The former, soon to be latter

Outside. A plumber smoking in my house would be fired real fast.

Kinda what I figured. Out in the open not as bad. Not good, but not as
bad as inside. Maybe he had the gas shut off before the spot he was
working at? (I hope!)

I'm pretty sure he does, but still the confidence in that fact he is showing is impressive.

I love it.
But just because Jason Bourne can blow up a house by
disconnecting the water heater gas supply does not mean we can do
it. The stoichiometry + rate of entry + room volume + ventilation
is against it. Gas range igniters are always getting it wrong.

A guy jumps out of a plane with his parachute, counts to 5, and tugs on the ripcord. Nothing. Repeats the effort. Nothing. Falling toward earth, he spots a man coming up rapidly.
"Hey, you know anything about parachutes?"
"No, you know anything about gas stoves?"

Ever see the original The Mechanic with C Bronson? Great setup and blowup with gas stove to eliminate a target.

Yes, I saw it. Fun movie. Charles Bronson did a good job
choosing what scripts to take.

I've seen them check for leaks with a bic lighter.

Spray bottle with some dish detergent and a few drops of glycerine.
Bic lighter is by far more handy.

One story industrial building where the
plumbers left a four inch low pressure
gas supply pipe uncapped overnight.
Next morning could hardly smell the mercaptan.

To get a gas explosion requires careful engineering

OR

tens of thousands of trials.
