I don't know exactly where Gelinas is from, but he's for sure from Quebec.
I know that he had been playing is junior hockey in Hull (the city next to
Ottawa). As for the pronunciation, being a french-canadian ( and believe it
or not, a strong federalist), I pronouce it correctly :-)

Yves Fredette the flying frenchman
(pronouce it as "Eve", like Yves St-Laurent or Yves montand :-) )

mar-TAN (stop just short of pronouncing the "n")

Its simple really, its mar-TAI jell-ee-NA. Its kind of hard to represent
in English. Martin is pronounced without the ending "n" and you don't
pronounce the s at the end of his surname. The J sound is a soft j that
we don't have in english but is quite common in French. Martin is a

My favorite mispronunciation of Martin Gelinas is by Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton,
who has a 4-8 drive home sport's talk show on the all-sports Mighty 690
(which operates out of San Diego, but can be picked up throught Southern
Californa). Lee must think Martin has a little Latin blood in him, because
he pronounces his name: Martin Helena (like the capital of Montana).
He also pronounces Al Iafrate: Al I-uh-freight. This Hacksaw guy (I don't
know where he got his nickname, but I don't think it came from playing
sports), claims to be a hockey expert. He sometimes mentions that he did
the play-by-play for the Cleveland WHA franchise in the mid-1970's. In the
same breath he thinks that Boston would seriously trade Craig Janney and Glen
Wesley for just Luc Robitaille, and he calls Rod Brind'Amour a defensemen
(atleast he pronouced his name properly).
It's kind of sad because the Mighty 690 carries the LA Kings radio broadcasts
and Lee sometimes does the post game show. Another thing that really bothers
me is that for a road game, the King's broadcasts are delayed on radio, but
are shown live on TV on Prime Ticket. Lee claims that this is the way the
King's want it and have always done it this way, but my guess is that live
King's radio from an east coast game would take too much time away from this
loudmouth's valuable talk show time. He probably insisted that the games be
delayed. I wish the Kings and/or the Mighty 690 would hire Brian Golden of
the Antelope Valley Press to do the post game show. Although he is primarly
a sports writer, he has been on radio a few times and he seems like the
most hockey knowledgable media-type in southern California. It would be nice
to be able to ask questions to somebody who actually knows something about
hockey instead of some large bag of steam who calls himself Hacksaw.

Gary Green of TSN says "nu-kyu-lar".

He does get the players' names right, 'tho.

(Remember Joel Quenneville? When he came up with the Leafs, they thought he
might be French (or at least use a French proununciation), so they said his
name as "kenn-veel". Nope, he corrected 'em. His family says "kwen-vill".)

Isn't there an e-acute after the G? MarTIN is somewhere between your
TAI and the n~ as in "pin~a colada" (pinch your nose, but swallow that
N!); GELinas is somewhere between JAY and YEAH

ESPN and MSG (Rangers) have some pretty bad ones ... Jah-linus! (-;
Or, howabout "Ives Race-ein" for Yves Racine (Red Wings)? (-;

>He also pronounces Al Iafrate: Al I-uh-freight.

One MSG guy had problems pronouncing Dave McLlwain (Winnipeg Jets)!
And "Jiggs" MacDonald of SportsChannel NY kept saying Ed Old-Chuck
(Olczyk, or ole-chick) all the way through last Friday's game with the
Winnipeg Jets.*

Do you say noo-clee-ur or noo-coo-loor? (nuclear)

gld

* Not that I'm complaining, but every Devils or Islanders road game to
Winnipeg on SportsChannel has been given away as a free sample on our
cable system so far this year ... (We don't have SCA, either.)

On the subject of names that get butchered, Peter Taglianetti of
the Penguins (formerly of the Jets and NorthStars) has to be one of the
worst. Ever since day one, people have been pronouncing it
TAG-LEE-AH-NET-TEE, but he mentioned several times that the 'g' is
silent, that it is TAL-E-AH-NET-TEE.

AGREED!!

The King's 'Flagship' radio station carries many road games delayed, and even
missed one this year altogether. What kind of coverage is that for the
division leaders? Come on Bruce, buy a radio station. Also, it makes me
sick when prime ticket has a CLIPPERS game on instead of a Kings game.
Come on Bruce, buy a TV station. What do I spend all this money on tickets
for? My observations have noted at least as many kids in the malls with Kings
t-shirts and jackets and hats as any other pro team in LA. Definitely more than
either the Rams, Dodgers or Clippers. Possibly rivalled by the Lakers and the
Raiders. And among adults, Kings paraphenalia is more common. Now, I know that
this is a very unscientific observation, and seeing that there is a gang in LA
which calls itself the Kings, and goes around with Kings hats on, this may be
a bias. (But, there is also a gang called Raiders with the same idea)

The point is, the Kings are a major force in the NHL for the last few years,
have a big following in LA, and don't get nearly the coverage they deserve.

I guess they will have to win that big Cup for the media to notice. Luckily,
that is going to happen REAL SOON!!!

SPOILER: Kings 9-1 over Vancouver. McSorely 6 points! Taylor 996th point.

PS, why can't Chicago win when you finally want them too?
