I have to think that it would be possible to vote a straight ticket, but
allow for votes outside of it. Fill in the straight ticket dot, but any
other dots supersede the straight ticket option.

As a local office holder, I want people to vote as quickly as possible
so as to prevent people having to wait in line for hours to cast their
ballot.

Interesting that almost every state that allows it is a major republican stronghold.

But Ken’s option would leave open serious issues with ballot manipulation for recounts.

The Republicans here in Michigan are the ones who want to eliminate it.

Nailed it. In NC straight ticket voting was repealed after the GOP
legislature learned the heaviest users were black. Their precincts are
already short on voting locations with long lines, this makes the lines
longer.

(The “straight party, but...” option described above is what NC had. It
seemed like good balance of interests).

LOL.

I love all the THE REPUBLICANS RUINED IT.

This is exactly the problem. We pretend that these two tribes are our only option and only one side has the perfect answers.

No, the problem is the parties need to fund and run their primaries. Not the government.

When the government funds and controls the primaries, they control legitimacy of candidates and parties.

This really has nothing to do with primaries irrespective to the title of the thread. Straight party voting is not relevant to them.

This is related to the general election.

Actually it does.

We should get states out of the recognition of party, even on the ballot.

Party only matters to the ignorant.

California already does this - except for selecting delgates for President to the party national conventions, where it makes sense to limit them to the registered voters of the party. In fact, the first year of California's "open primary" system (2000, I think), you could choose which party you wanted to vote for when you arrived at the polling place, but the Republicans forced the state to release two separate sets of votes for its primary - ones for all voters, and ones for just registered Republicans. (There is a reason for this; Republican party rules say that a Presidential primary is ignored if non-Republicans can vote in it.)

Why? Pretend I'm bernie sanders and embrace his entire set of policy proposals. Can you point to a race where I shoulda voted for the R instead of the D?

I mean, I get what you're saying - many, maybe most of us fall somewhere not straight party - fiscon, socprog, think we're waaay too politically correct, hate being told how to live my life by either sjws or religious folk, healthy respect for libertarianism and the 10th amendment - totally makes sense to follow individual candidates on either side and make informed decisions... but for folks that are generally left or generally right on most or all issues, straight ticket seems reasonable to me.

Cheers.

I find it difficult to agree with that. Or, maybe I am ignorant and
have always fooled those who matter.

rsfc has led me to believe every Democrat (except me) is a socialist.
I think they should be identified to prevent unwittingly voting for
one.

Before some liberal accuses me of whitewashing every Republican, I did
not. I want to know what they stand for even though, because of rsfc,
I will presume they are the real Americans - subject to change.

I eagerly await Democrats trespassing on my yard, ringing the bell and
asking me to vote for them.
