Good article.

In summary,...

"More importantly, the Bible is a sacred text, not a Cliffs Notes for federal budgeteers. No one can deny that Scripture is replete with exhortations to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and be compassionate to the downtrodden. But those injunctions are personal, not political. If they constitute a moral mandate, it is for the action of private individuals guided by conscience, not for government programs created by the state and collectively imposed through the pains and penalties of law."

...

"By all means, study the Bible. Take its lessons to heart. Let those lessons guide how you live your life. Just don't confuse the word of God with a partisan political agenda."

Liberals think square is better than round for a wheel, too.

The prayer of worthless people is, "Thank God for liberals".

How many people did Jesus label as worthless Hugh?

None - but what made you think I am Jesus?

1.Jesus didn't involve government in his good works.
2. Jesus probably agreed with His Father about queers.

I'm glad conservatives have come to their senses and I'll no longer hear them cite biblical verses to justify wingnut policy on same-sex marriage, abortion, prayer in schools, etc etc.

well we both know that one can be completely opposed to abortion and not have that opposition based in religion or the bible at all.

It's so delicious seeing the party that based its whole reason for being on scripture-citing for a couple of decades, suddenly realize that scripture-citing isn't so great when it exposes the cafeteria nature of their biblical beliefs.

I can't think of a valid reason to object to anyone, politicians included, quoting any source of inspiration, religious or otherwise. I might laugh at the absurdity (see risfc libruls), or nod in approval, but I don't see myself signing off on a sectarian muzzle.

One of the fastest ways for a politician to get me to disregard them is
to quote Scripture or other religious philosophy. I expect to see that
in their actions rather than listen to the expression of it.

That is the thing I do not understand about the right. They are all for
doing good by the less fortunate, as long as it is a private action.

That does not seem to be a measure of "greatness."

It's pretty straightforward. While it is my belief that a portion of my time and income are to help those less fortunate, I don't presume that others should be forced to surrender their money for the same.

Additionally, I don't believe "government" can accomplish as much for individuals as other individuals can. A personal relationship with someone will lead to better outcomes than an impersonal one size fits all federal or state program.

Right. It's just the normal reaction of responsible people.

Not doing it privately is showboating and a cry for approval that is
otherwise lacking.

The government doing it it socialism.

In article <obkv0c$sra$1...@dont-email.me>,
Merchant of Venice is a must read and particularly accessible.

Portia on one of her suitors:

"God made him and therefore let him pass for a man."

Ouch!

Reading Shakespeare puts many quotations and misquotations in their context.
"To gild refined gold; to paint the lily; to throw perfume on the violet; ..."
