Since many people have posted videos of their swing, I thought I'd
jump in as well. This is with my old driver, cut a half-inch shorter
than usual.

http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~jrs39/golf/JS_Driver_FrontView.mpg

Suggestions very much appreciated. Swing speed approximately 130 mph,
although that was last year and I haven't warmed up yet.

You better warm up becuase you are bringing the average RSG swing speed
down.

Measure your swing speed again. It doesn't quite look 130mph. (Thats not a
slag, but 130 mph is a long hitter on tour)

I don't think I have the expertise to critique it, but providing a few more
angles of the swing may provide those with the expertise to offer better
advice.

Well lets put it this way. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson are around 120.

I did test it at a store, which might have bumped up the numbers to
sell clubs. I was only there to get my clubs regripped, and the
salesman was kind enough to let me use the machine for a few minutes.

I did try to take another angle but there wasn't enough light by the
time I repositioned the camera.

I'm also 6'8". The driver you see is a bit longer than standard so I
assume that increases swing speed a bit just by scale.

I think the swing looks just fine. Very solid and "textbook." You might
want to think about speeding it up a bit because it seems like you easily
could. But yes, it looks textbook. I guess that is a good thing! ;)

I'll be brutal cause I'm comparing you to pro swings I watch on TV so don't
take any of this badly. Don't even believe me either unless you can see it
yourself. You really shouldn't take any of the tips you get here seriously,
I'm just writing this for fun. See a pro for valid advice.

On address your feet could be about 6 inches further apart. Too bad you
don't have a plastic practice ball cause it also looks like you're setting
up with the ball in the middle instead of off your left heel.

I wish I had a target line view cause I suspect you're cheating a little on
your shoulder turn and your swing plane is too flat. This may be why you
lose your spine angle on your takeaway. By cheating I'm saying that your
arms are turning back more than your shoulders.

You have a hell of a good wrist lag which is where I guess you get a lot of
your swing speed.

What I find curious is that just after you hit the ball both arms fold in.
I'm guessing that if you kept your right arm straighter after you hit the
ball you'd hit with more power. If you can, take a look at VJ's swing to
see what I mean. Still this is, I think, just a symptom of a flaw that is
manifest far earlier in the swing, namely your set-up.

I think if your feet were wider you'd have a steadier base to do a better
shoulder turn. With your weight distributed wider you'll have better
balance and won't have to compensate in your swing by shifting your spine
angle left on your take away and then right on your follow thru. To sum it
up, you're making quite a few adjustments thruout your swing simply to keep
your balance that you could easily remedy by taking a wider stance.

Just for the heck of it, download Annika's swing at http://homepage.mac.com/mistretta/clarispic/Annika.mov
and do a frame by frame comparison with yours. Check out how her feet are a
shoulder's width apart. In particular note how at the top of her swing most
of her weight is on her right foot, then compare your swing at the top and
you'll see what I mean about losing your spine angle.

Note also how she turns her body thru the swing after contact as compared
with your swing where you sort of windmill your arms up after hitting the
ball. Annika may be just a girl, but IMHO she's got a near perfect swing
I'd give anything to have.

Still, not bad at all, I envy your flexibility! Good luck with it. . .

Notice that your head is coming forward (and slightly up) on the backswing.
Your weight appears to be totally on your left side at the top. Classic
reverse pivot. You want to keep the head down, and if anything, slide back
on the backswing. Notice also that at the top, your spine is tilted towards
the target, and at impact, the spine is tilted away from the target. You
need to keep the spine angle more constant throughout the swing.

There may be other problems, but you need to fix this one first.

130 mph a little optimistic I think.....but you do indeed have a 'high' cluhead speed......great
'lag' and late release!

Main problem.....shoulders too level throughout take-away and backswing leading to sideways movement
and flat swing plane...probably a few duck hooks and the occasional slice. Folding arms too much and
too early in the follow-through will keep the ball low. Shoulder action in the downswing and follow
through looks good though

Make sure left shoulder drops under chin as you rotate away from the ball...and hang on to the
stroke in the follow through, finishing nice and high....keep everything as loose as you can!

cheers

I'd agrre with this. Bad posture and pivot are creating a reverse weight
shift. Thats why your follow through has no width to it. The weight goes the
wrong way on the downswing so the arms slow down a lot. Seems you are
playing with a very cupped left wrist as well. Should be flat by impact.

