The mathematics from Greece was the best we had until
the middle ages, and it is great stuff. The Hindus were
doing good things before the middle ages. Europeans got
little of Hindu mathematics, except for zero; but that
little addition jump started mathematical research. For
one reason or another, because they did not understand
Hindu mathematics, or because it was not imported,
Europeans worked out much Hindu mathematics independently.
Brahmagupta (598-668) was huge. He practically invented zero.
