Lucha Libre Television Review #14

AAA/CMLL TV 12/27/97 through CMLL TV 1/12/98

Welcome to my fourteenth Galavision lucha libre TV review. After a few
weeks of goldbrickin, I'm back to what should be a weekly schedule.

AAA/CMLL TV 12/27/97

The show opens with the old intro, then Arturo Rivera interviewing
Pierroth and Fuerza for a few minutes.

Perro Aguayo/Perro Aguayo Jr vs Fuerza Guerrera/Mosco de la Merced

Mosco and Perro Jr do a couple good dives to the floor. After about
twenty minutes, Perro and Perro Jr make Mosco submit to a double hold.
They get Fuerza into a similar hold, but Mosco busts a bottle over
Perro Sr's head causing the rudo team to be disqualified.

Jerry Estrada vs Heavy Metal - dog collar chain match

Estrada has May Flowers in his corner, Metal has Winners. After about
fifteen minutes of average brawling and outside interference, Jerry
Estrada hits all four corners to win the match.

Next up is Leo Magadan and Dr Alfonso Morales showing highlights of
CMLL matches. The best of the highlights are Super Astro socking
Scorpio Jr right in the face with a blind springboard tope. Then Mr
Niebla nailing Rey Bucanero with a top turnbuckle to hardwood floor
moonsault.

Lady Apache vs Chaparita ASARI - CMLL Title Match

They both trade holds for a while, getting near falls with various
suplexes. ASARI gets a two count with a Skytwister Press. Apache hits
two top rope missile kicks, then a Tigerbomb for the match.

Next up is an AAA Noti segment. Showing a promo for Flying. Then some
pictures of what looks like Octagon's wedding. Then two monitors with
Canek and Cibernetico talking on them, with Flying walking around them.

Cibernetico/Canek/Fuerza Guerrera vs La Parka/Octagon/Tinieblas Jr

Pretty average first fall. The rudos take it after Fuerza groin fouls
Octagon a couple times, then gets him in a Scorpion Deathlock. Segunda
caida is average as well. Parka does some comedy spots. The technicos
take it after an Atlantis style back breaker hold by Parka, on Fuerza.
Tercera caida ends after Cibernetico rips off Tinieblas Jr's mask. No
good dives or anything. This whole episode was a strange year in review
show. None of the matches or angles seemed real important.

AAA TV 12/29/97

Histeria/Mosco/Maniaco/Firebird vs Ludxor/Fantomas/El Guerrero/Mascara
Sagrada Jr

Fantomas wears a black short sleeve suit with a white mask. El Guerrero
wears camouflaged clothes. Firebird looks like Negro Casas. Ludxor does
some of his head scissors variations and trades some fast holds with
the fake Histeria making him look all right. Fantomas hits Maniaco with
a good tope suicida. El Guerrero hits both Maniaco and Mosco with a
decent looking plancha from the top to the floor. Sagrada and Ludxor
pin Histeria and Fierbird with Huracanranas for the fall. Los Vipers
dominate the second fall getting Sagrada into a hold. Tercera caida
has Los Vipers dominating with chair shots and groin fouls, but they
are disqualified when Psicosis runs in with a chair.

El Picudo vs Perro Aguayo Jr

Picudo takes the first fall after Razor Edging Perro off the top. Perro
hits a nice looking tope suicida on Picudo. Then pins him with a real
clumsy looking cradle after a double stomp. After a third fall spill to
the floor, Picudo beats Perro into the ring causing him to lose by
count out. Perro yells at Tirantes, then starts brawling with Picudo.

Cibernetico vs Latin Lover

Cibernetico takes the primera caida after a press slam and pin. Lover
takes fall two with a kick to the face then La Majistral cradle. The
rudo ref Tirantes disqualifies Lover, who had Cibernetico in a legal
hold. I guess he did because Ludxor came out to help Perro Jr beat
down Picudo. Who were in the corners of Cibernetico and Latin Lover.
The real Ludxor then runs in and nails the fake Ludxor with his over
the top, twisting somersault plancha. The same one Juventud screwed up
on Nitro a couple weeks back. Ludxor unmasks the fake Ludxor, and it
turns out to be the fake Mosco de la Merced. The rest of Los Vipers
run in to end the match.

