I know liberals love this sort of thing but to me this is as wrong as
anything can be. Who did this guy harm? I said harm - not offend.

guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 1 August 2012 15.47 EDT

A Lithuanian man who gave a Nazi salute during an Olympic basketball
match has become the first person to be convicted of a racially
aggravated offence at the Games and fined £2,500. He was told that his
behaviour and that of other Lithuanian fans was "despicable".

Petras Lescinskas, 36, an accountant from Lithuania, was arrested on
Tuesday at the Olympic basketball arena during the Lithuania-Nigeria
match. Stratford magistrates court was told that he and other
Lithuanian supporters had been behaving in such a loud and aggressive
manner that other spectators moved away from them. There were "monkey-
style noises when Nigerian players had the ball", the court heard.

WTF? What ever happened to free speech and "sticks and stones". Looks like
UK has incorporated into law the anti-Chick-Fil-A mentality.....you can't
express yourself.

I suppose instead of convicting the guy of a racially aggravated offense,
they could have gotten him on their "anti-social offense" laws.

Of course, the people protesting against the company, and those who
are protesting for the company also have free speech.

True. But the protests against the company are attempting to influence
others to harm the company.

Of course. The three liberal Mayors who vowed to block Chicfila business
should be tossed out of office.

The press did not go after them.

Let's say a man takes out his Johnson out during mass. It is highly
offensive (non-harming) behavior.

Let's say a person makes disgusting noises or farts in a restaurant...

People should have a minimum of CIVILIZED behavior.

We need to cut hatred in the bud.

The Queen hasn't granted her subjects or those in her dominions the
right of free speech.

The real issue is that government officials are attempting to censor
speech. Emanuel, Menimo and others should be impeached.

It could not be more clear how liberals and the media feel about free
speech. They don't like it.

Back in the day liberals stood against, "The Man." Now we see what happens
when they become the man. These people have flipped 540 degrees and become
the scourge of Liberty.

They should be shamed and ridiculed. They are traitors to every cause, but
their own.

Depends on the repercussions. Not eating at the restaurant is fine.
Attempting to influence others to destroy the business and the owner is
bullshit.

It is not a homosexual "marriage" issue at all. It is a question of free
speech.

White men are always the victims under a Democrat President.

That's why Tim McVeigh killed so many and Holmes (a lawful gun owner)
went postal in a theater.

Who cares if the victims were mostly white?

Now, if only the American white people would stop praising blacks who
play in the NFL or represent us in the Olympics.

Then we would stop being victims.

No! There are uncountable Republicans who maintain that those left
wing crazy "Occupy Wall Street" asses should have been shot by the
National Guard, just like those fucking anti-American students at Kent
State back in 1970.

It's the only way to keep the peace.

That's right. No one is saying that chicky execs nor their critics be
prosecuted criminally. In UK though, that's what happens.

The limits of free speech should be extremely narrow, or the limits of those
laws that restrict it?

I ask because it's not clear which you mean.

So free speech should be highly limited, and most subjects and topics should
be prohibited to talk about?

Tell me then, what topics and subjects would be permissible to talk about
under what you envision as the narrow limits of free speech?

Would I be able to talk about the failings of political figures?

Point out how a piece of proposed legislation is bad?

So please feel me in on what the specific limits of free speech should be
narrowly limited to.

When one talks about limits in math, machine tools, etc those are the
boundaries in which answers, movement, etc are allowed.

Narrow limits implies limits close together with little "free space" between
them, and thus things are tightly controlled.
Wide limits implies limits that are far apart with much "free space" between
them, allowing for minimal control.

But anyway I think I understand what you're trying to say. That the
restrictions on free speech should be narrow and limited. Which means that
the limits of free speech should be very broad, with little that is off
limits to free speech.

FYI. It helps when asked what you mean, not to simply repeat what you've
been asked to clarify. Repeating yourself doesn't do much to clarify.

Millions loved Hitler, millions loved Bush. 4 million watch Fox
News. 15 million listen to Rush.

