Donny Deutsch is on MSNBC or CNBC? I've never seen him on the
former. He has his own show, which I rarely watch, on the latter.

I have never heard that was a racist term. My guess is that Deutsch
didn't know either.

I knew Macaca would come up. It is hard to compare the two. Macaca is a
common slur for blacks in his mother's language. Either his mother was a
racist and he just picked up the term, or he knew it. Either way, it is
bad.

Many people use terms like "bananas" "coconuts" or "fruitcake" for
people they think are weird or nuts.

I've heard people called "bananas" or "fruitcake" a bazillion times,
this is the first time I've heard some called a "coconut" meaning
"moran." Have you?

Did the Marx brothers actually use that insult in their movie?

Yes, because I've heard people use the term "coconut college" to
describe unaccredited or extremely poor college programs with the
implication that it is a "moron college". I've also heard people say
that someone is coconuts, meaning bats in the belfry.

Coconut is the latino equivalent to Oreo, and Deutsch was using it

I've never in my life heard someone called a "coconut" other than in
racial terms, of course that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It's
equiv. to "oreo."

As far as the internets are concerned, "that guy is coconuts" has a
grand total of 1 hit. "That guy is nuts" gets 3.9M. Deutsch was
using it as racial slur.

that's a racial slur it's the first time I've ever heard that.

I've never heard coconuts used as a racial term, certainly not in the
context of "oreo" - which I assume means mixed race black/white.

"coconut or oreo" gets only 6,440 hits, mostly relating to food/cookies.
Although there are a few that back up the idea that they're both terms
for mixed race folk.

"You're coconuts" gets many more - 15,600, almost all of which relate to
being "crazy", a few cards short of a deck, whatever.

"You're nuts" gets many, many more. I wonder if "You're nuts" is a
shortening of what might have originally been "you're coconuts".

In any case - I would imagine that a shorter term would get used more -
we are inherently lazy (or are we just efficient?) and tend to use
shorter expressions when available.

Interestingly "You're off your rocker" only gets about twice as many
hits as the phrase "you're coconuts" (32,000). I guess that means it's
also racist (just trying to follow your twisted logic, Tom)?

Cheers.

I've *never* heard anyone referred to as being "coconuts" for being
weird. Bananas, nuts, fruitcake (although, watch out, that one can be
interpreted as an anti-gay slur), crazy, weird and a myriad others,
sure. But not coconut. I've also never heard it used as a racial slur
either.

Bigotry doesn't care about the decisions a person makes. It
cares only about how he/she is born.

So I suggest that Celia put away her smelling salts and pearls

I'm under no obligation to treat bigots and fearmongers with
kid gloves. Ridicule is exactly what they deserve, exactly
what they earn.

It does seem that you shouldn't be accused of making a racist
statement if you didn't realize it was offensive. And it does seem
that a fairly large percentage of people (including me) have never
heard the word 'coconut' used in a racist way. So the issue is, how
can we tell if Deutsch knew? We can't, despite Enright (and others)
claiming he did.

Here's a list of other racial/cultural slurs. They are also common
English words. How many of these have you ever heard before in a
racist context? (As with coconut, I have never heard any of these used
as a slur):

Apple
Chug
Eight Ball
Ginger
Jock
Pancake
Teapot

Food item or type of block in football usually associated with an

something you make tea in

The only one above I've heard used in a racist like manner is
'ginger'...which is not really racist, but a derogatory term for
someone with red hair.

I have refrained from calling them "teabaggers" on rsfc because it
derails the conversation.

I don't care either way, but I've noticed that if you call them
"baggers" on rsfc the main point of the thread is rarely addressed.
Instead Loewe or someone else comes in to show their outrage and
accuse you of Nazi propaganda tactics and all hilarity breaks out.

I've totally never heard 'coconut' as a racist term.

I've also never heard it as a replacement for 'banana' or 'just nuts'.

I've heard 'coconut college' for a bad school though, but not for the

I'm not sure if I have either, but I'm much less likely to remember

someone using a racial slur.

Because you have personally interviewed every Tea Partier in America and

On your own head...

It is much easier to just label those who disagree as being bigots and
fearmongers, isn't it, Chris?

It is easy, when their prime identifying characteristics are
their ignorance, their anger, and their racism.

This whole thing is a yet another hypocritical merry-go-round of
politics. One side denounces, the other side defends. Change
tunes...side B denounces, side A defends.

Be honest Chris. You and much of the left that uses teabaggers get a
little stiffy thinking about the double entendre. Its takes you back
to fifth grade and all the giggling you did when you watched that

"And all the time - such is the tragi-comedy of our situation - we continue
to clamour for those very qualities we are rendering impossible. You can
hardly open a periodical without coming across the statement that what our
civilization needs is more "drive", or dynamism, or self-sacrifice, or
"creativity". In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand
the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and
enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.
We castrate and bid the geldings to be fruitful."