Fuerza Guerrera/Killer/Sangre Chicana vs Perro Aguayo/Vampiro/Heavy
Metal

The rudos take fall one. The technicos take fall two. Heavy Metal hits
a nice tope suicida on Sangre Chicana. The Killer comes in and helps
unmask Fuerza, who lays on Killer and pins him. Giving the match to
the technicos.

CMLL TV 1/3/98

Universo 2000/El Satanico vs Brazo de Plata/Shocker

Saturday episodes usually air at 5:00 PM PST. I turned on the TV at
2:00 PM to find this match in progress. So I guess I missed a match
or two before this. It's a tag tournament episode taped sometime in
December. Shocker turns on Porky for something. I think both teams are
disqualified.

Dr Wagner Jr/El Satanico vs Brazo de Plata/Fray Tormenta

Dr Wagner Jr and El Satanico take the match after a somersault onto
Porky, then a double team hold on Fray Tormenta. During the match, some
text scrolled across the bottem of the screen saying the Toluca vs
Monterrey futbol game was postponed, explaining why lucha was in its
time slot.

Universo 2000/Mascara ano 2000 vs Shocker/Lizmark

Shocker hits a far tope suicida on Mascara. Universo then hits one a
few feet shorter on Shocker. Lizmark then hits a tope suicida about as
well as Universo. Lizmark and Shocker take the match after a couple
pins.

Dr Wagner Jr/El Satanico vs Shocker/Lizmark

Dr Wagner Jr and El Satanico then runin for the final match of the
tourney. The rudos try to unmask Lizmark. After a few minutes of
average brawling, Satanico pins Lizmark with a powerbomb, reversing his
attempted Huracanrana.

CMLL TV 1/5/98

Rey Bucanero/Violencia/Karloff Lagarde Jr vs Ultraman
Jr/Fantasma/Mascara Magica

Violencia hits a nice top rope somersault elbow drop on Mascara Magica,
then rolls Fantasma forward into a hold for the first fall. Segunda
caida ends with Violencia being pinned by an in ring Asai moonsault by
Ultraman. Then Rey Bucanero giving up to Fantasma's inverted bear hug.
Mascara Magica nails Lagarde with a tope suicida. Ultraman Jr cracks
his hip on the hardwood floor during a great over the top somersault
dive onto Violencia. Karloff Lagarde Jr pins Mascara Magica after his
attempted Huracanrana by reversing it with a powerbomb for the match.

Universo 2000 vs Brazo de Plata - CMLL Heavyweight Title Match

Porky wins primera caida with a second rope splash. Universo wins falls
two and three with a leg lock and a cradle.

Emilio Charles Jr/Blue Panther/Apolo Dantes vs Atlantis/La Fiera/Mr
Niebla

The rudo team takes the first fall with a double elbow on Niebla by
Panther and Charles, then a top rope splash by Dantes. The technicos
take fall two with a Fiera Chicken Wing Cross Face on Dantes, then an
assisted Huracanrana on Charles by Mr Niebla. The rudos take the match
after Emilio Charles Jr reverses a Mr Niebla shoulder roll cradle, then
using the ropes to pin him.

AAA TV 1/10/98

Mini Goldust/Mini Vader/Mini Mankind vs La Parkita/Mini Nova/Super
Munequito

They only showed the third fall of this match. The good spots included,
Munequito hitting an assisted plancha onto Goldust. Parkita hitting an
Asai twisting dive onto Mankind and the guard rail. Super Novita
moonsaulting off the top turnbuckle to the floor onto Goldust. Parkita
hitting a turn around spring board moonsault onto Goldust. The match
ended with Parkita getting pinned by Mini Mankind after being hand
cuffed by Mexican Paul.

