CHARLESTON, WV—According to the results of a Gallup poll released
Monday, the overwhelming majority of rural white Americans said they
would rather vote for Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than U.S.
president Barack Obama. “I like him better,” said West Virginia
resident Dale Swiderski, who, along with 77 percent of rural Caucasian
voters, confirmed he would much rather go to a baseball game or have a
beer with Ahmadinejad, a man who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust
and has had numerous political prisoners executed, than spend time
with Obama. “He takes national defense seriously, and he’d never let
some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does.”
According to the same Gallup poll, 60 percent of rural whites said
they at least respected that Ahmadinejad doesn’t try to hide the fact
that he’s Muslim.

This is too precious. Iron Mike fell for an Onion piece. Proof

I really want to see an "lrish Mike" post from 1985. Or even 1990.
I find zero posts through 1990 when searching for either "lrish
Mike" or "Irish Mike".

Right. I can find some in science groups as early as November
1986.

At one time, I could find some of Linus Torvald's posts about his
Linux project, around 1988. That's eluding me now.

Usnet has existed since 1980

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

Most people who had access to it in the 80's were affiliated with a college
or university or possibly military. I've been posting to it since the
early 90's but back then a lot of people used their real names to post. They
weren't so worried about internet stalkers and trolls like today. I had a
Unix shell account and used .tin to post.

Go ahead, make my day, show me one of your posts from 1985.
Show me how to obtain this "readily available information".
Show me up, if you can!

But of course, the off-topic troll couldn't find such a post

Just because UseNet existed in the 80s doesn't mean you were
posting to it. When somebody brags about "posting to UseNet since
1985", they should be able to point to one of their Deja News (now
Google Groups) archived posts, no later than 1990.

If it's not in the archive, where is it?

I've not been able to find any of my old posts on google. The couple I
found were by accident and on some dark page with all the headers and
the post from the original star trek forum.

It seemed to me that only the "fake" 'I, Mike' has been finding The
Onion to be a credible news source. Otoh, I haven't seen the
verifiably "real" one denounce the impostor, so, indeed, whoTF knows?

Is that from wikishit? I'm finding posts from 1982 that were
originally archived by Deja News. Most of them are (net.*) groups.

Here's a two post thread from 1982 about BASIC compilers, posted
to (net.micro) for the Apple II and the IBM PC.

DejaNews has only existed since 1995. I'm simply saying I wouldn't be
surprised at all if a lot of older posts are missing from their archives.
Plus they agreed not to archive posts with x-no-archive in the headers so a
lot wasn't archived afterwards either.

As for Irish Mike, I have no clue when he started posting. I know he's
taken part in poker forums for a long time though. You just sounded like
you didn't think it was possible anyone could have been posting since 1985.

There were some personal archives of usenet maintained by whoever bothered
to maintain them. Once Deja News caught on, they solicited these archives
to be included in Deja News. They are by no means complete or comprehensive.
Any post before 1995 may or may not still exist.

Google is a bit dodgy even on stuff after 1995, but I digress.
