in between the men's final and the women's final, gold discs were handed
out to stanford and wisconsin, and the spirit awards were given. texas
women came down with the award, and the william & mary and swarthmore men
tied for it. both men's teams had perfect spirit scores, and there was
only one physical award. of course, the obvious solution was to rosh for it.

both teams huddled to talk strategy. both brandon silverman (swat's capn)
and w&m's captain (whose name i don't know, sorry) had their fires, and
the whole stadium knew we would see one or both of them come out here.
the rosh took about 3 minutes to set up and 15 seconds to actually occur;
the guys went rapid-fire after strategizing as a team.

so here's how it went down, and it should go down in history as the best
rosh ever:

first throw
w&m: paper
swat: rock
w&m up 1-0

second throw
w&m: paper (i think)
swat: fire
tied 1-1

third throw
w&m: fire
swat: water
swat wins 2-1, takes the spirit award.

so the winning rosh was: paper, fire, water

unbelievable. my only question is why did the w&m guy choose not to throw
fire or water on the second throw? once you secure the 1-0 lead, it seems
to me that your only choice is whether to throw fire yourself or to throw
water because your opponent will throw it. unless he anticipated the water
throw by brandon, and figured paper would win him the award.

can there possibly be a better rosh between two people? both fires were
thrown, and the winning throw came on a quenched fire. amazing.

Any chance you could shut up about this shit? It's annoying as hell, and
really stupid.

<snipped rosham crap>

Thank you Willis. It was funny for maybe the first two posts on the subject.
Now it's not.

I'm sorry, I must have missed the "rosham crap" in question. Could
someone repost it please? Again and again, if you don't mind.

Hehe.

Let me settle this. I'm the WM guy who threw my fire. I figured it was
so obvious that i was going to throw it that he wouldn't throw water
until later. I threw it bravely and proudly and was immediately cut
from the team (for being a dumbass who threw fire at such an obvious
time). I'm glad to have thrown it in my college carreer (even thought
it got pissed on) and I really hope this line of discussion ends here.

Hey Matt...

Why did Swat take down all those awesome jokes about your mom? As
long as you play Ultimate there should be jokes about Matt Murphy's
mom...

oh they're still there, becca. check out:

http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/org/earthworms/rosters

each roster page features each player's favorite murphy's mom joke. the
funniest part is that my dad checked out the page but fortunately
somehow didn't see the jokes. however, he also reads rsd every now and
then so maybe i'm busted anyway.

and i appreciate that ultimate and jokes about my mom go so hand in hand.
it's the least i could do to give back to my beloved sport...
