does hardees even still make burgers? The last time I was at a hardees, I saw a bunch of tacos and burritos on the menu...in addition to hot dogs, ham n cheese sandwiches, fried chicken(not sandwiches, like 8 piece baskets, etc)....

I like 5 Guys a lot - but I think it's their choice of toppings that makes me appreciate it more. I had In-N-Out one time when I went out west, and it was ok but I didn't understand the big deal.

More than what? More than McD's or BK? Sure. Smashburger or Red Robin? 5 Guys is way under those. It's true about the fries. But you can get the smaller burger and with or without cheese and cut down the calories.

i dont recall red robin being more expensive than 5 guys....the opposite is true I think because with red robin you get fries with the burger as a meal. yeah if you choose to sit down and eat at red robin you have to tip, but then its comparing apples to oranges.

Hardee's makes great burgers. Their (no longer available) jalapeño burger is awesomeness.

Next time you go to Hardee's order a thick burger.

I have to wonder why you're in a Hardee's if you aren't ordering a thick burger.

The only smashburgers I've eaten at are in the airport. They're okay.

Red Robin here has become craptacular primarily because of the service - which seems to be an unavoidable trend in my area - but because a $9 hamburger should be terrific and there's are merely good.

Now get off my lawn so I can grill some burgers.

The real problem with Red Robin is the noise. It's a kid-friendly place that also serves mixed drinks. So parents can get smashed while their kids run wild.

Of course to some people that may be a plus.

now do the math after the fries...you get bottomless fries with all those red robin burgers. the bacon cheeseburger at red robin is 1.70 more or so, but you get bottomless fries with that compared to(essentially bottomless) $3.69 fries at five guys = red robin much cheaper

A lot of the 10 dollar burgers(still the same price or a little cheaper than five guys) are not applicable comps because they are specialty type burgers far beyond what five guys offers.

Also consider
https://www.redrobin.com/everyday-value.html

red robin offers a lot of specials/value meals...which Ive always ordered when I go(multiple options). 6.99 for a specialty burger AND fries? Much much cheaper than five guys....which never has any specials. In fact a full 35% cheaper.

thats the essential concept that makes five guys so expensive for a burger place- NO COMBOS and everything is a la carte.

Red Robin is a tier (or two) above all these places. Those are real burgers like you might make at home and you can get a "Medium" cooked burger. I'm not crazy about their fries, but they get the job done. You can sit down and be waited on if you choose. Not wait in a line surrounded by peanuts and potato boxes. And the whole schtick with the Five Guys fries just pisses me the hell off. Yeah, fill the container, then dump 2 times more of those grease sticks in the bag. Be sure to close up the bag (even if I'm eating there) so the steam totally fucks up the fries. Of which there are way too many.

I won't weigh in directly on price comparison, but the few times I went to Five Guys I felt it was overpriced unless you gouge them on toppings. I've never felt any problem with paying what Red Robin charges.

MIA wins this one in my book.

But my all time favorite is still the one they opened in lil ol montgomery tx when I lived there. It was right on lake conroe and they had an outdoor dining area where you could look out over the lake.

In Illinois, at least, they won't do a burger less than medium well. That
means no more business from me.

Five Guys overcooks too. As do most. Red Robin used to be the one I could

So, I was down in Round Rock at lunch time and decided to try out Mooyah -- essentially another FG type burger place. The burger was excellent. The fries were average. The cost was absurd. $12.50 for cheese burger, small fry, small drink. I could have walked three minutes and gotten pretty much the same quality level at In-n-Out for half the price. (which would be my choice in the future; I can't imagine any reason I'd think it worth it to go back)

Did you finish the small fries? They're also a place that doesn't do combos and iirc, the small drink is 2.49, which saves you about 20 cents vs the large.

I usually grab just a burger to go and just drink my water. And I disagree quite a bit with the idea that their burger is roughly equivalent to anything you'd get at innout.

I threw some of the fries away. They were a tad overcooked anyway and there were a ton of them even for a small (of course, the small was $2.79). They could cut the portion on the fries (and the price) in half -- or offer a decent combo -- and it might be worth considering (at somewhere around $8-$9 maybe)

Thinking about it, I'll agree the burger is better than I-n-O, but it's not twice as good (which is where the price is)

Don't know the name Hot-n-now. Austin actually has several pretty good local places -- some of which are in the In-n-Out price point, though most are more expensive

The Log Cabin in Greenville MS sold big burgers for 10c and a Coke for
5c in the 40s. I have never eaten better and you can call me Wagon
Wheel because I have been around.

Black guys pushed carts (like baby buggies in a way) all around town
selling hot tamales that IMO are still unbeatable. We avoided the
cheaper ones that would make you meow vice burp. As I recall you could
get a half-dozen and change for a dollar.

Pre-1945 a black feller named Bailey drove a Ford delivering his
home-cooked meals. They were excellent and inexpensive.

Obviously neither technology nor socialism has improved that. Well, if
Bailey was still living he might drve a better car.

I don't eat them often, but when I do I tolerate no cold and no soggy on
my fries anywhere. They get sent back for new ones.

Hot and Now is the equivalent of a Rally's or a Checkers, i.e. basic pretty
crappy burger for cheap.

I've never been to IKEA. Do they have food?

5 Guys is great but I also like Hardee's although I haven't had one in years - none in my area.
Never had an In And Out burger - again, none in my area. But I'm going to
Vegas in a couple of weeks so I will definitely get one when I'm there.

Cook Out needs to be in this discussion.

They have a cafeteria where they serve Swedish-inspired food at pretty reasonable prices. My family isn't ever interested so I haven't tried it -- other than the cheap ice cream cones.

I used to make business visits to Detroit occasionally in the 80s -
stayed at the Renaissance. I believe that is the only place I have
ever been in MI. The Ponchatrain was an excellent place to eat and the
spinning top of the hotel, too. I enjoy prime rib even when not at
company expense.

I need to avoid burgers and fries for a while - I lost 16 pounds with
the Creeping Crud I had and I'd like to keep it off.

But, thankee fer the hints.

With this thread still going, I've thought it about some more. I like 5 Guys because I can get my burger with grilled onions, grilled green peppers and "barbecue" sauce. Also, if I go by myself, I don't get fries. If I go with my wife and child, we get one order of small fries to share between the three of us. Also, they have that cool drink machine where you can get any flavor syrup with any soda. My son loves doing peach lemonade.

If that cool machine is the one I think it is, "Coke Freestyle", just about every place that serves Coke has it now. Wendy's, Qdoba, Moe's, Zaxby's, just to name a few off the top of my head.

And they often run out of the cherry syrup. It requires employees to stay on top of it. I suspect this machine is Coke's answer to HP printers, cheap drink machine, expensive syrup packages

PLus it replaces a fountain with 7-8 spigots with one spigot. So multiple people can't fill up at once, it's single threaded.

I'm not a fan if you can tell.

Late to this thread. I was in a college joint in Gainsville. That
was the best burger ever. Inspired me to duplicate it. It's all
in the beef. Get the best. Do not go for lean as in sirloin or
tenderloin. Get prime beef. Use it fresh. Cook on an outdoor
grill. Balance thickness and heat and cooking time. When I had it
going a friend who cares particularly about food told me it was
the best ever.

I'll have to check that out. I like having food from my ethic
background. I hope it's good enough for a 240 mile round trip.
