Getting bored with all the OT postings in here so here's the results for Day 1 of the Draft Camp. Players are split up into categories of small midfielders, medium forwards, ruckmen and tall forwards.
DRAFT Camp results - DAY 1
Here is a list of the top three players in each category for day one of the National Draft Camp.

The Sprint Test (5m, 10m and 20m) figures are in seconds. The agility test result is just the score they received for the test I think. The Bench Press figures are in kilograms, and the vertical jump figures are in centimetres I guess...
Interesting to see that the player mentioned the most in the best results (for speed, strength and vertical jump off left leg) is Port Adelaide Magpies player Matthew Lokan. I don't think Lokan even played a reserves game for Port this year but, on these results, will no doubt find himself lining up for an AFL club next year.

"Cheap shot"??????? Port Power are the same as every other AFL club, they do not develop junior talent, the inference I responded to. If you can't handle a little humour to boot, tough tit.

This type of response makes me wonder about a persons ability to be objective, your sense of humour is obviously a one way street. Attack Essendon, look out, here comes the red and black avenger, David Blake, but when he takes a cheap shot, it's all in fun, and he'll shoot from the hip at anyone daring to question him.
Just a minor point David, the original post said, and I quote "Yeh and hopefully for the Power. Hands off our homegrown stars" This was in reference to a lad by the name of Matthew Lokan, who is in the junior age teams at Alberton, which just happens to be the home base of the Power, plus the Port Adelaide Magpies. If you believe Lokan is not "homegrown" your dictionary differs from mine.

Nope, not at all.

*snort* /checks undies, still on the inside/ Phew, that's a relief :o)
Like I did when PM posted that Essendon were boring? Boy did I flame him good and proper. I can handle fun as much as the next person. Hypocrisy and double standards piss me off.
>but when he takes a cheap shot,
Again, what "cheap shot"????
>it's all in fun, and he'll shoot from the hip at anyone daring to question him.
Yeah right. When did I do that to you? All I said was "Port aren't worth the effort" or something along those lines with a :-) at the end to indicate humor. That's hardly "shooting from the hip". It was more a dig at SS and PM who sometimes go on about how other people find their club so fascinating. And people reckon I'm a tad sensitive about my team. Sheesh.
>Just a minor point David, the original post said, and I quote >"Yeh and hopefully for the Power. >Hands off our homegrown stars"
To which I responded "since when have the Power had homegrown anything?", a question intended to point out that *AFL* clubs do not have homegrown stars as they do not have junior programs.
>This was in reference to a lad by the name of Matthew Lokan, who is >in the junior age teams at Alberton, which just happens to be the home >base of the Power, plus the Port Adelaide Magpies. If you believe >Lokan is not "homegrown" your dictionary differs from mine.
As far as the "Power" are concerned he aint. Players developed by the Port Magpies do not belong to the Port Power.
Anyway this seems to have gotten way beyond what it was originally intended. If you want to take offence at a suggestion that Port Magpies players don't belong to the Power that's fine, but my original post wasn't intended to offend. If you think it's a cheap shot well and good, not much I can do about that. I'm off to watch a bit more of the Olympics. Enjoy.

Not entirely true, Port Adelaide (like the other 3 WA and SA clubs) do put a lot of money back into local footy. Can't say the same for Essendon.

True, though without the requirement in their licences would those 4 clubs?

I don't recall saying that, but no doubt you've got the post filed away somewhere. I would more likely have said that *you* are boring.
Dave, your attempt to add a bit of humour to your otherwise dull and monotonous refutations has fallen flat. Stick to what you know best and I'll go back to ignoring your posts...

By the way, I was just venting my spleen to the world that the players that Port Adelaide supporters (magpie and power alike) watch week in, week out such as Didak, Graham Johncock, Lokan etc are all going to be forced to play away from Alberton. Bring back the days when you didn't have to think, 'well that's the last we see of him playing at Port'.
Ok I've had my tanty now.
Still think they should change the draft so that each AFL club can choose 2 players a year from their nominated 'local' club before the draft. That way, over time, you would see a lot of the homegrown talent stay. Essendon etc could nominate their VFL sides and do the same thing. Crows would have to choose a club to affiliate to say Norwood?? and do the same.
By the way, the other SANFL clubs can 'suffer in their jocks' when they get no money from Port this year. Maybe if our interstate players could actually play in the same SANFL team like their Victorian competitors they would be more successful. Other SANFL clubs think ahead....pigs arse...that's why they have all been losers over the years.....

Of course not, why would they? The AFL provides no incentive to invest in grass roots footy.

Perzacerly. Which is bloody stupid. I'd be quite happy to see clubs investing most of their money back into grass roots footy, particularly given the current state it's in.

snipo much sensible stuff
This is bascially what used to happen with zoning in the VFL where you could develop players through the under '19's and reserves. But until there are less clubs in Melbourne I can't see it returning. If there were only 3 or 4 (or even less) then perhaps it would work.

This is exactly what I have been arguing for ages. If you give clubs a development area where they can pick the top player from each year prior to the draft, it will force clubs to become more involved in the area and in grass roots football. Also, I believe that players shouldn't be drafted until they have played a senior game in their home competition. Out of the 8 Port Magpies players at the Draft Camp, only two have played senior football this year and maybe another two in the reserves. That means that players go straight from the U/19's in SA (or wherever) to playing in the VFL and sometimes the step up is too much for them. One only has to see the number of players drafted who fall by the way side for proof of this. Currently, recruiting scouts have to rely on watching games against other 17 year olds and beep tests and the like to gauge how they will play against 25 year olds. A season in the SANFL/Westar/TFL etc. will assist players maturity and will give recruiters a better understanding of players' ability. There may be some cases where players are held back a year so that rather than play one game at the end of a season, their local clubs get a full year out of them the next year but in many cases these juniors (like Port's Alan Didak) were integral parts of their team and to keep them in the reserves another year would simply be detrimental to the club and to the player.
