What did I tell you? Nearly everyone shuffles. The top two are solidly out
in front, but in terms of raw score there is virtually no difference between
the team at #3 and the team at #15. Expect just as much shuffling next week
as the teams sort themselves out (I hope).

My rankings after October 4:

1. Alabama
2. Oklahoma
3. Missouri
4. Vanderbilt
5. Texas Tech
6. Boise State
7. Northwestern
8. Utah
9. Ball State
10. Penn State
11. Texas
12. Louisiana State
13. Oklahoma State
14. Tulsa
15. Brigham Young
16. Kentucky
17. Georgia
18. Texas Christian
19. Cincinnati
20. Virginia Tech
21. California
22. Southern Cal
23. Pittsburgh
24. Georgia Tech
25. Ohio State

So what is it in your algorithm that would place Vandy so much higher
than PSU or Texas? It doesn't look to be SOS. I know the season will
shake things out, but I'm curious about the way it's setup.

The first thing to remember is that the difference this week is particularly
super-tiny; a butterfly's wing could have made a significant change. So
Vandy isn't actually "so much higher" compared to any other undefeated team.

The difference is technically SOS, but not by the conventional definition.
Most SOS systems just take the average of a team's opponents, which is why
most SOS systems suck. For my rankings, the short version of the story is
that Vanderbilt seems to be getting a little more credit for beating Auburn
and South Carolina than Penn State is for beating Illinois, or Texas is for
beating Colorado.

Beyond that, don't worry; it's still just really early.

Or Northwestern, for that matter. With its wins over Syracuse, Duke
and Iowa, it's higher than PSU and its wins over Oregon State,
Syracuse, Illinois and Purdue.

Uh, Vandy STOPPED and OUTSCORED The System (tm) by Tony Franklin (tm).

Who else - other than LSU - has done that?

Northwestern is currently #2 in the Sagarin ELO rankings (Alabama is
#1), so their schedule must be considered good across computer
algorithms.

As for the others mentioned above, Vandy is #4, while PSU is #8 and
Texas is #10.

ARE YOU CRAZY?!?!

The System (tm) by Tony Franklin (tm) scored 100% of the points and
managed to outscored ~~@CROOM!! by 20%.

NO OTHER TEAM CAN DO THESE THINGS!

CROOM'S offense gets credit for an extra td per game. It's
affirmitive action, SEC style.