Get some lessons because you have excellent potential as your backswing and
downswing show to a considerable degree.

Very quickly, I recommend leaning forward a bit at address, with a straight
back and sticking you butt out somewhat.

Extend more on the takeaway. On the downswing, don't try to hit with the arms,
use your lower body hip turn
to power the arms. There are a lot of power sources in the golf swing, but you
would do well by letting your arms be passive to the power of your lower body.
In other words, don't try to power your arms, let them be powered.

You might get TW's book and emulate his setup and backswing extension. I
predict your development will come easier for you than for many.

Although Davis Love III looks like his swing is in slow-motion, and his
clubhead speed is right there with Tiger and Phil. He can hit it much
farther than he usually does...when he wants to. If you'll recall, he was
Tiger-long before anyone ever heard of Tiger. He geared it back to gain
control.

Looks like a pretty darn good swing to me. Nice wind-up without a lot of
lower body movement to put 'slack' into your body torque. Can't tell much
more from this angle, but I like how your head stays steady and behind the
ball. Tempo is nice and smooth. Very relaxed look, almost Freddy-like.
(Not the horror movie guy, but the golf guy.) I don't see the deceleration
others have pointed to (they're wrong). Very few moving parts to go out of
sync, so I would guess your ball flight is usually fairly predictable, and
that it's just a matter of whether you make solid contact (probably a
function of your spine angle raising a bit -- that's why I'd rather see a
"down the line" camera angle). But overall, from what can be seen from this
angle, very nice.

I disagree.
On the way to the top his spine angle tilts very much toward the target. In
fact, at set up he isn't behind the ball. He's right on top of it or
slightly ahead of tha ball already. He's got no spine tilt away from the
ball. On the way to the top he reverse pivots and his entire head is ahead
of the ball.
The spine angle towards the target at the top is 'dramatic'.
On the way down he corrects, but it's a reverse pivot.
Weight shift is the wrong way. He's leaving a lot of power off the table.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I appreciate your feedback
and will take it to heart.

I agree with most people that I should seek a professional but there
aren't many in the Johnstown area, especially that I can afford. The
closest around charges 60 per hour and while that may be reasonable
compared to other pros around the country it is too expensive for me
for now. Once I save up some money I'll try and get a lesson or two.

Once the weather clears up again and there is less mud around from the
snow clearing I'll repost with two or three views as you suggested. I
don't want bother everyone here too much but I would love to hear your
feedback with a target line view and perhaps an overhead.

Thanks and happy golfing.

Are you actually hitting a golf ball in the video? Doesn't look like it
to me. Your swing like many others will vary from a practice swing with
no ball.

My swing looks like Tom Purtzer and Steve Elkington combined on a
practice swing with no ball. But with a ball, it's like Charles Barkley
in a swarm of bees.

As far as your swing, a little reverse pivot, and absolutely no
extension through impact. See your local pro!

You need to feel the shoulders turning until your shoulder is PAST

degrees. Most say 90 degrees is the absolute minimum. Your shoulders
turn only 70 degrees or so.

probably right, but people say he does. He definitely looks at the
ball over his shoulder, not off the end, which would be 90 degrees.
Phil Mickelson turns his shoulders so far that his head looks like

Good god, but you're full of it.

Just looked at Phil's swing here:

You may need to sign up with Golf Digest's "Insider" deal (free, but

perhaps just past) 90 degrees.

Again: nowhere *near* 120 degrees.

NO you are--and you just screwed that guy--and everyone else here who

purpose in my post was to help him with his golf swing, help him try
to turn more, which is always good. But, as usual, a moron chimes in

Review his swing frame by frame. His head lurches up because his
shoulder hits his chin. He continues the backswing with arms only.

FYI, I have paid more money for lessons and clinics than your house is
worth. When I tell someone something it is the consenus of every
instruction book and I have read most of them. A full shoulder turn
is the basic of basics, the fundamental of fundamentals.

Consequently of my experience, I know nearly as much about the
technical aspects as any teaching pro-- It is not that hard. As we
engineers say: "it is not rocket science." Ben Hogan said anyone can
shoot scratch with training and practice. He's right.

I can't always do it, but I know what we should be doing and I can
recognize when others are doing it wrong. I think I understand the
golf swing. I really think I will be able to do it consistently
shortly, maybe shoot scratch golf as my putting and chipping reach
that level, but pros tell me that my full swing is at that level.

