I've been reading this newsgroup lately as the playoffs approach, and I've
noticed something: there are a lot of people in here who just HATE the
Cowboys. With comments like Cowbabys (which is misspelled, BTW) and Cowjokes,
etc., the anger being hurled at the 'boys is intense.
As a Cowboys fan, seeking greater peace and understanding with the rest
of the NFL's fandom, I ask you: why do you hate the Cowboys so much???
Is it Deion? Jerry Jones? Barry Switzer? Something else?
And after all, unless your team is KC, then your favorite team has a record
that is no better than the Cowboys. And the Boys beat KC, at that. Don't
you want to at least give them some credit. They are 11-4 even though they
are always going for it on 4th down and doing silly things like that.

In article <1995Dec1...@vms1.gmu.edu>,

The reason you're seeing so much of this sort of traffic is because
the Cowboys had such high (and I might add -smug) expectations of
this season that is crumbling slowly around them. As a sidebar,
I've been a constant Cowboy rag here on RSFP since Jerry Jones
fired Landry in his usual boorish manner, and hired the helmet
haired braggert Jimmie Johnson.

I hated Johnson because he was smug, and he was good.

I hated all teams that were serious threats to the Niners in their
turn.

The Cowboys are particularly galling because of the way they bring
out the worst kind of front-running in a very bandwagon prone Bay
Area. It's one thing for the Niners to win a few shows causing
a stampede by the local cognoscente, but another to suffer the
humiliation of losing to the Cowboys, then seeing a dozen brand new
Cowboy jackets in your local sports bar with guys yellin: How bout
dem Boys. It's sort of the way I used to feel about the Rams in the
60s and 70s when seemingly half the Bay Area were Dodger/Ram fans
while the Niners struggled.

It's sort of a SF Bay Area thing. This is one bay area Niner fan
perspective anyway.

don't take it personal if you're a true blue. I honestly feel bad
for the plight of some of the true blue Boys fans who are watching
things crumble and steadfastly look for hope, and positives.

The Redskin/Cowboy rivalry is a great one in sports. Every Redskin
fan has a right to go off on the Boys. The Boys haven't been very
popular in Philly or New York either, the NFC East is a tough
division. You would expect every NFC East teams' fans to dump their
chocolate confetti on the Cowboy parade at any opportunity.

The AFC has been hearing from Cowboy fans for a couple years now
about how the AFC sucks, so there won't be a lot of respect from
that Conference.

Green Bay has to hear about how the Cowboys own them after having
played them IN IRVING for seemingly the last few decades since
Jerry Kramer pushed Jethro Pugh out of the way at Lambeau.

The NFC West teams have had to hear from Boys fans about how their
division sucks and that's why the Niners win so many SBs, so
Rams/Falcons/Saints fans sortof smiled when Barry 'me-at-my-own-29'
Switzer decided that a turnover was better than giving his D a
chance.

Detroit hasn't had a lot to cheer about (until right now, that is)
so when they try to raise spirits by pointing out what a great
exciting back Sanders is, they got to argue with Boys fans about it
every time. You think they can't wait to see the Boys in the
playoffs this year?

Minnesota still reels from the Hershel Walker trade. They should
have got some of the super bowl money from 92-93.

The Bears fans are mad because they got tricked into getting
Wannstadt. (just kidding, I like Wannstadt, I think he's good coach
but couldn't resist)

I think Tampa Bay fans like the Cowboys, go figure.

Oh yeah, don't forget the "America's Team" gig, can't forget that.

go niners

Well if "hate" means "will root against at any opportunity", then yes, I hate
the Cowboys. I mean, if someone like Jerry Jones was drowning in a pool and I
had a lifesaver next to me I'd... I'd... I'd realize that it's probably in
the 49ers best interest to keep that arrogant asshole in charge of the team
and throw it to him. Of course if Troy or Emmit were drowning I'd throw it
without a second thought. So why do I hate the Cowboys?

* They are the winningest team, in my book, at least in the "modern" super
bowl era, and have beaten the 49ers many times in the NFC championship.

I was born in '58 so I could care less about what was happening much before
then so any flames about the "winningest team" part will fall on deaf ears.
But hey, call it jealousy if you will, if two teams repeatedly go after each
other year after year in big games, a strong rivalry will develop.

* Jerry Jones

Need I say more? I will anyway. If Jimmy Jones owned the 49ers, I would have
do some transcendental meditation to convince myself that the team transcends
the owner and that it would be OK to root for them. Since I don't do TA, this
would be really tough for me. I mean, the guy fired Tom Landry! EVERYBODY
loves Tom Landry! I think when the 49ers were going 2-14 I would root for the
Cowboys during the playoffs. That will never happen again.

* Jimmy Johnson

OK, so he's no longer a Cowboy (thank you, Jerry!). But back in the JJ/JJ
regime you had an arrogant asshole owner and a coach that dumped his wife for
football and encouraged fans to "knock back a few" before the game. The fact
that they then went on to beat the 49ers in that game didn't help endear me to
him either. Hey, what great role-models for my kids! Now instead of Jimmy we
have...

