Are they coaching these kids in what to say when they leave??
On the blogs and forums I've been following this, so when I heard it
wasn't unexpected....
that said, this is richrod's "year". We expect big things. This
isn't purdue or texastech or southcarolina or arizonastate or somesuch
nonsense. This is freaking michigan.
We've got an embaressingly easy schedule and this is year#2(after a
disaster of a year#1). I'm not looking for improvement....I and other
UM fans are looking for UM quality football.
If he doesnt produce that, we'll have to find someone else who can.
I think it's "embaressing" a Michigan fan can't spell.
I think you've "we'd" both uga and michigan in one day. There's rules
against that.
whatever dipshit...where are those rules?

2.3 Rules pertaining to sports team affiliations
2.3.1 College Teams. Affiliations with individual college teams are not
inborn. Generally a sensitizing event will occur that initiates perception
of college sports, and this event need not to align your interests with your
father's.
2.3.1.1 Initial affection can occur only to one team and can be for any
reason.
2.3.1.2 Once affilitated to a team, alterations of affections can occur for
only the following reasons:
2.3.1.2a Initial affiliation occurred prior to age of consent. Age of
consent varies by juristiction, but can be no later than the 18th birthday.
2.3.1.2b Subsequent to initial affiliation but following age of consent, the
following reasons are justified:
2.3.1.2b(a) Alteration of geographical conditions combined with a temporal
gap of greater than 10 years permits one to add a second team. However,
under no circumstances can you cheer for this second team over the first.
2.3.1.2b(b) Matriculation at an institution other than the institution of
initial affective affiliation. This allows you to add a second or additional
team to your list of "teams", but only on condition you attended with
college or university. In the event of two affiliated meeting for athletic
contests, use your best judgement.
oh well, Im breaking the rules....guess Im a rebel.

Did you read the article? - the gist was "kid's a lying liar, was gonna
be academically ineligible to play, tried to put a different spin on his
transfer".
In fact, let me enlighten:
Wermers academically ineligible before transfer
July 20, 2009 2:11 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg
There are two lessons to be learned when dealing with transfers,
especially those from high-profile programs.
1. Don't always believe what the player says.
2. Those who transfer quietly are often better off than those who don't.
Former Michigan offensive lineman Kurt Wermers wanted you to think that
problems with Rich Rodriguez and Wolverines assistant coaches led to his
transfer to Ball State. He told The Times of Northwest Indiana that
Michigan's coaches recruited players who were "not my kind of crowd." He
echoed former Wolverines offensive lineman Justin Boren in describing
how a family atmosphere under previous head coach Lloyd Carr had turned
into a strictly business mood under RichRod.
Turns out, the only business that mattered was of the academic variety,
and that's where Wermers fell short. Sources told ESPN.com that Wermers
was academically ineligible and unable to suit up for Michigan this
fall. Whether he liked the coaching staff or not, he wouldn't be playing
for the maize and blue.
Rodriguez and his staff have taken heat for player departures in the
last year, and Boren's comments about eroding family values got a lot of
traction in the national media. Whether or not it was his intent,
Wermers added fuel to the fire with very similar comments. But in the
end, he's the one who ends up getting burned.
From:
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/bigten/0-3-681/Wermers-academically-ineligible-before-transfer.html
And the writer, by the way, has a strong, discernible anti-Michigan bias.
Can I ask a question, though - when WVU finishes their inevitable
nosedive back into the depths of obscurity and irrelevancy, whilst thou
still darken the RSFC corridors?
And one other thing - nice uniforms, imitator. Throw some wings on your
helmets, and you too can be like ten thousand high school/juco/div II
wannabe teams.
Cheers.

Doesn't really matter. The furor in the Michigan program, regardless of the
specifics, is unprecedented.

That should be "willst thou." "Whilst" means "while."
And of course. I was here in the dark times of the End Days of Don Nehlen,
so I won't be going anywhere, regardless of WVU's fortunes.

