Fuhr played an EXTREMELY solid game in net for Buffalo's season debut
win over the defending chumps, the Rangers. What do you folks think
this means for the Sabres goaltending in general? Why put in Hasek if
Fuhr is hot? Being a Hasek fan (and disappointed he didn't play), I
wonder if we can expect some sort of a trade (I'd guess Fuhr). Who's
likely to get the #1 goalie spot... Looks like Fuhr is in the lead
thus far.

Hey John, you already know my preference for Fuhr, but I heard that the
reason Hasek didn't play was conditioning. He's a few pounds overweight
and needs to practise his way into shape before he sees any action. I
still say we trade Hasek, who'll bring a lot more in trade, and take our
chances with Grant for 2 or 3 seasons. In that time we could surely
draft or trade for a top goaltending prospect.

Hardly. Wait until the Rangers - and the other teams - regain their
shooting eyes.

Perhaps because Hasek is better? Grant Fuhr's not worth a damn and never
was. The most overrated goalie since Jaques Plante.

Nobody wants Fuhr. He would have been gone last year if they did.

You aren't going to find a prospect likely to be as good as Hasek. He was
the best goalie in the league last year. Why on earth would you get rid of
the best goalie in the league in the hope of future prospects?

Fuhr is playing in the hope that he will appear to do well enough that
some poor schmuck will want to take him in a trade.

cordially, as always,

As always, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. It's hard
to imagine how someone can be wrong *all* the time, but you manage to do it.

If the Sabres had to move a goalie, it would obviously HAVE to be Fuhr, no question about it. He's getting up there in years and how much longer do you think he'll remain at NHL-caliber level? Buffalo has that Shields guy in the minors, so it's not like they're gonna screw themselves over by moving Fuhr.

They should've acted last season and dealt Grant to Detroit for Yzerman. Just imagine : Yzerman, LaFontaine and Hawerchuk all on the same team! Pretty solid centering core if you ask me. Yzerman would have easily been able to fill Lafontaine's shoes, and tell me, did Grant Fuhr really have that big impact last year? I mean, how much playing time did he see in the playoffs?

Dealing Fuhr now and not getting ripped off is definitely tough at this point. Not too many teams would be willing to part with much in the way of offense to get him. Washington is a good example. Their goaltending would definitely be improved with Fuhr, but who (or what) can they offer? Other teams who could, in my opinion, use Fuhr, but not necessarily afford him would be LA (for a year or so), Winnipeg, Quebec (see LA), Calgary, Chicago (just kidding), and Philadelphia.

The Sabres must make a move. Although Fuhr is the better goalie, his age
is not on his side. But any team that has a chance to win the cup and
needs a goalie would be crazy not to trade for Fuhr. Fuhr is still the
best clutch goalie in the league and has enough in him to make a couple
of more runs. Until Hasek proves me wrong, Fuhr is still the better of
the two. One outsstanding season does not replace a hall of fame career
had by Fuhr.

Why would the Sabres need another scoring centre?

Fuhr *was* one of the best goalies in the league.

I would disagree with the notion, though, that Fuhr *is* one of the best
goalies in the league. If you use his Cup rings to "prove" it (a dubious
notion, even in a player's prime, IMO), you might as well bring Georges Vezina
from the grave as well.

And of course, a goaltending duo of Bernie Parent and Tony Esposito would
really be great in the nets for the Rangers...

Because he never got the chance to. Besides, not being as good as Fuhr at his
prime is nothing to be ashamed of.

>It is also true that Fuhr only has a couple really good years left in him, but

I am not sure that Fuhr has a couple really good years left in him, since, IMO,
he has bombed 3 of the last 4 years.
