depends on the time frame. for the 2000s? with 1 title, 4 final 4s,

kansas, kentcuky, duke, and unc are the four premiere programs in
college basketball.

Programs like ucla have won more historically by most metrics, but due
to other factors they have to be thrown behind them.

Then after that you have a big group of teams(Michigan State, Indiana,
Syracuse, Uconn, etc) that are in that second level behind those
5......

yeah I was debating that......

the problem with indiana though, is that while the passion and fan
base and everything are still there, the recent results.....well, they
just arent there.

And I don't mean recent as in "last 5 years ago"....I mean like in the
last 15 years they just haven't been very good. You have to be better
than that over a decade and a half or two decades to be grouped with
kansas, kentucky, duke, unc...all of which have had multiple GREAT(not
just really good) teams over that stretch.....how many times has
indiana even been a #1 seed the last TWENTY years? Now ask the same
thing about kansas, kentucky, duke, and unc?

exactly my point....when you have to bring up A SINGLE title game
appearance(and they only got there because their draw was favorable
and upsets happened as they werent even a top seed) over a period of
20+ years, thats an admission they haven't been very good.

let's look at their seeding history over the last twenty(just to pick
a nice big cutoff) years:

8, 2, 2, 1, 5, 9, 6, 8, 7, 6, 6, 4, 5, 7, unseeded, unseeded, 6, 7, 8,
unseeded, unseeded

You have 3 darn good years(all almost twenty years ago), then the 02
season where they were a 5 but were forunate enough to play a 10
seeded(or 7?) team to make the final four and get beat in the title
game(their only title game appearance since 1987), 4 atrocious years,
and then a bunch of mediocre years where they were good enough to make
the tournament but never really any threat....

Nothing against indiana, and I hate using recent history as a
barometer for where a program stands, but we aren't talking recent
history here.......

I agree with all those, except UNC, ky, Duke, and and Kansas have *it
all*. There are no weaknesses(such as facilities, fan support,
winning over the last ten to twenty years on top of all that history,
etc).....

with UCLA, you do have some fan support issues at times in that they
don't have the same kind of support(especially when they arent very
good) that the other 4 have.

And with indiana, well you've just the problem of them just not being
very good the last two decades.

Sorry, but no... this is insane.

There are about 200 schools who would trade two decades of utter failure for
one title game appearance in year 21.

so is fog allen fieldhouse; kentucky fans are notoriously insanely
into it; cameron speaks for itself obviously; as does unc.

So all 4 of the above places you could easily say "It's kentucky/
kansas/unc/duke for god's sake".....

the difference between those 4 and indiana is that they've been very
very good for much of the last two decades and indiana has rarely been
very good.

Indiana is a legendary program, amongst the elite of the elite. But
so are the others, and the others have just been better. Not
"lately", but over the last two decades.

You never know. I think it's extra important now that Allen and Roe
play 100% on Friday.

And Tragic Johnson is a bad ass.

I saw MSU beat Northern Iowa before bowing out to Ohio State in the E8.

After last year's run to the final game, I find it pretty hard to
argue otherwise. He seems to put it in a different gear when the
tournament comes along...and it is opening up for him nicely this
year. Northern Iowa will be a test, but I'm sure they'd rather play
them than Kansas. Ohio State beat them earlier this year, but that's
a team they know real well.

UCLA has been to the Final Four 4 times in that stretch, including 3

In context, it's not. The basic question is how to rank the programs
since Izzo became coach at Michigan State. He became coach for the
'95-'96 season, and while Indiana is better than the average D1 school
in basketball, they are probably only around average if you limit it
to BCS conferences. If youre talking top 5 since the start of
'95-'96, Indiana wouldn't be on the list. If I were to do a top 5
from that time, my list would contain Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky,
Kansas, and Connecticut. Michigan State would probably be next.