How can millions be wrong?

What is wrong with a Nazi salute, a damn toothbrush mustache or a
Muslim woman wearing a Hijab walking 6 steps behind her man who lives
next door to you?

It doesn't hurt anybody! If Christ was killed by the electric
chair instead of the Crucifix, good Christians would be wearing tiny,
little electric chairs around their necks and they would be on the
steeples of your local Church.

Why are people upset about simple actions that are harmless?

Well, the Nazi salute isn't any worse that that black power bullshit salute

Neither have a place in the Olympics, but neither should be illegal.

The "attacks" of 9/11 never made a spit of difference to me, nor had they

Why? Isn't using force to implement change a valid strategy?
Sometimes the only way to get some people to take notice is to apply a
little force.

No, it isn't. No one's right to free speech has been violated.
You just want the right to say what you want and have no responsibility
for what comes out of your mouth. The two are mutually exclusive.

I'm no fan of fascists, but this does seem to be a rather severe
penalty for raising your hand. I'm surprised there is such a law in
Great Britain. On the other hand, they did take a pounding during the
war, and I'm sure feelings run deep.

"Using force to implement change a valid strategy?" Sometimes, yes. But,
not in this case. It was a guy giving his opinion. Don't like it, don't
eat at his restaurant, don't talk to him, turn off the TV if you see him.

But, organizing as a group to destroy the corporation? That's bullshit.

The 2nd. bans speech impediments BY GOVERNMENT. When Mr. Romney was in
charge, was he GOVERNMENT or PRIVATE BUSINESS?

The Red Sox may prohibit cheering the New York Yankees in Fenway Park,
and -contrary to your misguided beliefs- that would NOT be a 2nd.

Guy then loses his job as chief financial officer of a medical equipment

For trying to censor free speech.

The ACLU should be on Chick-fil-A's side in this issue where government
officials are trying to censor the speech citizens.

Terrorism didn't work against the Brits then. We are a very

response he wanted. (Well, he would have preferred we attacked Saudi
Arabia, but Iraq was almost as desirable).

You would not believe the restrictions on speech our ostensibly "liberal
democratic" allies in western Europe maintain. When American leftists
express their deep love for Europe, it isn't just their socialized
medicine and greater overall government involvement in the economy
they're admiring - it's their aggressive suppression of free expression,
too.

The only opinion that was being suppressed was that of Don Cathy, the Chick Fil-A executive. Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day merely showed support for the company in the face of the abortive boycott. The meager counter-protests were also not suppressed in any way.

Once people start using the government to fix personal problems, they
inevitably use it as a bully bodyguard to get revenge for personal slights.

Left-wingers often cite things like police and fire services as if they
represent the same paradigm of government as social services. They're
completely different, because you put out fires to keep them from spreading
to your house - not for charity - and communities have been putting out
fires together since they existed. But using the government to chastise
people who offend you is a natural part of the paradigm in which government
is a protective parent.

Well, he didn't have the right to enter their property and then rant.
That's trespass, and he got bitch slapped for it. Good.
Freedom of speech does not mean you can violate property rights to do
it. No part of freedom of speech means forces others to listen.

# Really? You must not live here.
# There are thousands of dipshits trying to burn down his government.

The point is that Obama had (and has) the opinion that marriage is between a
man and a woman. The pro-gay libtards didn't attack him for his position.
They are too immersed in the Obama Koolaid to object.

# As a personal opinion

That never stopped libtards from attacking a conservative with the identical
personal opinion.

OK, but *I* don't give a shit about anything but the situation we were
conversing about. Dragging the topic around is fine, but it is at that
point that I don't care to continue. BTW, it works on both sides of any
issue when "followers" are involved. Romney said he was "Pro-Choice",
but you don't hear the followers bitching about that. This is not a
recent phenomenon. The whole us vs them mentality is all part of the
smoke screen so the commoners don't notice that there REALLY isn't any
difference or "change" going to happen, no matter who gets voted in.