Not that it matters here, but I shot 79 last Friday and 82 in a match
play tournament Saturday morning. If you feel froggy, come on out to
California. I will play you $100 a hole-- My Handicap is 11.5 now.
Going down fast, better hurry.

So when I tell someone to turn their shoulders, shut the f... up.

Wow. And you still can't play worth a damn.

But with enough lessons and clinics to more than pay for my house, you
can't.

Here's a thing: I've spent less than $200 on golf lessons, but I bet my

turn your shoulders with your arms connected to your chest--maintain

But forget it. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere for golf advice.
Use Google to search on "golf discussion" and go where you may learn

You suggested that Tiger's swing was one to emulate; I agree.

But then you suggested that that means being able to turn your shoulders
120 degrees; utter bullshit.

Straight up? I'll take some of that action. I've only spent about $500

Why so eager to play for money and with handicaps? Should be about
even chances for both players, right?

The only reason to feel so secure when playing with handicaps is to be
a bigger sandbagger than the other guy.

I doubt anyone in this group will fall for that with your track record

Here's some interesting reading on the subject from Arnold Palmer:

"We all like to hit the ball as far as we can, and the best way to hit
a
mile seems to be to take the biggest possible windup. I say "seems".
What the human urge for power often does is make us strain too hard,
take too big a backswing, lose control of the club - and dissipate
our power completely.

Each of us has his own limits. We can take the club back just so far
and no farther. For most pros the distance is considerable; many of
them have such a long backswing that the club goes up and around all
the way to the horizontal
and even past the horizontal, until it is actually dipping towards the
earth.
Only a few amateurs - the strongest of them, with muscles and joints
kept
loose through constant exercise - can hope to duplicate this kind of
swing.
Most amateurs cannot take the club back nearly so far as the
horizontal.
Many of them would play better golf if they never tried to take it
past
the perpendicular.

You've got to keep the swing compact and well within your physical
capabilities. The minute you feel that you are stretching yourself
on the backswing, the minute you feel that you are fighting the weight
of the club instead of remaining easily in control of it, you have
swung too far. And when you go too far, one of two things happens.
Either you bend your left elbow or you loosen your grip. Either way
you are lost."

[He then shows an experiment of him hitting a 5 iron with what he
calls
a full swing, 3/4 swing, and 1/2 swing. The "1/2 swing" takes the
club
about 15* past vertical, and the "full swing" is nearly parallel. He
says
he never swings harder than this with the irons. He notes that the
1/2
swing hits the ball 150 yds, and the full swing 165 (back in the day
of
balata balls).]

"What the experiment proves is that the length of the backswing makes
very little difference in distance. Enlarging the arc of my swing all
the way
from the perpendicular to the nearly horizontal - a really tremendous
difference in the length of the backswing - merely added 15 yards to
my shot. I could have accomplished the same thing by going to a
4 iron instead of a 5 iron.

The moral, of course, is that you don't have to press for that extra
couple inches in the backswing - thereby running the risk of
committing
those two fatal errors of bending the left elbow or loosening the
grip-
to get enough distance to be a good golfer. You will get more
distance,
on the average, if you don't press.

Keep that swing COMPACT. Don't let the club get away from you. The
minute
you feel you are stretching or straining on the backswing, quit trying
so hard.

This advice, I know, sounds contrary to everything that has been
written and
said about power golf in recent years [1963]; it even seems to oppose
the
way all the pros, including myself, play the game.

These contradictions, however, are only apparent, not real. All the
pros,
with very few exceptions, use the compact swing: the kind of swing
they
take is well under control and well within physical limits - for THEM.
My own swing, though it involves the big turn I spoke of and carries
the
club way back to below the horizontal at times, is a compact swing -
FOR ME.
I never feel a sense of strain at the top of my backswing. I never
let my
left elbow bend [although his arm BOWS a little]. Not since that 1958
tournament in which I failed so badly have I loosened my grip on the
club."

Translated, this means if you dare to point out any of my numerous

This is really my favorite ... if you're not wealthy and a member of a
fabulous private club, then you have no chance of playing decent golf
and your opinion is worthless.

