I've tried to think only about a free swing not touch the body at all,
but it throws my timing all out of whack.
Does anyone know any drills for this?
Thanks,
John
Well, at least no one will acuse you
of having a "chicken-wing" swing...
Swing the club in front of you.
On the backswing side, keep the left arm straight always.
On the front swing side, keep the right arm straight always.
(Reverse if you are a lefty).
Alter your plane so the club is reasonably straight through
the impact zone (but do this with no ball, just stand
there and swing the club back and forth through the air).

Put a towel or clubhead cover in your armpit and make sure you drop it
at the top of your swing!
Get a piece of rope about 4 feet long. Hold one end under your left
armpit while placeing your left hand in your pocket, you won't be
needing it for this drill. With your right hand hold the other end of
the rope so the rope is taught and simulates your left arm. Practice
making backswings and downswings.
You'll notice to keep the rope taught in the backswing and downswing
you need to try to keep your right arm extended which keeps your right
elbow away from your side. The tricep is active, not the bicep. If
you tuck your right elbow it slacks and bends the rope. This same
action also tries to bend your left arm if it were being used when
swinging the club. It makes you wonder why so many teachers teach you
to tuck your right elbow when all it does is add negatively to what
you are trying to do.
Keep doing this drill until you teach your right arm to want to stay
extended (extensor action) keeping that right elbow away from your
body.

It's glued to your right side because you've cocked your wrists and
not compensated it with proper arm movement and speed. If you have
too much arm movement and not enough wrist cock, your right elbow will
flare out too much. You need to get the right mixture..so you can
keep your swing in a sphere.
