Something I just learned, the turret tops of the Pearl Harbor
battleships were not painted gray, rather they were painted bright
red, blue, yellow, black, and white in a combination that identified
the ship for spotter aircraft. I guess since the footage back then
was black/white, it was mostly lost to history. Obviously this
practice was short lived since it compromised ship positions and IDs
to the enemy.
