DETROIT RED WINGS DRAFT PREVIEW FOR 1990.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OVERALL LOOK:

Detroit Red Wings' GM Jimmy Devellano had hoped to have his cake and eat it,
too, by squeaking into the playoffs and drafting 6th overall.
He'll have to settle for just cake, the third overall pick in this year's
draft, as the Wings ended a terrible season by finishing last in the Norris.

DRAFT PICKS THIS YEAR:

Detroit has 13 picks for the 12 rounds this year.
Additional selections: A 5th round pick from the RANGERS for Chris McRae
Traded selections: NONE

DRAFT TENDENCY:

With chief scout Ken Holland's keen eye for talent, western Canada has been a
fertile ground for the Wings in recent years. The Wings prefer junior players
over college players.

KEY DECISION MAKER:

GM Devellano will be the main man for the first three rounds. After that, he'll
retain right of veto, but will turn the draft over to chief scout Ken Holland.

DEVELLANO SAYS:

"It's a good draft, with some depth to it. Like most drafts, there are very
few players who can step in and play next year. But there will be a lot of NHL
players out of the first three rounds. The first seven or eight are quality
players."

1989 UPDATE:

Mike Sillinger, a center taken 11th overall, has had an excellent year for
the Regina Pats of the WHL. He had 57-72-129 in 70 games.

Bob Boughner, a defenseman taken 32nd overall, "made progress," says
Devellano, "but obviously he has a ways to go." Boughner had 7-23-30 and
122 penalty minutes in 49 games for Sault Ste. Marie of the OHL.

Niklas Lidstrom, a defenseman taken 53rd overall, progressed well enough that
the Rangers tried to acquire him in a deal at mid-season. Lidstrom had
8-8-16 in 39 games for Vasteras of the Swedish Elite League.

1988 UPDATE:

Kory Kocur, a right winger taken 17th overall, struggled early in his first
pro season. He had 18-37-55 in 79 games for Adirondack of the AHL.

Serge Anglehart and Guy Dupuis, defensemen taken 38th and 47th overall, are
big, defenseive specialists who will be at Adirondack next season. Anglehart
was 2-19-21 with 131 pelaty minutes in 48 games with Drummondville and Laval
of the QMJHL. Dupuis was 8-41-49 in 70 games for Hull of the QMJHL.
