Have you been to an animal shelter or visited any shelter web sites of
late? The PitBull-ification of the American dog population is the
suck.

Indeed. Some time ago we were seriously considering getting a dog and
in checking the local animal shelters / Humane Society etc., about 80%
of all the dogs were Pit Bulls. Seems like people get them and have no
idea of how to train them and wind up leaving them at a shelter.

I'm so hip I have trouble seeing over my pelvis.
I'm so cool you can keep a side of meat in me for months.

Pit bulls (and associated mongrel breeds) should be outlawed.
Cue BonesMen.

<insert witty or profound quote here>
If we outlaw Bull Terriers, and associated mixed breeds, only
criminals like Michael Vick will have them.
More owners should be spayed and neutered.

I'm not going to go that far, but they are so rsfcing ugly they are
polluting decent breeds.
For example, here are a few photos from the shelter by my office:

I like they call them "Labradors." Yea...right.

I dont think they should be outlawed beyond local ordinances. I DO
think that the owners should bear the civil AND criminal liability for
any of their deeds.
My little terrier http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/norfolkterrier.htm was
bred as a hunter of small vermin and other burrowing animals. She's a
sweet little dog, but she will chew through a wall if there is a rat
hiding inside it. My Samoyed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samoyed_(dog)
is great with children and very friendly, but he took nearly two years
to leash train properly because he was bred to pull a sled. Pit Bulls
were bred to fight and kill, and the strongest biting breeds were
added to his lineage when he was developed. Since he was bred as a
fighter, only the most aggressive dogs were allowed to breed--the
friendlier dogs were culled. While responsible breeders have tried to
reintroduce friendliness to the breed, if something sets one off you
have the double whammy of aggressiveness and bite strength. If my
terrier were to nip a child (which would only happen in a very extreme
situation) there would be a little scrape and a band-aid. If a Pit
Bull bites a child it can be maimed for life, or worse.
While I have met my share of friendly Pit Bulls, the breed is an
accident waiting to happen.
While I dont disagree, we DO live in America. If they would start
holding folks criminally liable for these dogs' deeds, and some rednex
spent a few years in jail, things would change.
Also, I would never allow vicious dogs to live near my kids. If they
go loose or had the possibility of being loose, they eat a bad peice
of meat in the night or be exposed to lead poisoning.
