I got to say that i have enjoyed watching these recaps. its pretty
evident that usau is trying to promote this event as a traditinal
"real sport" by conforming to the same standard format that other
sports would use in "re-caping" their sports events. why they feel
they must skimp or refuse to fully coform with the "rule enforcement/
game management" aspect is what i dont get. none the less the
informative aspect is comendable.

BUT, as the ulticritic i would be remissed if i didnt offer up some
critisisms.......so here they are:

1) the camera angles suck (no ladders in boulder?)

2) i still dont get why usau allows the players to wear random/
mismatching hats. (such a bush league look)

3) I HATE, or better yet LOATH, that COMPLTELY STUPID two part goal
signal that mimicks the aussie rules football signal.(cant they just
signal a goal IMMEDIATLY and then waive it off in the rare instance
there is a call on the throw that would negate the goal?)

i cant wait to watch the free nxg features so i can do a side by side
comarison to the audl features that doc had recently supplied us with.

I actually thought these recaps were pretty meh, for a few
reasons.

1. As mentioned, the camera angles were terrible. Several
"plays" were obscured by players on the field.

2. Camera angle aside, the choice of plays themselves were
not all that great. There had to have been more exciting
plays going on, so either USAU didn't budget enough
cameras/crew (very likely) or they just did a horrible job
selecting the plays to use.

3. The commentator was fine as far as his diction and word
choice, but the timing of his comments often spoiled the
result of a play or game (which might be his fault but might
also be the editors' fault, but in either case, the end
product suffered). Most professional highlight clips (e.g.
from ESPN) do a good job of keeping the viewer in
anticipation until the play itself happens. Several times
in these highlights, the commentator announced exactly what
was going to happen a few seconds before it did.

However, I will say they are better than in years past, and
getting them out while the tournament is still going on is
pretty cool, so at least they're heading in the right
direction.

My problem is how completely un-comprehensive they are.

Are they really going to put together a recap of day 2, and
not show or mention pre-quarters one bit? Pre-quarters are
what day 2 is all about, how do you neglect to include any
coverage of it?

They're making the same mistakes as last year. For anyone
who cares about ultimate, we know the story lines before we
watch these recaps. We know who won already and most likely
we have a vague idea of the storyline for the game. What we
DONT know is what it looked like, and that's what I want to
see personally. I want to see the plays, and not just the
routine scores like they mostly show. The recaps can keep
the ESPN style narrating but the video to go along with it
should be much more impressive. The old UltiVillage recaps
are perfect examples. If they would show highlights in that
format and then just narrate the story like they are doing
currently these recaps would be so much better.

Show the highlights in this format:

And then add in the professional aspect of the narration.
We want to see the good and exciting plays, not routine open
side scores with no defense!

It's a good point, but I wonder if the film editors have
football experience, because I have the exact same complaint
about the football highlights (both college and NFL) that we
get every Saturday and Sunday evening on TV. Some team will
win 23-21 with a game-winning field goal with 4 seconds
left, and invariably they will choose to show that field
goal in the highlights. Field goals are the most boring
play in football, they all look alike (assuming that they're
made, I'm not counting the exciting blocked field goals or
the occasional exciting 50+ yard field goal), and the
so-called highlight tells us nothing about the key plays in
the game that set up that game-winner.

It sounds like the USAU editors are making the same mistake,
showing a scoring play which might've been pivotal in terms
of the score of the game but is not informative in terms of
showing the viewer what the overall plays looked like.
Instead of the "routine scores" they should show the play
that set up that score, the great breakmark pass or the
layout D to get possession (or if relevant the breakdown on
D that permitted the score) or the play that is the ultimate
Ultimate cliche but is still exciting: the layout grab.

Sports video editors seem to think that they have to tell
the viewer a story by showing the plays that scored, but
that's a mistake. We all know what a game-winning field
goal or routine Ultimate score looks like. Show us the
plays that set up those plays, that were pivotal even though
non-scoring, or if nothing else are exciting to watch.
