We've heard other parents talk about how great these videos are, but
after we heard about the underlying christian themes, we bagged it.
Not that we have anything against christians per se, but my wife is
Jewish, and we both find pimping your religion to be distasteful.

I find the downright idiocy of these cartoons to be
distasteful. I'd rather watch a full day of "The Wiggles"
than a 90-minute VeggieTales movie.

I don't consider it "pimping your religion." I'd rather my daughter watch a

least I don't have to worry about what she might be learning.

No sweat, it's mostly Old Testament stuff, so your wife should be all set.
My nephew, who is small for his age, loved the David/Goliath bit. Seemed
to lift his spirits a bit.

And yes, you do have some against Christians because portraying Biblical
stories in an entertaining manner to children is in no way "pimping your
religion" and the only religion you appear to have a problem with is
Christianity.

How is it any more idiotic than any other cartoon? Have you witnessed
the jackassery that is Pokemon? I just can't help but think that there
is another reason why you would dislike the cartoon....just can't think
of what it might be.

I guess I'm lucky in that my kid doesn't really show much of an interest
in watching videos yet (she's 21 months). She loves watching Elmo on Sesame
St. while eating breakfast, but after that she gets bored and wants to do
something else.

I've actually never seen one, but I know they are in our house

No, we have a Pokemon-free household.

Other than the VeggieTales video that someone gave her for
her birthday, she watches Stanley (kicks ass), Pooh, and
whatever that turtle cartoon is.

I think you pretty well hit on a key differnce between chritianity and
judaism. I don't recall anything about evangelism in the Tora, but it's
pretty prominent in the Gospel.

I didn't think it was possible to make a cartoon even more innocuous

Yeah. I know all about local churches and their attitudes as they drive out
into their mission fields. I, sadly, live in a development from which the
only exit is onto the same street which the parking lots of two very large
churches empty into. On sundays, you can't even leave the development at any
time when people are coming from or going to the churches. Will those kind,
thoughtful, Christlike, evangelising people let you LEAVE your own
development? Not on your life. They jam bumper to bumper, in the hopes
they'll get through the next light.

Fie upon them. I have half a mind to write to their ministers and remind
them that everybody in the neighborhood knows they're coming from church,
and corporate lack of consideration to your neighbor is also a kind of
witness. Just a bad kind.

We have a guy who lives next door to the church who made a very public
campaign about how horrible our congregation is, how we block his driveway,
etc. So, our church launched an internal campaign to explain the city's
parking laws to everyone and remind everyone that a good Christian leaves
enough room for someone to get out of their driveway. Still, this guy
persisted with the nitpicking -- until we called our attorney and had him
call the guy and tell him that if he has any issues to feel free to serve
papers. He shut up after that.

The point... I say call the pastor and explain your problem. If he treats
you like crap, then grab the kids and sit out in front of the church on
Sunday morning holding up signs complaining about their driving. A couple of
weeks of this and one of two scenarios will happen:

a) the church folks will balk, attempt to get a restraining order, the local
TV channels will come out and cover it just in time for sweeps, the radio
stations will discuss it, the pressure will become so unending that they'll
be forced to back down from their restraining order and fix their problem
AND/OR someone will admit to having an affair and trigger a schism that'll
cut the traffic in the neighborhood in half

b) they'll get the message and get some traffic wardens

Let me know if you go through with it. I'd be happy to hand out free Bibles
to these heathen. :)

1) Hamtaro is no longer shown at 7:30 Eastern... (RSFCK!)... it was the One

Amazing how this works for my son, too. He needs to be at the table
and chowing on the Lucky Charms when Hamtaro starts. When the closing
credits roll, he needs to find his backpack and head down to the
corner to wait for the bus.

I guess I need to stop imposing my tastes on his choices, because CN
isn't programming for me at that hour. I doubt my dad liked the
Groovie Ghoulies very much, either. Of course, in those days, my dad
was sleeping in on Saturdays, so he wouldn't know.