Histeria/Mosco/Mach 1/Picudo vs Venum/Ludxor/Supernova/Discovery

This match is one that I've been looking forward to seeing for months.
It first aired on the 3/31/97 episode, but I hadn't watched it. Just
hearing second hand how crazy the spots were. Histeria, Mosco de la
Merced, Venum, and Supernova are all the originals, making their scrub
replacements look like a big pile of Joe Gomez. This clipped version
of the match starts with Histeria swing DDTing Venum. All four Cadets
get whipped from the corners into each other into the middle of the
ring. They counter, and the three Cadets get Histeria, Mosco, and
Picudo into the six man starfish hold. While Nova pins Mach 1 in the
middle of the hold with a Huracanrana. That's a normal fall finish, but
Mach 1 kicks out and the rudos are thrown to the floor. Followed by the
Space Cadets who hit a quadruple tope suicida onto all four rudos,
causing a count out victory for the technicos. Segunda caida starts
with Histeria and Discovery. Histeria is arm dragged into the crowd.
Next in is Nova and Mach 1, with Nova hitting some good arm drags. Then
Venum and Histeria. Histeria whips, then kicks Venum through the ropes
into a chair Mosco's holding. Histeria then hits a huge over the top
rope somersault dive onto Venum, landing at least eight feet from the
ring, partially into the aisle. Next, Mach 1 drop kicks Discovery to
the floor, then lets fly with a really crazy over the top somersault
dive. Which he doesn't get enough distance with, and ends up being
slammed on the back of his head. Supernova then goes for a Huracanrana
on Picudo, but it's reversed into a powerbomb and jackknived over into
a pin. Mosco and Picudo pin Ludxor after a top rope Frankensteiner.
Tercera caida starts with Mach 1 and Picudo double teaming Discovery.
Histeria and Venum come in for more. Histeria drop kicks Venum and sets
him up for a top rope Frankensteiner, but Venum throws Histeria over
the post, onto the floor. Venum then stands on the top turnbuckle, and
does a great looking moonsault over the turnbuckle post, sending the
two crashing to the floor. Mosco then climbs that corner to dive on the
two, but Supernova powerbombs him off for a near fall. Mosco kicks
Nova through the ropes, then does a high Asai moonsault, which Nova
ducks. Mosco lands on his feet about seven feet from the ring. Nova
slid into the ring during the moonsault, and comes back with a sliding
kick sending Mosco onto his back about a foot and a half from the
aisle. Which is at least eight feet from the ring. Supernova then hits
a between the ropes, somersault dive, over shooting Mosco, and landing
a good nine feet from the ring, well into the aisle. Picudo lariets
Ludxor after a back flip. Ludxor then kicks Picudo to the floor, then
runs and hits his great over the top rope twisting somersault dive.
Mach 1 is slid out by Discovery, who springs up onto the top turnbuckle
and lets fly with a reckless somersault dive onto Mack 1's neck and
shoulders. Venum and Mosco hit the ring. Venum does Psicosis' spot in
the corner with the missed drop kick back flip. Mosco gets a near fall
with a Northern Lights Suplex, followed by an Arabian moonsault. Mosco
moonsaults Venum from the top, but is kicked in the gut with both feet.
Venum powerbombs Mosco near a corner, then pins him with a slightly
over shot, but well executed Shooting Star Press for the match. This
was a classic Cadets versus Vipers match. The only thing that could
have been done better would be a Histeria Space Flying Tiger Drop, and
a Venum Tornado Dive. Even with out these two dives, it still ranks up
there as a classic spotfest.

Abismo Negro vs La Parka Jr vs Hector Garza - Rey de Reyes '97

Garza reverse brainbusters Parka Jr off the top, then gets him in a leg
and arm hold to eliminate him. Garza suplexes Abismo out, then hits his
tornillo dive. Garza then drop toe holds Abismo, then pins him with a
Funjinami rolling pin, bridge hold.

Fuerza Guerrera vs Pantera vs Pentagon vs Octagon

Octagon eliminates Pentagon with his leg sweep stretch hold. Fuerza
fouls Octagon. Octagon arm drags Fuerza from the top. Then Fuerza is
eliminated for fouling Octagon again.

Octagon vs Heavy Metal vs Hector Garza vs Latin Lover

Octagon hits a hard tope suicida on Lover, knocking his shoe off in the
process, causing him to land barefoot really hard. Garza pins Metal
with a high in ring moonsault press. Lover pins Octagon with a cradle.
Garza misses a half twisting moonsault and Latin Lover pins him.

Pentagoncito/Mini Goldust/Mini Mankind vs Octagoncito/Mini
Cibernetico/Chivita - Triplemania V

Mini Ciber hits a good through the ropes somersault dive onto Mankind.
Mini Chiva goes off the top turnbuckle onto Goldust. Octagoncito hits
a running top rope Frankensteiner on Pentagoncito, then beats him with
his leg sweep stretch hold for the match. This was clipped a lot.