* Barry Switzer

Is this guy great or what? Bumps officials during NFC championship games. I
think the 4th-and-1 was a bad call and not the worst ever made in the
universe, but why split hairs? I hated this guy even before he was a cowboy,
and I can't even remember which college he was at. Oklahoma? Kansas?

* NOT Deion Sanders

I liked Deion when he was a 49er, and he won a lot of people over when we saw
that the do-rag and the rap was just part of his sthick, while on the field he
was all business. I still sort of like him, but some of his comments about
the 49ers have turned me off a little. Really, though, I think Deion is a
secret 49er agent that has made the ultimate sacrifice to leave the 49er
organization forever and infiltrate the camp of their hated rivals and suck
down all their free-agent money.

* NOT the rest of the players

Troy and Emmitt are all class in my book. I discount the Aikman tirade as
frustration at having just been sacked and losing the game. I don't hate
Charles. He's just a child at heart, as evidenced by the fact that he isn't
quite poddy-trained yet. It's just too bad for the players that they are
saddled with the current management and play in...

* Texas

which as everyone knows is just east of LA. Everyone born in northern
California is genetically wired to hate LA, especially the Rams. Over the
last several years, though, pity was most we could muster towards the LA Rams,
and now even that is gone. When you drive east of LA the next real football
team you get to is ... no, I don't think so ... um, the Cowboys! So now
Dallas is the recipient of all the sports-hate that normally was bestowed on
the Rams in addition to that you get for simply being in Texas.

And I'm sure Texans feel about Californians in the same warm, loving,
generous, I-hope-we-smear-your-butts-all-over-the-field kind of way.

Yep. Deion, Jerry, Michael, Barry, and something else. That something
else might be that John Madden fawns over this team on every broadcast or
maybe that they've beaten the Packers four times in the last two years
all in Dallas.

The more teams you beat, the more fans of those teams despise you. It
doesn't make you popular with real NFL fans. (Only Goddarned
bandwagon-jumpers).

>why do you hate the Cowboys so much???

One word. Frickin' arrogance. (That does not hold for Troy Aikman who is
impossible not to like.)

That little 3 syllable word arrogance seems to permeate from the Dallass
team, fans, and owner.

People like to hate arrogant winners and losers, and people like to give a
break to humble winners. You want humble winners and a study in contrasts,
remember the Redskins and Giants superbowl winners a few years back? Yeh,
not much swagger during the season, some swagger in the playoffs. With the
Cowpuds, you've got arrogance even during the off-season.

I don't know how many honest, calm answers you will get, but I will
try to be one of them.

I started hating the organization when they fired Tom Landry. I did not
mind the change, but the manner in which they went about it was undeserving
for all he had done for the Cowboy organization.

Since that time, they've lost a lot of the class that I once admired
about them. They are a better team, I cannot argue that, but the
arrogance of their owner is a constant annoyance to me.

It's the fans, Bill. It's the fans.

When I was 6-10 years old, I loved the Cowboys. I also loved the
Dolphins, the Redskins, the Eagles and the Chargers. Growing up,
everybody wanted to be Tony Dorsett or Rod Springs (the Cowboys 3rd and
Goal from the 1 back). We were just cruel to anyone who like teams more
than the Cowboys. Then I grew older, I, for some reason found myself
cheering for the Eagles and Dolphins giving much respect to my old loves
and the NFL itself.

But one thing remains the same. Cowboys fans still have no
respect for the other fans.

Why? The same reason 49er fans are showing less respect for the
other fans. Their team wins.

The Cowboys and the 9ers win championships. Between them they
have won the last three Super Bowls. This, unfortunately is what
determines great teams in the 90's. Who gets to wear the ring.

I simply cannot help hating the Dallas Cowboys. I was raised a cowboy
hater from very young age. I have done the same thing to my kids. IN my
house we call it "family values."

I agree because my dad raised me as a Cowboy hater, but his dad didn't
raise him that way. He learnt' this himself. How? When I asked him, he
said it is because of his experience when visiting Texas. The way he tells
it, in 1959 (and I have no reason to believe things have changed much
since in terms of fan values in Dallass based on what we see these days)
he went to the Cotton Bowl where Syracuse (Nat'l champs that year) played
Texas. He says that the Texas fans were unbelievably arrogant. SU beat
Texas that New Years day right in their own backyard, and he says the next
day, the Dallass newspaper sports headline reads "Syracuse you were good,
Texass you were great." See, no respect for the other team despite getting
beat.....sound familiar???

Now what do you think a blue collar guy from upstate New York is gonna
come away thinking after that? You got it, Dallass, Texass, and anything
close (especially the Cowboys) hater. One weekend trip to the Cotton bowl
is all it took.
