I knew Macaca would come up. It is hard to compare the two. Macaca is a
common slur for blacks in his mother's language. Either his mother was a
racist and he just picked up the term, or he knew it. Either way, it is
bad.
Many people use terms like "bananas" "coconuts" or "fruitcake" for
people they think are weird or nuts.

I've heard people called "bananas" or "fruitcake" a bazillion times,
this is the first time I've heard some called a "coconut" meaning
"moran." Have you?
Did the Marx brothers actually use that insult in their movie?

Yes, because I've heard people use the term "coconut college" to

Coconut is the latino equivalent to Oreo, and Deutsch was using it
that way.

I've never in my life heard someone called a "coconut" other than in
racial terms, of course that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It's
equiv. to "oreo."
As far as the internets are concerned, "that guy is coconuts" has a
grand total of 1 hit. "That guy is nuts" gets 3.9M. Deutsch was
using it as racial slur.

I've never heard coconuts used as a racial term, certainly not in the
context of "oreo" - which I assume means mixed race black/white.

"coconut or oreo" gets only 6,440 hits, mostly relating to food/cookies.
Although there are a few that back up the idea that they're both terms
for mixed race folk.
"You're coconuts" gets many more - 15,600, almost all of which relate to
being "crazy", a few cards short of a deck, whatever.
"You're nuts" gets many, many more. I wonder if "You're nuts" is a
shortening of what might have originally been "you're coconuts".
In any case - I would imagine that a shorter term would get used more -
we are inherently lazy (or are we just efficient?) and tend to use
shorter expressions when available.
Interestingly "You're off your rocker" only gets about twice as many
hits as the phrase "you're coconuts" (32,000). I guess that means it's
also racist (just trying to follow your twisted logic, Tom)?
Cheers.

I've *never* heard anyone referred to as being "coconuts" for being
weird. Bananas, nuts, fruitcake (although, watch out, that one can be
interpreted as an anti-gay slur), crazy, weird and a myriad others,
sure. But not coconut. I've also never heard it used as a racial slur
either.

I'm under no obligation to treat bigots and fearmongers with
kid gloves. Ridicule is exactly what they deserve, exactly
what they earn.
It does seem that you shouldn't be accused of making a racist
statement if you didn't realize it was offensive. And it does seem
that a fairly large percentage of people (including me) have never
heard the word 'coconut' used in a racist way. So the issue is, how
can we tell if Deutsch knew? We can't, despite Enright (and others)
claiming he did.
Here's a list of other racial/cultural slurs. They are also common
English words. How many of these have you ever heard before in a
racist context? (As with coconut, I have never heard any of these used
as a slur):
Apple
Chug
Eight Ball
Ginger
Jock
Pancake
Teapot

You Baggers crack me up.
But you when you throw your Glen Beck signs away,
at least respect the flag.
Thanks, bros.
s
Well, no, but I've got no problem with your reacting that way.
"hehehe....he said teabagger....snort...hehehe"

Wow, you guys are so cool.
Hey Bagger! That's hilarious! You guys are great!

Bullshit. Nobody but you and Enright seem to have heard of this
supposedly common use of the word "coconut."
Huck
Deutsch has made a few appearances on Morning Joe in the capacity
of expert in the area of publicity. He gets asked questions like,
"How do you think Tiger Woods has been handling this scandal?"
Huck
Nobody?

dumnass. "Nobody but you and Enright" clearly meant here in this here

Moving on to the typical "if he disagrees with me, he must be one of

I know you are, but what am I?
Coco puffs? You know that's a derogatory term for chunky black women
folk, right?
Cheers.
When they are part of a group that espouses fearmongering, and has bigots
carrying nasty signs around... it's not only easier, it's right.

No, I get a little stiffy out of the reaction of folks on the right.
It's hilarious how sensitive they are.

Its the "right" thats sensitive about the teabaggers. Right.
Uh oh...Cue David Loewe to lecture you about calling them
"teabaggers."
Dan
Not "about the teabaggers", about people calling the teabaggers
"teabaggers".

I remembered this morning how the "teabagger" name for these
operatives came about... they got their start by sending tea
bags to Washington on tax day last year. You can google this
up, it's easy to find.
cb
Noone cares about calling them teabaggers...its the infantile thinking
that its reffering to the sexual term EVERY time its said that gets
old. Other wise, its just a word.
And when you heard the term, you went "hehehe...he said
teabaggers....hehehe".....
We get it Chris....its got two meanings.
Well, duh. The idea of GOP operatives calling themselves
teabaggers is funny on a number of levels.

And before anyone in the movement had ever even heard of the sexual
practice called teabagging.
Seriously, Chris. It's offensive and you know it's offensive. Yet, you
continue on doing it. That doesn't speak well of you or for you.

Well, apparently *they* hadn't, or else they didn't care.

There is nothing offensive about a consensual teabagging. But
there is plenty offensive about teabaggers. In that respect,
I agree.

No, the reason it doesn't get old is the reaction it gets.