Take it up with Don Nehlen, who put in the maize and blue unis way back in
1980 when he started. He was a Bo protige, don't you know?
we're pissed yes......but I dont know why you guys would feel any
better when and if we shitcan richrod.
Because if we fire him after this year, we're still michigan and you
are still west virginia. We still play in the bighouse. We are still
one of the top programs in one of the elite conferences in the
country.
And you guys will still have an incredible loser as head coach and
will still play in the bigleast.
What furor is that?
Are you talking about the unprecedented turnout for the UM spring game?
Yeah, that *was* t00t sweet!!@!
If you're just talking about all the attention and press - fail - it's
completely precedented. Been going on for over a century, now. Here,
this might help explain it for ya:
1 Michigan 0.73982 872 295 36
...
24 West Virginia 0.59751 673 446 45
Cheers.
PS: The honest injun in me has to admit that some of that furor has to
do with the horrible performances we rolled out week after week last
year - but, I'll just mention what I tell my other UM friends - don't
forget that the furor started a year before RichRod coached his first
game here, when we lost to Appy State (I still find it puzzling that we
could lose to Appy State that year, get blown out by Oregon, finish the
year with two straight losses including Yet Another Loss to OSU, and
*still* go on to beat the mighty mighty Gators (led down the field by
the second coming of Christ himself, Hypesman Winner Tim Tebow) in the
CapOne Bowl - strange game, football). And, in retrospect, it should
have been pretty obvious we were gonna have a tough year - we just
didn't have the right players for RichRod's system. Period. I expect
things to turn around pretty good this year, though. Tate Forcier
looked pretty damn good in the spring game.
Also, uh, West Virginia ranks higher than I thought they would,
all-time. 24 isn't bad at all - pretty high quality programs ahead of
you on that list.
Our "incredible loser" head coach took an 11-2 team and managed a 9-4
season and bowl win with an entirely new coaching staff.
UM's "up-and-coming" head coach took a 9-4 team that beat Teh Tebow! in a
bowl and managed a 3-8 season and the worst loss EVAR to tOSU.
I'll take our coach.
I think UM is the winningest all-time program. WVU is the winningest all-
time program to have never won an MNC.
I got nothing against UM. I always rooted for them against tOSU and pretty
much in any bowl game. I just despise DickRod for his shabby treatment of
WVU and the fans, and will hope he loses every game while at UM.
As soon as he's gone and suffering for his sins I will revert to the norm.
The "U" is no longer pull worthy?
How "pissed" could you be a) knowing that there would be transition,
and b) when you spread your "fandom" across multiple schools, and c)
you don't bet on them? Actually, they should be pissed at you if you
bet on them.
> but I dont know why you guys would feel any
> better when and if we shitcan richrod.

Quite frankly, I'd rather see UM uphold their status than allow it to
be wrecked by a guy such as RR.
> Because if we fire him after this year, we're still michigan and you

We have more BCS wins than UM without near the resources.

Our "loser" head coach brought better recruiting classes to WVU in the
past two years than RR ever did, he's instilled discipline in the
program, he's increased the local enthusiasm in the program and I'm
glad he's there. And I'm glad that I learned what I did about
Rodriguez through the depositions. Personality-wise, he seems to be a
good fit for a future SEC position.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll bet he does a lot of pulling. Just like most wannabe Wolverines.
Rodriguez may not work out at Michigan, but Bill Stewart is a clueless
dolt. Time will tell.
4 losses against *that* schedule is pretty embaressing.....you dropped
two games ooc to crappy teams, and then two more in conference. Cant
as for the "new coaching staff", I thought all these fabulous
tebow sucks....(well he doesnt suck, but he's insanely overrated)
welcome to rsfc....you may have noticed this is true for most
You're right, he didn't lose to those teams ... he pretty much pounded
OU.
not in the 9-4 season(the one I responded to shrumpf about) he
didn't......
Just because Michigan beat a bunch of high schools in the 1800s
doesn't make them d0m1nat3 today.