Well, that would liven things up. This morning's episode about
"Hamtaro runs in the wheel all night, so Jenny doesn't get any sleep,
and Hamtaro thinks she's going to die because he doesn't understand
colloquial phrases like "I'm dying for a nap"" wasn't what you would
call lively.

(Wow. Could that last paragraph be any more GAY?!? $1)

I don't think their main goal is to be evangelical since most of the
people that purchase them are Christians to begin with...people who
grow tired of their kids watching the crap that is on TV.

I find absolutely nothing wrong with videos that present kids with
experiences they face on a daily basis, and show them a different way
of dealing with these situations.

I highly encourage every Christian parent to buy these videos for
their kids. They are not "over the top,"...they are *not*
evangelical...they simply show a different way to tell a story.

It's this generations answer to Davey and Golliath.

Oh, they *have* them. They do. To help people get out onto the main street
directly from the parking lot. Those of us 1/8 mile down the road are SOL,
and there are 6-8 streets, some private, some opening from developments with
no other outlets, and no traffic wardens, along that stretch of road.

One of 'em's a Foursquare church. I know they use Bibles. I've occasionally
gone to churches, back when I would still set foot in a church, where a
Bible was never cracked, sometimes even by the minister.

I think I'll try to give them a call today. Maybe there will be a PSA on
Sunday because of it. And for the record, I do know they're "just human". I
do know, per C.S. Lewis, that Christianity doesn't make people perfect, and
you can only compare the "saved" person to his previous "unsaved" self, not
to anyone else. But their group courtesy still pretty much sucks.

Only slightly related, but I"ve seen this is another area of life.
When I was still slinging steaks, Sunday was the worst day. Not
because it was busy, but all the church goers seemed to forget their
lessons once the organ ceased to play. Perhaps it was overwhelming
guilt from the Holy Spirit, but they always seemed to be in a bad
mood. Occasionally, one of the more evengelistic minded would ask me
if I attended church. They got a little defensive when I mentioned
that if church goers would stop eating out on Sunday, my company
might consider it unprofitable to be open. Or at the very least not
require management to work ~50 Sundays a year.

And don't get me started on ministers who expected discounts on
Sunday.

WiNK, Shoot straight you bastard, don't mess it up!

Absolutely. But like others here, I never missed a church service
(Sunday mornings, evenings, Wednesday etc.) until into my 20's, so I
tend to be more aware, and hurt, by some hypocrisies.

"Fruity Tales" is a different kind of video series.

I've heard it told about Mormons and deer hunting.

In the mormon church, they have this thing called "Fast Sunday". You
aren't suppossed to eat until after you have finished going to all your
services on sunday. Which for most mormons when I was growing up meant you
weren't eating anything until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. When I was
about 7 or 8 I got smart and started to stash food in my room the night
before.
But oh those days that I forgot.....painful...

"Organized religion" is a redundancy, since there is no such
thing as a non-organized religion.

This is simply not true. My wife considers herself a Protestant, but
that's about it. She has a very particular conglomeration of ideas
from various organized religions which she considers to be her
religion.

I think it's my Agnostic influence. <grin>

I said there's no such thing as a "non-organized religion", not
"disorganized religion".

The problem with this cafeteria approach is that one winds up
creating a God in one's own image rather than the other way around,
and there's no point in there being an omniscient, omnipotent God if
He can't tell you the way things are.

Of course I don't know the person in question here, or the nature of
her beliefs, but perhaps her god is not omniscient or omnipotent.

Just because you don't understand God doesn't mean he's not there.

Well, Trent said she has a Protestant outlook on things, so she
would seem to believe in the Christian God. However, I don't see the
point of believing in a non-omniscient and non-omnipotent "god".
Basically, it's like believing in a supreme being that isn't supreme.
If that's the case, you may as well pick any schmuck to worship; it
wouldn't make any difference who it was, since no one could then
provide you with infallible answers to questions about life, the
universe, and everything. Of course, there are some fans of Bobby
Bowden or Joe Paterno who seem to think otherwise....
