Wrestling musnīŋŊt be dropped from Olympics
The International Olympic CommitteeīŋŊs executive boardīŋŊs
decision to drop wrestling from the global quadrennial
event from 2020 onwards is shocking, to say the least.
While there is still a slim chance that the sport may
return to the Olympic fray if the decision is not
ratified by the IOC general assembly in September, it is
nonetheless deeply disappointing that the initial vote
was cast against the sport apparently because it failed
the īŋŊtelegenic' test. Wrestling was ranked īŋŊlow' by the
mandarins of the Olympic Board in terms of popularity,
global TV audience and tickets sold at the London Games.
The sport was unable to garner support of the Olympic
officials who are ostensibly trying to maintain a sense
of relevance, modernity and youthfulness in the Winter
and Summer Games. Yet, this sport has been been part of
the modern Olympics (1896 onwards) in every Games except
in 1900. In fact, it made its first appearance at the
ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC and along with track and
field events, is considered to be one of the oldest
competitive sport. Ironically, it was perhaps the
īŋŊtraditional' nature of the sport that seems to have
spelt its doom.
