One thing I've found is that addicts always seem to meet somebody.

Who knows? All I know is that addicts become addicts regardless of others.
Good girls, bad girls, preacher's daughters and atheists. Secretaries
and college professors. Black and white. Rich and poor. It is an inside
job.

Circumstances don't cause addiction, and no person has enough power
to do that to another.

Was he a bad influence? Probably. Was he so powerful he could have acted
on her without her permission? Certainly not.

there is no question, however, that circumstances play a tremendous
role in creating the right situation for addiction to take hold.

Also, if you never try cocaine once you cant get "addicted" to it.
Generally, the way to avoid ever doing cocaine is to not be around
people who do it.

So circumstances are incredibly important for people who have that
brain chemistry

if there was just alcohol and no benzo, why did every story on the
matter make a big point to specify that there were no illegal drugs in
her system. Since we know winehouse's biggest drugs of abuse were
alcohol and prescription sedatives and such, why not make mention of
that too if she really was benzo negative?

Regardless, she died directly from drugs/alcohol. seeing as how her
doc was alcohol above all else, it is fitting that she died from acute
alcohol intoxication.

I don't believe this at all...circumstances are everything. Let's
just say I know a woman who was married for a very long time (20+
years)....the epitome of a church going good girl...her husband died
and she met another man...that other man was a piece of shit drug user
who in turn turned the good girl into a drug user. I have no doubt in
my mind that the woman would still be on the straight and narrow had
her husband not died and she never met this new guy.

I don't know a damb thing about Whitney Houston so my statement was
more conjecture than anything else.

I am not saying that people don't avoid pitfalls by making good
choices early on and sticking with them. But I am guessing that normal
people don't face the temptations that an international superstar
does. She was going to meet many Bobby Browns, and be put in many
situations.

I don't know either. But from knowing many, many addicts, I know
that people can get into trouble anywhere, anyhow. It doesn't depend
on one person.

Librium is a barbiturate, one of the nastiest drugs
to become dependent upon. Heroin can easily kill
a user, but heroin withdrawal is a walk in the park
contrasted with barbiturate withdrawal.

"Barbiturates withdrawal symptoms can include
restlessness, insomnia, weakness, dizziness, nausea,
sweating and anxiety. There may be tremors, seizures,
hallucinations and psychosis. Users may become hostile
and violent. Without proper treatment, hyperthermia,
circulatory failure, and death can result."

Librium is not a barbiturate.

Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) is a sedative/hypnotic drug and benzodiazepine.
Benzodiazipines are sometimes referred to as minor tranquilizers. Valium
is another wildly used benzo.

Some barbiturates are seconal, amytal, phenobarbital. Definitely two
different classes of drugs.

Benzos are notoriously bad for withdrawal symptoms after long-term
use/abuse.

while it is true that benzos and barbituates are two different classes
of drugs, their withdrawl picture for heavy chronic users is very
similar......and I'll generally use the same detox protocol(or very
similar) for both.

of course almost nobody abused barbituates anymore. Whereas benzos
are obviously about the most abused drugs out there. It's very rare
to see a pt who abuses barbituates in 2012.....
