Kings 2 @ Montreal Canadiens 3 (OT) - 06/03/93

In a game in which they were badly outplayed, the Kings couldn't hold the lead
and lost to the Canadiens, 3-2 in overtime, before a standing-room only sell-
out crowd of 17,959 at the Montreal Forum last night. This best of seven series
is now tied a 1-1. The Kings were within 1:13 and 1/4 of an inch of stealing a
victory and a 2-0 series lead. Acting on a tip from someone watching the Kings
Leafs series, Guy Carbonneau informed Coach Jaques Demers that Marty McSorley
was using an illegal stick. Down 2-1 with 1:13 left in the 3rd period, Demers
asked referee Kerry Fraser to check the stick. Players are allowed a curvature
of 1/2 inch on their stick and McSorley's was over. McSorley went to the box,
Demers pulled Roy and the Canadiens tied the game on the 6on4 advantage.

The Canadiens dictated play for most of the game, completely shutting down the
Kings offense. The Kings were outchanced and outshot (41-24) as goaltender
Kelly Hrudey kept the Kings in the game.

Defenseman Eric Desjardins scored all three goals for the Habs and in doing so,
became the first defenseman in Stanley Cup history to record a hat-trick in the
Cup finals.

The Kings fell to 2-2 in overtime games this playoff season while the Habs im-
proved their overtime record to 8-1, including 8 consecutive wins, which ties
the NHL record held by the NY Islanders.

1st period:
Montreal outshot the Kings 16-5 in the period. The Kings looked flat and the
period seemd to have no flow to it as referee Kerry Fraser couldn't control his
oral fixation, whistling 10 penalties in the period. Both teams were awful on
the power play with the Kings recording only 2 shot on goal and the Habs only
1 shot on goal with the man advantage.

05:57, Odelin checked McSorley into the baords, Habs zone, and followed it up
with a shot to the face. 2 for roughing.

06:40, With the Kings on the power play, Robitaille took down Desjardins in the
near corner, Habs zone. 2 for hooking.

07:05, On the 4on4, Brisebois nailed Granato from behind. 2 for interference.

10:25, Blake took down Leeman. 2 for tripping.

10:38, On the Canadiens power play, Taylor dumped the puck behind the Habs net
and went after the puck. As he went behind the net, Roy got his stick up and
into the face of Taylor. 2 for high sticking (served by Bellows).

13:01, Watters was holding Muller's stick and Muller responded by dumping
Watters. 2 for holding, 2 for tripping.

14:44, On a 3on2 in the Kings zone, Carbonneau tried to skate around Sydor and
Darryl got his stick between his legs and Carbonneau went doen. 2 for holding.

17:02, Just 18 seconds after the penalty to Sydor expired and the Kings
pressuring the Habs, Schneider checked Granto and followed it up with a stick
check up high. 2 for high sticking.

17:53, Off the draw in the Habs zone, Granato went into the corner after the
puck and wrapped his stick around a Habs player, pulling him down. 2 for
holding.

The Canadiens got on the board first on a shot from the point.

0-1. Desjardins 2 (Damphousse, Lebeau), 18:31

Sydor and Lebeau fighting for the puck along the near baords, in the circle.
Damphousse dug out the puck and passed it back to Desjardins at the point. He
set up and fired a low shot that beat Hrudey tweeners. Hrudey appeared to
expect Lebeau, who had moved to the net, to try and tip the shot as Kelly leaned
to his left and his stick came up off the ice. Hrudey slammed his stick on the
ice after the goal.

-The Canadiens badly outplayed the Kings at even strength. Desjardins and
Schneider were very effective in neutralizing and checking Gretzky. The Habs
were able to produce a number of outnumbered attacks early to set the Kings on
their heels.

2nd period:
We only had 6 penalties in the period and the Kings evened the game while
killing a penalty

1-1. Taylor 3 (unassisted), 5:12 (sh)

With Huddy off for cross-checking, the Habs set up the power play. The puck,
in the far corner, was sent to the point and Brisebois couldn't control it.
Taylor swept it into the neutral zone and broke down the wing on a breakaway.
He sakted to he top of the circle and fired a low shot that beat Roy tweeners
on the ice. After the goal, it appeared Roy was not to pleased with himself as
he had lifted his stick off the ice and allowed the puck to get through.

The whistle blew at the 9:43 mark and McSorley and Damphousse got tangled up and
both went off for roughing. The incident started on a Habs rush. Damphousse
got a rising shot that Hrudey gloved, and thought he held, but the puck dropped
below him. As he sat on it, Keane and Watters went flying over Hrudey, knocking
the net off the magnets. On the ensuing scuffle, McSorley and Damphouse ex-
changed phone numbers and off they went.

