Citing other priorities, Sorenstam to retire at end of season

Annika Sorenstam will retire after the season, ending an LPGA Tour
career in which she has won 72 tournaments to date and produced a
defining moment when she teed it up against the men on the PGA Tour.
LPGA career wins
Annika Sorenstam is third in all-time wins on the LPGA Tour (including
three wins this year) and tied for fourth in career majors. A look at the
top five on the list:

She announced her decision at a news conference Tuesday at the Sybase
Classic in Clifton, N.J., opening her remarks with a relaxed smile.
"The last time I saw this many cameras was when I was playing at The
Colonial," referring to the one occasion, in 2003, she played against
men.
"The reason for this decision is that I have other priorities in my
life," Sorenstam said. "Mike and I want to start a family ... I am very,
very proud of what I've achieved. Golf has been great to me. I've
achieved more than I thought I could. I have given it all, and it's been
fun."
Sorenstam, 37, has hinted at retirement the past several seasons, saying
she wanted to devote more time to her growing business and her personal
life. She is engaged to Mike McGee, son of former PGA Tour player Jerry
McGee, with the wedding planned for early 2009.

Holy Crap, another glaring reason why I have Sadam or Laura or whatever it's
name is in my killfile. Like Tiger Woods, I've been happy to watch who may
go down in history as the greatest female golfer out there. Perhaps she is,
perhaps she isn't. One cannot take away any of her accomplishments.

She probuly is the greatest female golfer but so what? Suppose a
league is started for one-armed blind golfers over 60 and somebody
comes along and wins 20 tournaments a year. What does that prove?
If you want to call yourself great you have to play in the big leagues
not some artificial league where the competition is much lighter.
