A walk-on from a community college, I think, no scholarship, and hasn't
missed a kick yet.

When it gets to DVD it can have a "jump to your favorite kick" option
on the special features menu.

You'd never see a kicker win the hypesman. What if he goes all season
and never misses a kick?

When Kelly asked to kick a 50 yard field goal, you know his coach has
already set up him to fall. I think he will make a 55 yard one next week
then short on a 60 yard.

If nothing else, NBC's finally going to get something out of their
Notre Dame contract. People are going to watch the games now. At
least until he misses.

The season's only half over. Georgia Tech's kicker hasn't
missed yet either.

But why is nick talking about kickers,
after what happened in South Carolina yesterday?

1. I grew up a few miles south of Notre Dame.

2. I like Clemson and they lost.

3. I can't stand Steve Spurier.

But looking at the front page of the paper this morning, you'd think
it was V-J Day or something.

I don't think that it was done intentionally, but when he thinks about
it, I'm sure that Kelly would like to have this distraction go away. Of
course, now that he owns the record, the distraction has already been
diminished quite a bit, but it's still there. Expect a 70-yard attempt
sometime soon.

Some in the Georgia media, and probably elsewhere,
refer to Spurrier as the evil genius. Since S.C. beat
Georgia a few weeks ago he can't be all bad. I like
Clemson too, except when they play Georgia Tech
week after next, and after last year, no doubt revenge
is on their minds.

And like all evil geniuses, he'll figure some way to screw it all up
in the end.

I like Spurrier, somehow. And I can only suppose that I must've found
a magical, subliminal way to totally discount his misanthropic affect
(which has been known to shrivel whole gardens). Maybe it's because,
to paraphrase Robert Mitchum in RYAN'S DAUGHTER, "I think he is a man
who suffers..."

You're evil, duh! (NTTIAWWT)

I like Spurrier because he used to give Duke a vote in the preseason
coaches poll. Evil genius, indeed!

Kelly will have a kick returner make a fair catch on the one and then
send in the kicking team.

You seem to assume that a 70-yarder is impossible to make. We've seen
kicks that would have been good from 70 but that were kicked from 56,
57, etc...

That doesn't mean that the ball would have been
kicked the same way from 70. What's the longest
that you know about? Kevin Butler kicked a 60.5
yard field goal for Georgia against Clemson in 1984.

Actually, the college record is 69 yards. Of course, most of the
really long ones were off the old 2 inch tees.

Some guy kicked a 65 yarder back in the 1890s--on a drop kick. How
the heck did he manage that?

Either strong leg, strong tailwind, or some combination of the two.

Not at all. That's why I have him downing the ball on the one.

That record-breaking kick would have been good from at least ten yards
further, and maybe more, IIRC.
