In all of the college preview mags i've read, they all have
Texas A&M running backs Rodney Thomas and Leeland McElroy as
the best in the country.

Quoting one magazine:"The Aggies probably have the two best
running backs in the nation in sophmore whiz Leeland McElroy
and senior workhorse Rodney Thomas."

Is there anybody out there who doesn't agree. I'd love to hear
some responses.

I think Wheatley is the best back in the country. However
Thomas and McElroy are by far the best RB tandem this year.
Just think, they were the 2 best running backs on their
team last year, and the other was a #1 draft pick this year.

We'll see how good the blocking is in front of them this year
though. I look for McElroy to eventually be a top 5 overall
pick in the NFL draft. But Wheatley, barring injury will
probably be the first player taken.

The A&M running backs aren't bad, but as usual the Nebraska Cornhuskers will have the
top running unit in the nation with a pair of sophomore running backs that will end up
as the best unit. These two guys are Lawrence Phillips (who Florida State couldn't stop
in last year's Orange Bowl) and Damon Benning, and this doesn't include about 4 more young
guys who could start for 95% of the college teams in the nation. See you in the Orange Bowl,
and the refs won't be able to take this one from us.

I think TAMU's two RB may even get the vaulted SI cover, for the special

Now that the gauntlet has been thrown down, I have a few pertinent
questions:

Which of these tandems will 1) Avoid injury
2) Stay in school,
3) Not be arrested or kicked off of the
team for 'unspecified' reasons.
and 4) Not take a summer job collecting

It's still a little questionable how these two are going to fit into
the same backfield, if they do at all. McElroy doesn't look like
much of a blocker (though I don't KNOW that he can't block). They
can still slot McElroy and do a lot of damage, but Clif Groce isn't
going to scare anybody in the backfield. Being able to have Thomas
and McElroy fresh all game long will really help the Ags in the 4th quarter,
but I'm not sure about having Thomas and McElroy in the same backfield for
extended lengths of time.

Is there somebody available to beat out Groce for fullback or
is he it (Detron (Smith?) isn't a very good answer, IMHO).

*Your* running backs suck? *OUr* running backs really suck. They
should renickname "Thunder and Lightning" (Jerald Moore and James Allen)
"Partly Cloudy and Drizzle", these sophomores couldn't find their way
our of a wet paper sack. And, yeah, sure, the other sophomore, Jeff
Frazier, is going to come back from knee surgery that sidelined him all
last season. No way. No blocking either, fullbacks Dewayne Chandler
(sr.) and Terry Collier (jr.) just aren't tough enough.

I look for the Aggies to go 11-0 and win the MNC on probation just like
OU did in 1974. Won't the networks hate that?

And who can stop the Aggies? Especially at home, why they haven't lost
to TCU at College Station in forever!

>(OK, so maybe this doesn't have much to do W/ a&m RBs, but I never could

Well then, the trick is to start a new subject :)

Darrell Wilson, RS-Freshman (Dallas Carter), looks to be the main man at the
halfback position, with Roderick Walker, SR. (Iriving Nimitz), and Anthony
Holmes, JR.(?) (San Antonio Marshall), competing for #2. Juan Kemp,
SR. (transfer from UMich) looks to be the starter at fullback, with Gerrod
Coleman, RS-Fresham (Fort Worth Wyatt(?)), at #2. William Barnes,
Freshman (Georgia Camilla (?) ), likely to challenge for playing time.

Curtis Jackson, JR., (?), has been switched to wide-receiver, and looks to
be a real find. However, the plan seems to be to redshirt him this year
so he can more fully learn the position, and also be available next year
when UT will be short on quality receivers, since our resident bad-boys
look to go pro. Besides, he would not have gotten much playing time
behind Adams and Pinkney, even as good as he appears to be.