*Classic* ... Larry's advice is the consenus (sic) of *every*

One has to be careful with this. I can turn 120° - by allowing my hips to
turn 90°. I'm pretty sure Larry doesn't advocate this.

But we're in a medium where we don't get instant feedback to see how our advice
gets taken. Communication is a two-way street and without that feedback we can
believe people are hearing one thing when they are actually hearing something
else.

So we need to clarify what we write and what we read more often than we would in
a more direct personal contact.

Though you do not appear to have a reverse weight shift, it looks like
your weight says on the left side the entire swing. How you do that
with out falling back, I'm not certain? :) I think your shoulder turn
is sufficient, perhaps your hips are blocking you from getting to the
right side, or the stance is too closed (I didn't see a golf ball to
get a reference).

IOW, your shoulder is over your left thigh at the top, I've been told
it should be over or close to the right thigh. Then again it could be
the camera angle as well.

Probably a setup adjustment from a good instructor would help, because
your form looks good.

Re: Speed: I think it's picking up your ball speed as it jumps off
the club. I had a similar reading when I was a beginner and did not
know about these kind of things. If the salesman told me clubhead
speed for the average golfer was Mach 1 and Mach 1.5 for a pro I
probably would have believed it. So no insult intended!

Sure. That's because we recognize that it's pretty silly to bet money on
whether Tiger or I am the better golfer.

Taking strokes from a higher handicap is conceding that I'm not as good of a
golfer as he is and saying "let's play anyway".

Handicap playing is useful when you want to bet with someone but don't really
care who's the better golfer. That's a friendly way to play.

But it means that poor inconsistent players such as myself do "win" competitions
with regularity.

If you're talking about playing handicap-adjusted golf, then you're talking
about playing a friendly game for the fun of it. You're not talking about
who's the better player. That's good - golf is a friendly game.

In handicap adjusted golf, how can someone be WAY over his head? Honest
handicaps make everybody pretty close to equal.

Forget it Glfnaz.

LLLarry has now established himself as THE lying troll on RSG, at the
moment (ykw might return some day). He makes bets that he reneges
on....or tries to change after the fact. He wants to play his course
and to decide who will get shots and who won't.

The bottom line is that he does all of this without even a trace of
honesty. He isn't about to show for any of the wagered events...long
drive, low score (net or gross) and particularly the event where he's
states:

>>"Truthfully, if I were to attend an RSG event, I would show up with a
>> list of their names and a printout of what they said. Then I would

Then when called on that, he says:

>>am, where I've been, what I know, or the condition I am in now. Maybe
>>I was middleweight champ someplace? I wasn't but I was Golden Gloves
>Champ about a zillion years ago, ha.

Llllllarrrrrry doesn't know any of the RSG group either, so he can
start with Sparky, Chris B., Horvath, Steve S., DPH, Dalecki, Thor,
and I don't even know the NW, St. Louis, or Cincinnatti guys (except
for Pflum, who would eat him alive). I'm sure that I've left out
several...but he'll take them on.

Lots of fun sitting in SoCal and talking big LLarry. Put your money
where your mouth is...and back it up. Otherwise, you're a classic
troll.

I think I can play below my handicap when I need to, like I did
Saturday morning in the President's Cup match play. I shot 70 net,
that is two below my handicap.

If you can shoot below your handicap under the pressure of a sizeable
bet, you would win. That is fair. Nothing else is.

I will acknowledge that you or anyone with a lower handicap than mine
is a "better golfer" than I am, of course. You seemed to want to bet
me on a golf match-- and I am willing to do that using our current
handicaps, the way the Club Championionship and every tournament in
every golf club is played. If you are better than me that day, you
will shoot under your handicap. If I can't do the same or better, you
would win. That is fair and the way golf has been played for 200
years.

Our Championship Division is played without handicaps. Always has been,
always will be.
Just as most *every* club in the world plays.
Chapionship Division is off scratch.
Flighted Divisions are with handicaps.

I haven't talked about "how good my game is." I have been brutally
honest with my scores and my handicap--and the record is publicly
available-- Someone posted my last 20 scores here a few weeks ago.

The only golfers I know of who bet without handicaps are pros--and
even then only those who consider themselves equal. Mark O'Miera
might play Tiger and beat him on a given day, but a teaching pro would
NOT bet against a touring pro without getting some strokes. They are
not stupid, and neither am I.

So what is your handicap and recent scores? What is your USGA number?