At the 16:02 mark, Robitaille and Dionne mixed it up in front of Hrudey and
they both received 2 for roughing.

-The Canadiens again outplayed the Kings at even strength and both teams power
play looked awful. The Kings took advantage of a mistake to tie the game.

3rd period:
01:31, Blake hit Brunet with a hard, open ice hit and Brunet returned a 2 handed
slash to the back of Blakes legs. 2 for slashing.

02:13, Damphousse checked Gretzky and followed it up with a high stick to the
face. 2 for cross checking. The Kings now had a 2 man advantage but could do
nothing with it. Carbonneau got a breakaway, on the 2 man advantage, and
Hrudey made a nice stick save.

04:17, Zhitnik got his legs between the legs of Muller and he went down. 2 for
tripping.

Good hustle by Taylor, Granato and Conacher was rewarded as the Kings grabbed
the lead.

2-1. Conacher 6 (Taylor, Granato), 8:32

A shot on net was stopped by Roy, the rebound came out on the far side and
Granato knocked it behind the net. Leeman and Taylor fought for the puck behind
the net and Taylor finally worked it out the near side and tried to jam it in.
Roy made the save, along the post, but the rebound went to the top of the crease
where Conacher got a backhand that slipped through the pads of Roy as he moved
to cover the front of the net.

11:56, Taylor went off for interference on Roy. With Gretzky and Taylor on a
2on1. Taylor crashed the net when Gretzky dropped the puck back to McSorley who
was trailing the play. As McSorley shot the puck, Taylor skated through the
crease and bumped Roy, drawing the penalty.

13:16, Brisebois for cross checking when he checked Granato from behind after
Tony had fallen on the puck.

18:15, the whistle blew and Demers asked referee Fraser to measure the stick of
Marty McSorley. McSorley went off for delay of game and Demers pulled Roy for
the extra attacker and the Habs had a 6on 4 advantage with 1:45 left in the 3rd
period.

2-2. Desjardins 3 (Damphousse, Schneider), 18:47 (pp)

With the puck in the Kings zone, Desjardins, at the point, passed to Damphouse
in the far circle. He skated to the top of the circle and returned the pass to
Desjardins who was at the top of the slot. Huddy and Blake left LeClair standing
at the top of the crease to screen Hrudey as Desjardins shot off the pass,
beating Hrudey high in the right corner over the glove.

Overtime:
Carrying the adrenaline from tying the game into the overtime, the Habs struck
just 51 seconds into the period.

2-3. Desjardins 4 (Brunet, Ronan), 0:51

Ronan, along the near boards at the Habs blue line picked up the puck and passed
to Brunet at center ice. He skated into mthe near circle, Kings zone, and
passed back to Desjardins near the top of the circle. Desjardins shot off the
pass, sending the puck over the net. The puck hit the glass and deflected down
off the back of the net to the ice. Brunet picked up the loose puck, came out
to the near post and passed to Desjardins who was just inside the top of the
circle. Desjardins set up and wristed a shot that beat Hrudey. low, between
the pads for the overtime victory.

-The Kings should take note in that they played a poor game and still nearly
came away with the victory. The series moves on to Los Angeles and the Kings
did take the home ice advantage away from the Canadiens.

Notes/Quotes:
-------------
-Coach Barry Melrose, made no lineup changes.

-Sydor replaced the full face shield he wore in game #1 with a half-shield that
covers the mouth area.

-On the McSorley stick incident: "It's his fault, he played with it," Guy
Carbonneau said. "Some guys used illegal sticks and changed them late in the
game. Luc did. But even then I think Luc's stick was illegal. From the first
period of game 1, I knew it. But tonight, I kept reminding him [Demers]. I re-
re him in the first period. After they took the lead with about six, seven
minutes to go, I tried to remind him again."

From McSorley: "I don't feel good about it. I made a mistake." Marty said he
knew there was a problem with the curvature on his new batch of sticks but
thought he had taken care of the problem. "I used a torch to striaghten them
out. But I guess I didn't do that one. I'm not going to stay up all night
worrying about it. I made a mistake. I'm not advoiding responsibility. I'm
just going to put on my gear and play." McSorley will receive an automatic $200
fine for the illegal stick.

-During the last 54 years, the team that has won the first game of the final has
won the Cup 44 times (81.5%).

-The Stanley Cup Finals have been set for June 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15

-The Kings were 1-1-2 in the 4 games vs Montreal in the regular season.
