.

Welllll, I dunno. I think TAKA vs Jerry Lynn had it beat, even though it
was JIP. I also *really* liked Benoit and Malenko destroying Disorderly
Conduct on WCWSN, but that's kind of like comparing apples and oranges.
The WCWSN tag match was a squash, while the other matches had some sense of
parity (even if there was never much doubt as to who was booked to win).
The squash was at least a 9 out of 10 on the squash scale, and none of the
other matches got that high on their scales, so... Whatever. The main
problem is that this match was only about 5 1/2 minutes and it was pretty
much just a spotfest. It was a good bit of fun, though.

Most people dont get Super Astros, and even there they never show long
matches. Usually Super Astros is good for at least one fun quickie match,
but you can't compare that (or the occasional D-Lo vs Gangrel or whatever
on Shotgun) to the good, lengthy matches that WCW shows on free TV a few
times a month.
So I agree that it's not fair to say that WWF has *no* worthwhile
wrestling, but it doesnt have as much as *I* think it should.

Case in point. There wasn't even eight total minutes of wrestling in this
half-hour show. And instead of delivering on the promised third match, we
got sports entertainment.

Mister Aguila wrestled on the 5/1/99 episode of CMLL TV on
Galavision, as Mr Aguila. He started there, and had his best
series of matches there, and continues to wrestle there under
that name.

It looked like hell. I've seen him hit it perfectly a few times.

That reverse superplex is his only good move. I don't care
either way for the WWF Puerto Ricans, unless Perez is busting
his ass.
> Damn nice SSP.
It's a hell of a lot better than his shitty, feet 1st landing
450 splashes. He was the most impressive of the four in this
match. His CMLL TV match the day before sucked compared to
this.

How much footage was aired? I haven't had ECW TV aired over here
since 9/96, so I haven't seen it yet.

Saw most of that. Good for a squash. Nothing special.

What the hell is a 6 minute match going to aspire to, with three
young punk fliers/bump machines, other than a spot fest? A back
and forth match with slick sequences, and great flying, is a lot
better to me than a good 1 sided squash. That is, unless the guy
getting squashed is busted up real good.

Most people don't get ECW TV, and even then they never show long matches.
Besides, it's a 1/2 hour slot. With usually one rewatchable 4 to 8 minute
match a week.
>Usually Super Astros is good for at least one fun quickie match,
There have been a few 8 to 10 minute deals. Those are pretty rare
though.

Cable TV costs a good $30+ over here. You're making it sound like
WCW busts out a 10 plus minute match every show, with it being good
on top of that. Not this past week. I didn't recall one on the three
hour Nitro on 5/3. Didn't recall one on Sat Night.
> So I agree that it's not fair to say that WWF has *no* worthwhile

Me neither. Their big three TV shows suck hard for wrestling action.
Super Astros is good for juniors fighting juniors, and not often
getting squashed by shitty heavies.

And AAA topped it Monday night with segment #1746 of the Los Vipers/
Los Vatos Locos feud. A match that involved chairs, went into the crowd
(the card was held in a bull ring), tore apart some wooden billboards, saw
Charley Manson (God love 'em, he always seems to be the sacrificial lamb)
hoisted by his ankles (with hands tied) into the air about 10 feet above the
ground by a block and pulley, and saw Picudo doing a Ricky Steamboat
impersonation by spewing balls of fire at Los Vipers.
Just your typical Vipers/Locos madness.
D-Chance.
Arriba Los Vipers~!

I was complaining more about the fact that this was only 5.5 min. That it was
spot-driven was necessitated by the lack of time they got. That's kinda why
people often dis the WWF's in-ring product. I mean, in a sense, you can't blame
the Astros bookers. Try to put on a 20 minute TAKA/Funaki vs Hardy Boyz match in
front of a Sports Entertainment crowd, and the workers will be booed out of the
building, regardless of how good the match is.
> A back and forth match with slick sequences, and great flying, is a lot

Seeing Benoit and Malenko gel as a team is a terrific thrill for me. Seeing them
bust up a guy's knee Anderson-style was a great throwback. Seeing them mesh
vicious ringwork with hard-nosed bruiser posturing to get good heel heat was a
vindication of their overall ability. I also think they did a better job of
telling a story than the WWF flyers.
But if you dug the Astros match more, it's all good. It takes Diff'rent Strokes,
y'know?

Did I? I said "a few times a month". Usually I see at least one match I really
dig on WCW TV every week. That would be at least four a month, on average. WCW
airs at least 16 shows a month.
> Not this past week. I didn't recall one on the three

Nitro did manage to step even further into the crap hole this week, but the tag
title/nontitle/whatever match was almost as good as the Astros match, IMHO. On
WCWSN, I dug the 4H match and the Kaz-Rey match. Last week's Thunder was weak,
but the week before there was the 6-man tag featuring members of the tag title
feud. Worldwide this week had an okay Juvi vs Rey match. Percentage-wise, I'd
say that's a lot better than the WWF.
> > How much footage was aired?

Sounds better than than the Beniot/Malenko squash, and the
back and forth SA match. Even if it was clipped.

I enjoy the working over of arms, or legs, ect... to build to a
hot finish. It's still cool to see, even if the other guy gets in
little or no offense. It's a lot better when it's a back and forth deal.

Not really. At a recent Heat/Shotgun/Super Astros taping in my town,
an Aguila/Scorpio Jr/Funaki vs Santo/Negro/Tarzan match got a
no pop entrance, and 1st few minutes. When they all started killing
themselves, the crowd started getting into it more. They got a decent
ovation after the finish; it went about 7 or 8 minutes. Behind the
big non TV four way, it was the longest match of the 2 hour 45 min show.
What's the point of downing the WWF crowd as sports entertainment fans,
and not also quality action fans as well? It's a BS arguement. Any house
show I've been to- indy, lucha, WWF, all popped the same way. 1st for
known stars. 2nd for huge moves. 3rd for decent quality wrestling.

They were cool as hell in the Fall of '95 as a tag team. They're starting
to get some of the old fire back. Screw story in a short match. It was
cooler seeing Beniot backdrop suplex Guerrero off the top on Worldwide in
'95, nearly killing them both. Or other big moves.

Sounded like it to me. Most WCW cruiser matches are routine. The few
that go long are usually cool. Occasionally great. The ones that really
click are uncommon. I wish they were a few times a month.

By far. No doubt about it. It's harder for me to get excited about WCW's
idiotic match ups. One week they're great, the next two or three they're
awful.