The other player in the mix will be Wayne McGarity, Frosh (San Antonio
Clark (?) ), who is the quintessential scat-back that Mackovic claims to
have always wanted (Anthony Bookman-signed with Stanford, and Jerod
Douglass-rights purchased by Baylor:) were the prime targets). As a
consolation prize, McGarity still rushed for way over 1000 yards (I think
pretty close to 2000) his senior year HS, beat Jerod head-to-head in state
track meet (100 meters), and is reportedly more solidly built. His
quickness would have been very useful last year, esp. in one game late in
the 4th down near the goal line...

Hope this information is helpful Ken (and Doug) :)

Listen Jimmy--you heard it hear first!! Michigan WILL NOT have any ties this
year unless ND runs the clock out again!! Michigan will go without nary a
blemish on their record and will end the 1948 drought just as the NY Rangers
did in hockey.

And about the three ties from a couple of years back:

1. ND ran out the clock!
2. Moeller was right to go after the tie against Illinois. Michigan was
realistically out of the MNC race at that point so all that was left
was the Big Ten championship and the Rose Bowl.

3. The weather conditions had something to do with the tie at OSU. Good
conditions and OSU didn't stand a chance!!

And yes, ultimately all these ties would have been avoided if not for the
Pullig-like passing of Elvis Grbac. No excuses for all the Big Time choking
he did in his career!!

Anthony Holmes was OK as a freshman but didn't really do much last
season. Since Adams & Pinkney were taking spring practice off, Mackovic
moved Curtis Jackson to wide receiver. He has excellent speed and is
supposed to have done pretty well in the spring. Never mind about those
two. Darrell Wilson seems to be developing into quite a fine back. I
was at the Orange-White game and saw him make some outstanding moves. I
think he's ready to kick some ass.

I seem to remember discounting William Barnes because he hadn't made his SAT
score as of signing day. Do we know for sure that he made the grade? I hope so, because
we need a big FB bad, and he was one of the top 5 FBs in the nation coming out of HS,

I've never even heard of this guy. Why wasn't he highly touted coming out of HS like
Douglas? Obviously, Douglas was UT's preference, so what's the knock on him if he's
faster (in the 100 at least) and bigger? Not to mention, smarter, by default.

All of the Longhorn recruits have met NCAA and UT (much tougher) academic
requirements. And yes, he was considered one of the top 5 FBs or RBs
depending on the list.

He was overshadowed by Douglas (both played in San Antonio), especially
since Douglas played for a very good team (Converse Judson), and had a
tremendous game in the 5A championships. Douglas did outrush him every year
in HS (again, better supporting cast), and probably considered to have
better vision. There was no knock on McGarity (several state and national
lists), he was highly rated, Douglas just very highly (we all know the media
can only focus on one or two things at a time, and there are some regional
politics involved in selections to blue-chip lists). Douglas was UT's and
BU's first choice, and McGarity was each teams second choice. Of course,
track speed and football speed are not the same thing, but McGarity will not
have to try and perform under the scrutiny or pressure that Douglas is going
to face, nor is he going to be expected to carry the load for the UT offense
that Douglas is going to have to carry for the Baylor offense. Time will
tell who will actually be the better college back. The cubbard at Texas is
not as bare as has been made out, just unproven...

I haven't seen anything say he has made his test scores, but haven't
seen anything negative since April. A recent article in the Statesman seemed
to imply that he would be in the mix. (fingers crossed)
If he doesn't make it to UT, this would be the third big-time RB recruit in the
last 5 years to sign and not make his grades (James Thornton from McKinney in
1991 and Shon Mitchell from LBJ last year, both #1 RB in Texas by AAS and DaMN).

McGarity didn't get the raves 'cuz he didn't get the carries. Realisticly he
should be good, but his durability will be questioned. The reason Douglas
is so highly touted is because of his blazing speed, open-field moves, and
incredible field vision (biggest asset). Don't know much about McGarity except
his speed and size.

See my posts "Univ. of Texas RB's" and "Re: Univ. of Texas RB's.":)

At this point noone can say definitively that they "suck gratuitously," but
what can be said is that there is a lot of potential at the position.
Couple that with a *very* good O-line, QB, and WR's (with a year+ under
their belts), and the opportunities for the 'Horn's RB's look very good.