Firstly, I just gotta throw a little ol RUTSIE marker on this bad
Second, per 2.3.1.b(a); what about marriage, or whom you happen to be
riding that season/year? Are you allowed to cheer for them? What if
the person you've married/are riding is a hard core fan of their team,
and to have you not cheering for them (or worse, cheering *against*
them) would condemn you to the sofa/and cut off from riding?
Duke and UNC fans marrying has been documented. It does not,
surprising enough, disturb the space-time fabric enough to alter
the local weather. I know not how they manage this spectacular
feat of overlooking something so important. I guess, deep down,
sex is more important that sports. I'd rather have both myself,
but I guess if I had to choose...
Last year was a chaotic year for the program, it happens to all
programs at some point. They are getting back on track.
getting back on track by taking a huge step backwards?
Keep in mind that 9-4 last year(a tire bowl victory...wooohooo!) was
like about a 7-6 with a real schedule....
oh, and they lost pat white, who(at least according to bigleast types)
was superduper great......
your head coach is a retard. that is well documented. In two of the
losses(the only 2 wvu games I watched part of, the colorado and ecu
games), he looked more clueless than a 7 year old kid with
autism.....just staring straight ahead, his players wondering wtf is
going on...he had the art shell face in full mode......
The record was 9-4.
> oh, and they lost pat white, who(at least according to bigleast types)
Pat White broke records, is one of a few who have 2 BCS bowl wins and
had 4 bowl victories in his career. He had a pretty damn good career.
> your head coach is a retard. that is well documented.
He's assembled a pretty good staff, brought in 2 of the best
recruiting classes ever (including the Florida 6A player of the year),
instilled discipline back in the program, has increased the program's
image and perspective around the state and nationally, has helped
increase fundraising for the program and is trying to raise the bar in
OOC scheduling (having added LSU recently for a home and home). Not a
bad year.
The extremely young defense, especially early on, could not get off
the field and many times, everyone was waiting for PW to bail them
out. This year should be much better.
so by going to a bcs bowl under richrod to a tire bowl under steward,
that increased the programs image nationally? Interesting......
well, pat white isn't going to be there to bail them out next
year....and hell even with the great pat white under steward they
still lost 4 games to sucky teams....
richrod left, stewart came in, donations went up.
If you cannot read, then I'm not going to try to explain it to you
again.
which of the above isnt correct?
Under white and richrod(with all these crappy assistants richrod
apparently had) they went to a bcs bowl.
Under white and steward(with the new and improved assistants) they
went to some worthless tire bowl nobody outside of west virginia even
knew took place.....
you figure it out.
You can always fake a cheer.
Mookie
> Just because Michigan beat a bunch of high schools in the 1800s
> doesn't make them d0m1nat3 today.
Well, they clearly aren't d0m1nat3 today. But I would mention that
overall win percentage is weighted toward the modern era, for obvious
reasons (ongoing increase in # of games played per season).
In the 90s, for instance, Michigan won 93 games - 9.3 wins per season.
Not bad - in fact, pretty freakin' good. At best, I imagine only a
handful of teams did better. Some that may have, and come to mind -
like FSU, I suppose - did so playing piss poor competition in-conference
(man, now I'm getting all worked up remembering seeing those guys play
Wake Forest, Duke, UConn, and the rest of those basketball schools year
after year).
In the 9 seasons of the oughties, Michigan has only won 76 games - 8.4
wins per season. Still not bad, although I imagine it's a much bigger
"handful of teams" that have done better.
Michigan's overall #1 in terms of win percentage and total wins has more
to do with being pretty damn good year after year than anything else -
we've rarely reached the pinnacle in the modern era (MNCs), but we're
generally in the picture, and have almost always been a top-25, even
top-10 team.
That's why last season has all the old-timers so askeered - there are a
lot of folks that have been fans for decades and just never imagined a
3-win season was possible. I'm more than willing to deal with that, if
the rebuild results in (a) winning consistently against tOSU, and (b) a
couple BCS national championship games.
