There was an interesting article in the most recent GolfWorld by Jamie
Diaz on a pronounced shift by the pros to using 3 woods (or metals) off
the tee. He pointed out that in winning The Players Tiger hit driver
exactly five times in 72 holes, everything else was 3, 5 wood or iron
off the tee.

I can sort of understand that for many of the pros. They are so long
and strong that their 300+ yard drives will put them in trouble whereas
a safe 280 3 fairway puts them in position A.

Since I don't hit the ball 300 that isn't really a problem for me or,
most likely, for anyone on this forum. But I do see guys I play with on
occasion leave the driver in the bag and opt for the 3. Not me. I'm a
short httter with absolute confidence in my Adams driver - it's going to
hit the ball where I'm looking.

No manufacturer that I know of is making a high tech 2 wood and I wish
they would. I did used to be able to hit my 2 further an with the same
accuracy as my driver. But the last 2 I owned was probably 20 years
ago.

You sort of can get a "high tech 2 wood" in the tour spec strong 3
woods available from several of the manufacturers. Callaway, for
example has the X-Hot 3Deep 3 wood with 13 degree loft and 43.5" shaft
length. In my book that's a 2 wood.

Most golfers could switch to a strong 3 off the tee and it would positively affect their
game. Too many time you see guys with great big drivers who consistenly hook the ball or
slice the ball off the tee. I carry a strong 3 that I use for driving when my drive isn't co-
operating. My strong 3 is almost as long and much more accurate.

There are high-lofted drivers available now which would amount to pretty
much the same thing. I know TM makes a 12.5 degree driver and Callaway's
razr is available in 13.5. Not sure about the max loft in the adjustable
drivers. I'm guessing somewhere in the same range.

For some reason I can hit my driver far better than my 3 wood.

I wonder whn some smart marketing guy is going to say something like,
"Hey, let's take the 3 off and make it a 2. We can sell a million of
them."

Funny that. For some reason I can hit my driver further than my 3
wood.

Further into the woods?

I gotta think about that, especially now winter is arriving down here
and I need carry and accuracy a bit more.

Currently I don't even have a fairway wood. I've been carrying two
drivers: my old Callaway FTiQ with a whippy R flex that goes
straightish or a bit left, and my newer Ping G20 with a tour shaft
that goes way longer but fades, occasionally getting a huge push fade
that ends up two fairways to the right. This has been fun as I can
take either the left or right side out of play, but it would be nice
to just keep the middle in play.

I wish I could "hit all the fairways" like Llarry. Probably a pipe
dream though - even the PGA tour pros can't do it!

Mickleson was messing around with a Frankenstein 3W with a driver
shaft on it before the Masters - I wonder if he persevered with that?

Who was the genius who started bending the irons a few degrees less to increase distance and
sell more clubs?

How come there weren't Gap Wedges thirty years ago?

I don't get why it isn't easier to find 2 woods.
