How to learn engines/parts?

I own 650sx (very little modifications, haven't done any myselft yet)
and I'm going to get a race-modified SJ.

So what's the best way (books,internet,asking people?) to learn how
these engines are built? so that I could name most of the parts and
understand those mods better.

It helps to have a source that is familiar with stock engines and a source that is familiar with mods and what they do. Then
you can decide what you want and you can start with the simple things and graduate to the more difficult things. Don't be
afraid to try something but also be prepared to make some mistakes.