Histeria/Mosco/Maniaco vs Venum/Chivas Rayadas

Venum and Histeria start out. Venum goes off the top with a flying
head scissors on Histeria throwing him to the floor. Venum then gets
on the top turnbuckle and hits the same moonsault over the post as on
the 3/31/97 TV match. They immediately replay it, but for some screwy
reason show the 3/31 replay. One of the Chivas launches the other
over the top onto Mosco and Maniaco. The other Chiva then tope suicidas
all three. They replay the Venum post moonsault onto Histeria again.
Which is still from the wrong match. Histeria, Mosco, and Maniaco are
thrown to the floor. A Chiva hits a tope. The other hits a top rope
plancha. Venum cartwheels and does a twisting backflip over the top
rope, but gets caught up in it. Mosco still catches him like it was
done well. Histeria fouls Venum, but the rudo ref disqualifies the
technico team instead. They show a replay of Venum's post moonsault
onto Histeria, but get it right this time. A replay of an in ring Venum
moonsault. A Chiva dive. Then Mosco de la Merced's somersault drop kick
into Venum's face. This was another great match, but really clipped.
Maybe 1/5 of the entire match aired.

Pierroth Jr vs Latin Lover

Latin Lover wins with a top rope frog splash.

Los Payasos vs Super Muneco/Mascara Sagrada Jr/La Calaca - Cage Match

This is the match where La Calaca loses his mask. They show maybe the
last five minutes of a thirty minute match. Payaso Coco Amarillo makes
it out, leaving Calaca last in the ring. They don't bother showing the
unmasking, which defeats the purpose of having this in a year in review
show. This episode aired at 9:15 PM PST, which is about four and a half
hours late. Damn futbol aired for over ten hours on Saturday. Plus that
extra fifteen minutes to cause a bad, extra clip job to an already
heavily clipped year in review show.

Sangre Chicana vs Heavy Metal

They brawl all over the arena getting busted open. Sangre Chicana wins
after Pepe Casas disqualifies Heavy Metal.

CMLL TV 1/12/98

Arkangel/Chicago Express/Nygma vs Ultraman Jr/Fantasma/Tony Rivera

Nygma recently jumped from Promo Azteca. On Promo Azteca TV, they used
the spelling Enigma. On this episode, they showed a graphic with Nygma,
so I guess there are variations to a lot of name spellings in lucha.
Nygma wears a purple body suit with ? marks all over it, and a partial
black mask with white face paint. The Galavision video feed has been
screwing up a lot over the last hour. Every few minutes, there is a
blank screen with No Signal at the top of the screen. Plus when the
video and sound did air, it was often garbled. The rudos take primera
caida with an Arkangel Tigerbomb. Chicago Express and Nygma hit a cool
double team powerbomb, top rope drop kick combo on Ultraman. Arkangel
assists Ultraman in pinning Chicago with a moonsault, and Rivera gets
Nygma into a hold for the fall. From what I could actually see of the
third fall out of replays. Ultraman hit a nice somersault dive off the
apron onto Arkangel, and Fantasma made Nygma submit to an inverted
bear hug.

Shu el Guerrero/Mano Negra/? vs Olimpico/Solar I/?

The unknown to me rudo is an old guy with a skull on the chest of his
outfit. With no mask, and looks similar to Satanico. The unknown
technico is that decent guy with the O on his chest. Maybe named Mario
Choan? That's what it sounds like they may be saying. The technicos
take the fall after a Solar leg hold. The rudos take fall two with a
wacky Shu el Guerrero hold. Shu gets Olimpico into a fireman's carry,
then spins him and Stunners him in a funny looking move. The unknown
O technico hits a great looking Asai moonsault to the floor onto Mano
Negra. Just as Olimpico hit a great over the top somersault dive into
the aisle onto Shu. The video went screwy after the dives, but it looks
like Solar got the unknown rudo into a hold for the match.

Cien Caras/Universo 2000/Satanico vs Mr Niebla/La Fiera/Brazo de Plata

There is several minutes of average first fall action. La Fiera hits an
off the apron crotch dive onto Satanico, smashing into the front row
of chairs. The signal goes out, and Mr Niebla got a fall over Cien
Caras somehow. On the replay, Niebla pins Cien with a Huracanrana. Fall
two had the rudos beat on Niebla and try to unmask him. I didn't catch
how they took the fall. The rudo team gets too rough with Niebla, so
the ref disqualifies them. Post match has Cien and the other rudos
continue to beat on a stretchered Mr Niebla, and continuing a couple
minutes with interviews.