I mean, it's not like I have any recourse if that doesn't happen - I'll
still cheer for the maize-and-blue, regardless - so I guess the "I'm
more than willing" statement is a bit empty.
Cheers.
Who said he had crappy assistants? Regardless, they're pretty much
all at UM now anyway.
> Under white and steward (with the new and improved assistants) they
> went to some worthless tire bowl nobody outside of west virginia even
You don't watch much football, do you? RichRod wasn't going to win
with that defense either. Not only was he not going to win with that
defense, his penchant to not adjust to the defensive schemes against
stacked lines was being noticed by all of our opponents by then.
And that tire bowl, with the more pro-like offense that we ran and the
passing game, basically sealed the deal for some of our highest-rated
recruits on offense.
his defense was sucky and undermanned the year before, and he took
them to a bcs bowl.....so.....
I really don't think there was anyway a *really crappy* cincinatti team
(I mean hell the only decent opponent they played all year, OU, just
took them to the woodshed) would have snagged that bcs bid had richrod
been there at wvu.
>
> And that tire bowl, with the more pro-like offense that we ran and the
ummm ok whatever, but why did it take the idot till the 13th game to
install such an offense?
> Our "loser" head coach brought better recruiting classes to WVU in the
Sorry, but no. The average WVU fan's attitude toward Rodriguez could be
the very definition of sour grapes. You lot wanted him desperately and
defended him to the death until you couldn't have him anymore. All the
hand-waving after the fact is just plain dishonest rationalization.
Oh, and he's not fishing... he's trolling, making a deliberate attempt
If you're really so obtuse as to fail to comprehend the negative
consequences of Anderson's relentless trolling, that's your issue,
Brown, not mine. Think hard about it for a second, or find someone with
more patience than I've got and more sense than you've got to explain it
surrounded by such people.
slick, you're are so damn annoying........
Mmmm... Look at it this way: you love your wife and you defend her against
people who talk about her and put her down. Then you find out that all the
rumors are true and she's betrayed you.
Is it sour grapes that once you realize what a bad person she is you are
angry and see her for what she really is?
I can't buy that. During RR's big three years he had White, Slaton and
Schmitt, the core of his running attack, and just enough decent WRs to
occasionally threaten to throw long. When RR left, so did Slaton and
Schmitt, which left White alone in a new-look offense being asked to throw
downfield more than ever, and with a first-time OC who wanted to "tweak"
the offense but couldn't decide what he really wanted to do until the bowl
game.
OTHO, Stewart has put together a first-rate set of assistants and back-to-
back excellent recruiting classes. If he does fail I'll agree he's
clueless, but he's done nothing to this point to indicate it.
You don't seem to grasp the essentials of my scenario: in that case it would
wtf is this schmitt character? Last I checked, he was a servicable
blindfinded. Basically, when you are citing owen freaking schmitt as
Deer idot: the fact that he took a step up in his career doesn't make
him a bad guy, WVU whining notwithstanding.
Dude, this was bait for Borgman, not you!
Leaving aside any WVU content, the selective leaking of the kid being
academically ineligible without any other evidence does NOT mean the
kid flunked out or didn't make good grades. There is a NCAA academic
progress rule or somesuch that says you need to have 24 credits a year
to continue playing. It is common for football players to take less
than 12 credits in the fall as they are dog tired. They then make this
up in the spring/summer terms. It was reasonable for Wermers to take a
lighter load in the fall, and a "regular" load in the winter, Since he
bailed on the Wolverine program at the end of classes in April, he
could have a high GPA and still not be eligible at U of M because he
did not go spring/summer there. That seems to be the case on what is
floating around. I don't think that this leak was from a quoteable
Wolverine source. Otherwise the first question - if it could even be
answered under privacy rules, would be, Is this a lack of Academic
Progress ruling?
> Dude, this was bait for Borgman, not you!
