I started to post about Ken Venturi's death, then I decided to see how
long it would be before someone on this "GOLF" List would mention that
he had passed away. Good for you Mr. Pitts!

Didn't see this until late night news. Probably the best golf
commentator of all, and was a damned good golfer. He overcame some
serious problems resulting from a car accident, but later won the
U.S. Open. That was the last year they had 36 hole play on the last
day because he actually fainted from the heat before coming back and
winning it.

One of the really good guys. He will be missed.

Saw him on Faherty's show. He related a story that if he had actually won the Masters as an amateur, one of the Augusta National members would have set him up with a VP job in marketing at GM and he would have been made chairman of Augusta National for as long as he wanted to be chairman. The point was for him to never be a professional golfer. Like Bobby Jones.

He sounds like a great player and a real gentleman. I wish I had known
him.

I was fortunate to meet the golf legend at the Colonial in Texas many
years ago. He was a great guy and a fun guy to talk to. I'd put him in
the "Cool Old Dude" category. When I told him that I was a big fan of
Ben Hogan he even offered to make a phone call to get me on for a
round at Shady Oaks, which was Hogan's old stomping grounds.
I gave Mr. Venturi a framed print I made of Hogan's ghost putting out
on the 13th green at Augusta. He thought it was pretty cool. Now I
guess I'll have to do one of Mr. Hogan and Mr. Venturi playing
together.

R.I.P. Ken Venturi.
