After clicking send on that last post, that thought occurred to me as well.
I remember reading that it's estimated that only 10% of people who have
internet access use USENET. It would seem that when web access to the
groups are denied, it gets pretty quiet everywhere.
Perhaps someone (not named Frisbee) could set up a web page telling noobs
how to set up noose grope access, or maybe at least point to somewhere that
already does.
It's not rocket surgery after all.

See, here's the thing. I used to use a newsreader, then (as you say)
my employer (campus) cut off access. My home ISP has kind of sucky
newsgroup access. So I may as well switch over to google groups, as
crappy as they are.
When google cuts out, big deal. It's not like I miss much being off of
rsfc for a day. Basically I miss:
- everyone butt-sniffing mianderson's trolling
- a bazillion cut-n-pastes from 'winger blogs
- jaros' LOLs
forgive me for not bothering to set up better newsgroup service so
that I can see that.
if you all would be funnier, maybe i'd rethink this strategy.

Exzactly...I used to use a newsreader when I was on dial-up...years
back when I switched to Roadrunner rsfc was no longer really worth it
just to set up a new newsreader. Oh NOEZ GOOGLE GROOPS DIED

I'm in nearly the same boat as Mihos. My work/campus stopped Usenet service
years ago, and now my home ISP is about to dump it as well. I'll still be
able to read RSFC through any number of free news servers, but heaven knows
how I'll be able to post. (Which, of course, would make me wonder what the
point of reading would be...)
I've only ever used Google groups for searching, and their searcher has been
borked for ages. Does posting though Google work any better?

Most people I talk to that have internet access
don't have any knowledge of newsgroups.

I basically read one newsgroup....rsfc. I have no desire to download
and configure a newsreader when I have a simple bookmark on my browser
that calls it up pretty much instantly. Outside of the occasional
delays, there really isn't much of an issue. It's easy to read and to
post.

IAWTP. I was using newsreaders and newservers for years, but most of
usenet has withered away except for a few newsgroups, my firewalls at
work don't let me in, and yeah, I know there are free servers out
there but when I've tried them in the past they've been no better than
google and I have to keep changing as one goes tits up or decides to
start charging.
Plus with google I don't have locally stored state files so I can pick
up where I left off on usenet no matter which computer I am using --
this a a big advantage lots of you are overlooking.
Google is the easiest, simplest way to use usenet like I want to use
it, and I'm not going to make it less convenient on myself just
satisfy some OLD SKOOL USENET snobbery.

Only problem with aioe.org is it's a troll haven (similar to Google)
and most of us with newsreaders have the aioe.org plonked