You try to have it both ways more than a pornstar working overtime,
dood.
You obviously don't know the specifics of how he left, and I'm not going to
bother trying to catch you up on two years of the details of them. Presume
that I, as a WVU fan, know more about how and why DickRod left the program
than you do, and sign off.
Quit while you're behind, Mike. Owen Schmitt was the consummate short-
yardage guy, and had speed as well. He broke a 51-yard run against UGa,
opened the Gator Bowl with another 50-yard run and scored the TD two plays
later, and had a 53-yard TD run against OU in the Fiesta.
Talent like that doesn't come along every year.
Only if you ignore everything I said about last season.
in such an offense, sometimes the fullback is going to be *wide
open*........he breaks through a four gallon hole and might not get
caught....it hardly speaks to the quality of schmitt.....
he was servicable...he'll probably stick around in the nfl a couple of
years....but thats about it.
What he does in the pros is irrelevent to what he did in college. He was
a highly respected FB there.
This from the guy who bends over backwards to explain away SEC champ UGa's
loss to WVU in the Sugar Bowl as "they really weren't all that good that
year." --
I know of numerous paranoid WVUhomer fantasies about it, up to and
including the absurdly stupid idea that he deliberately threw the game
against Pittsburgh. I know that you've gone quite far down the hint
trail to suggest that you lend many of these absurdly stupid and
paranoid theories plenty of credence. You have no credibility here.
My credibility on matters WVU is certainly better than yours -- but
regardless, anyone can look up the email trail and depositions about what
happened and when, and who spoke to whom and about what, and see that DickRod
did not leave under honorable conditions. That is why WVU fans are still
angry about it.
I've said numerous times that if he'd manned up and said he was leaving to
take the UM job because it was just too good to pass up, I'd have had little
problem with it. Disappointment yes; but not a feeling of being lied to and
betrayed, which is what he did with his "I'll be here as long as they'll have
me" and then gone routine.
You're arguing that that is not true? How so? We've never had as
many higher-rated players (which is 3/4 stars for us) than we have the
past couple of years since RR left.
Maybe for the average fan, that is so. I haven't met one. I admit,
when he first left, I didn't want to see him go. I thought they had a
great shot the next year with Slaton and Reynaud coming back (along
with White, etc.) and a favorable schedule that included Auburn. Of
course, Slaton and Reynaud went pro and Auburn tanked, but that's
beside the point. As for RR, once it was made public that he was
shopping himself around the country like to every school who had an
opening, hey, don't let the door hit you on the ass, buddy. If you
don't want to be there and it's such a burden to you, go. He didn't
need to lie and create stories to try to gain sympathy.
I like Kyle; he's normal. Borgman is not normal.
HTH.
Coming to rsfc and looking for normal is like
traveling to Lawrence and looking for leftovers.
cb
I was told on another board that the U of M players have to take 12
credits a semester, so it looks like I was wrong. It is looking like
the kid might have blown off school or just didn't do well in class.
That doesn't change that DickRod, while having success as a coach
previous to the Big Ten, still seems like a #$%$#%.
Not at all what I'm referring to, but interesting, I guess.
Being normal is not something of which to be proud.
But your objectivity is nonexistent - much like I wouldn't bother asking
the jilted spouse (cheating ex or non-cheating ex) whether their ex was
a "good person".
Might as well ask a Florida alum if Urban Meyer is a shady individual -
to almost any objective person, of course, he is - but I doubt you'd
find too many Florida folk who'd admit as much.
Let's just assume everyone here realizes that you have no objectivity
(and could have no objectivity, really) on this issue and leave it be.
Cheers.
ummm.....my dislike of Florida and especially tebow is well known.
And even I dont think meyer is "shady". Where in the world do you get
the idea that "almost any objective person" would?
Dammit, wrong account.
Ah well, guess that cat's out of the bag... =/
How many accounts do you have/need?
I have exactly the number I need.
At the moment.
Cheers.
