It makes no sense. Chavez would have paid way more than $20 million to FARC
for the opportunity to look the hero. The Columbian govt might have paid off
the informant, but these were FARC's most important hostages. It is really
hard to imagine that they would give them up for a mere $20M.

I'm not saying I believe the conspiracy theory or not. I'm not
dismissing or accepting that explanation out of hand but...
I did wonder why the FARC guerillas, a group of people who seem to
live in the jungle short of food and just about everything else,
thought their leaders could suddenly come up with a bunch of
helicopters and if they could, would use them to transport hostages
around.
Also, remember what turned out to be behind Reagan's diplomatic
triumph regarding Lebanon hostages.
It is way too early for a definitive conclusion either way.