I will go out on a limb and say that UT's rushing totals should be 150% of
what they were last year (barring injuries to RB's or the O-line). In
addition, along with learning to take the strong wind to start the game,
Mackovic will learn to scrap the slow-developers against bowl-potential
teams. That in itself will immensely help the running game!

No coach is ever right to go for a tie. Only a milk-toast scum sucking
Lily-livered coward would play for a tie. They should run any coward
Tie-sucking coach out of town, after they tar and feather him. I will
never respect a coach that tied, as the clock runs out.

I have never like Tom Osborns run offense styler. In 1983 he lost the NC
just becasue he went for the two-point play instead of kicking the extra
point that would have giving him the tie and the NC. Tom Osborn earned my
respect.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

The funny thing is that their BEST back is not even one of the two you
mentioned (that would be sophomore Carl McCullough). Not to minimize what
Moss and Fletcher did (Moss is a real banger, and Fletcher makes these
amazing escapes), but I think their numbers had a lot to do with the
offensive line, so I'd be a bit hesitant with this "best back" thing. I
think that Michigan has better talent at running back, so Wisconsin isn't
even the best in the Big 10. Wisconsin's OL might be better, though, and
that could make the difference.

UH.........as the post says, there are folks who went to tu for 4-5 years
who NEVER witnessd a win against the Aggies. That all I said.

By your sig, you are excluded. You did watch your team win in '90 and go on

Translation for all non-CT's: sergebutt = junior

When I went to A&M I saw three victories in seven seasons over tu and
that was considered a monumental achievement:

1975 - 20-10 and it wasn't even that close, only tu TD was a punt
return. Other than that I don't think they got past the twenty.
Bubba Bean had a great day as RB.

1976 - don't remember this too well. It was in Austin and A&M won
something like 30-13. Could be (and probably am) wrong on
that score. Thumped 'em good though.

1979 - tu comes to College Station ranked #4 and the Aggies gig 'em
good, 13-6. Curtis Dickey throws a half-back option pass
about 15 yds for the decisive points, A&M defense stuffs the
t-sips good. My last game as a student and my most memorable.

Now to even things out here are some of my less pleasant memories:

1974 - A&M is 8-2, needing a win in Austin to go to the Cotton Bowl.
It is raining and unbelievably cold. With 55 seconds gone in the
game, tu is ahead 17-0. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, 17 points in 55
seconds. Take away those points and it was a close game but...

1977 (I think) - tu is ranked high (#1 perhaps) and Earl Campbell is
rolling for his Heisman Trophy. Don't remember the score, don't want
to. All I remember is Earl running and catching passes and just have
a jolly good ol' time.

You young whipper snappers at A&M don't know how good you have it.

Sorry - that cheese is just a bit too moldy for me. I'm surprised you
used such lame bait, Goober, but then again, maybe it is to be expected
with all the goober crops in danger from this flood.

Which is...? Oh, I know...the winning team can't taunt the losing team,
even if they'd been taunting the winning team for at least a week.

Hey, Miami fans...can you fill some of the off-season with your
recollections of that week before, and the game itself?

James - Miami vs. t.u....I root for Miami like a Stork!

Just go the the library the Dallas newspaper the day of the game had 3 to 5
different stories about the New Attitude Longhorns taunting the Canes all
week. The newspaper even when so far as putting a angel's Halo picture
over the Hurricanes helmet.

The next year the NCAA used the first 10 film clips from the 90 Cotton Bowl
as a description of what is illegal taunting. Every team in NCAA had to
see this new NCAA rules film on illegal taunting. Miami called the NCAA film,
the Cane's Highlight film.

Past the twenty?! That was one heck of a field goal then! Don't tell
me.... Mr. Glorious, Russell Erxlebenolethotep was on the field.
Anyone else think they should have cast Erxlebenolethotep as Ray Finkle
in _Ace Ventura_?

Awww, the good ole '70s. Back when UT was whupping A&M, Miami sucked,
Florida sucked, Skynyrd ruled, LSU was always bowl-bound but still knew
how to get waxed by Bama year in and year out. Now everything's gone
to pot.