So, Slick, just curious, do you live in The Woodlands near Houston, or
in Houston?
That brings up an interesting point, actually - I've been meaning to ask
Bryan what motivated his move to England...
You know, funny story (funny because it's true) - I used to butt heads
with Bryan a lot, oh, mayhaps 5-6 years ago over at rec.gambling.poker.
Not in a bad way, didn't dislike the dewd, and he was just coming off
his stint in the military - if memory serves, he was being treated for
an injury of some sort. Just used to go back-n-forth because he was
really, really conservative then, and I was really, really liberal - and
we were both passionate about it, ya know?
Anyhow, he disappeared quite a while back - when I subscribed here I
went to read the FAQs, and the site was (IIRC) hosted by Bryan Slick - I
was like, whoa - that's a blast from the past.
Anyhow, I guess this story is neither funny nor interesting, but I
thought it was strange that he had shifted so far to the left, and, of
course, I'd shifted over to the right - although I'm thinking of purging
that particular meme - folks on the right are all crusty, ornery ol'
farts, ya know?
Cheers.
I've always been, and still am, fiscally conservative and socially
liberal. That's never changed, though I am more moderate these days.
I'm pretty sure that the website to which you refer is hosted by Jeff
Tindall, and that he's probably in mid-stroke at the idea of anyone
thinking that we're the same person. ;)
I agree... and generally feel deeply sorry (and a healthy contempt) for
anyone who defines themselves by partisan politics.
Lack of objectivity I can accept. After all, I am an alum and 30+ year fan.
Credibility is a different issue, and accusing me of nameless paranoid
Do you deny implying that he might have thrown the Pitt game, James?
We're not talkin' about me here, fella. You got up in arms about a
general description of your rampant sour-grapes-tinged homerism, so I
brought up something specific. Answer the question or don't, but
failing to do either while trying to change the subject just makes you
look childish (and like you'd rather avoid the answer).
ODL.
Slick is pretty much the king of the pot calling the kettle black.
Not so fast ... I think that "I call the kettle black" is another one
of his aliases.
Hey! Keep me out of this nonsense!
You're Brian Slick too?
You can provide loads of examples to back the above assertion, of
course. If you can't, you will of course come back to retract it.
I'd say 75% of your posts are hypocrisy, dude.
There; I proved it.
No. I'm myself. However, you said "I call the kettle black" which is
very close to my surname. As such, I resent the implication.
Raceist.
I've also implied that VPI is a vocational tech school. This does not mean
it's a deeply-held cherished belief. I've said lots of mean things about
Penn State and my son just graduated from there.
It's amazing that you can't see your self-righteous priggishness at work, in
that it's completely exposed by your humorless slogging attempt to pin
everything anybody ever said on rsfc as their absolute faith.
As I and every other WVU fan have told you, none of us would have had any
problem with DickRod manning up and saying "I can't pass up this job offer."
That is not what he did, and even a cursory review of the facts would
demonstrate that. There is no sour grapes in finding out that someone you
trusted violated that trust, and that you know no longer trust or respect
that person.
I am pleased to read that you are backing away from the utterly stupid
implication that your team's head coach may have thrown a game (or even
not tried very hard to win) while he was imprisoned in Morgan's Towne.
As for your continued childish attempts at slams on Rich Rodriguez, your
attitude and that of most WVU fans I've encountered is in fact the very
epitome of what is meant by 'sour grapes', but you'll never see that...
How can I back away from a position I never held? Quit fighting the straw
man.
You don't even know what "sour grapes" refers to, apparently. Go back and
reread your Aesop's fables.
> How can I back away from a position I never held? Quit fighting the straw
You raised the implication yourself, James, while being careful to
waffle just enough that you couldn't be called out as a completely
paranoid psycho on the order of Heiman talking about the President.
> You don't even know what "sour grapes" refers to, apparently. Go back and
Nice try, but no. Once you discovered you couldn't have Rodriguez, you
turned on him and decreed that you didn't want him, anyway.
