The Cornell University Men's Ultimate Frisbee Team ("the Buds") is pleased
to announce the first MDSA scholarship, to be awarded to incoming members of
the class of 2006. The Buds feel that attention to juniors-level play and
recruiting will become standard practice for college programs in the near
future: the contribution that past juniors have made to college level play
is considerable. We believe that the MDSA scholarship along with a modest
recruiting effort will help us attract juniors talent without leading
ineluctably into sacrifices of SOTG.

About the team.

The Buds, founded in 1972, maintain the longest continuously running college
ultimate program. Cornell has qualified consistently for UPA College
Nationals, making one finals and six semifinals appearances. Past members
include Josh Faust, captain of JAM, Jason Haas, captain of Electric Pig, and
rules-guru Chris Van Holmes, as well as extreme skier Rob Deslauries and
Bill Nye "the Science Guy." Many other Buds alumni have gone on to compete
successfully at the club level.

Ranked 6th nationally in 2001 and pre-ranked #3 for 2002 by UNCW coach Mike
Gerics, the Buds show all signs of continuing their tradition of success.
This year's Buds went 18-1 in the fall against other college teams, and will
lose only two graduating seniors at the end of the 2002 season.

About the scholarship.

Final terms have yet to be determined, but the MDSA scholarship will be
awarded to one to three incoming freshmen. The amount of the award(s) will
be between $1000 and $2500, to be paid in full (applied to the student's
university account) in May, 2003 at the close of the UPA college series.

What are we looking for.

· Athleticism

One of the great things about ultimate is that anyone can find a game at
their level. One of the worst things about top college ultimate teams is
that not everyone has the athletic ability to contribute on the field. It is
important that candidates have the quickness, coordination, conditioning and
vertical necessary to compete successfully at the college level.

· Skills

The Buds run an offense which is a lot less free-wheeling than many of our
college counterparts. Consequently, we are not looking for players who can
put the full-field hammer. A consistent backhand, forehand, good reading
skills and field sense are all that is essential.

· Attitude

Also stemming from our style of play is the need for players who are willing
to look off the full-field hammer more often than not. Cornell plays a
team-oriented game, looking to everyone, not just a few stars, to come
through in the clutch. In addition, we are seeking players with strong work
ethic: those who will make the commitment to train hard through the
off-season, attend practice regularly, and give everything on defense.

Unfortunately, funding for the scholarship was secured after the university'
s application deadline. As a result, in addition to the qualities listed
above, candidates must have already applied to Cornell for admission in fall
2002.

We encourage you to identify possible candidates for the MDSA scholarship to
us, indicating salient physical characteristics (height, weight, 40yd dash
time, vertical) and dates and locations of tournaments in which we could
watch the candidate in action. Please send this information to Mike Nash,
mr...@cornell.edu, or Todd Gregorian, tgre...@umich.edu. Any players
interested in playing for Cornell in the future should also feel free to
contact Mike or Todd, or check out the Buds website at
http://www.rso.cornell.edu/BUDS/default.html.

oh jeeze Juniors.
all that these guys have ever learned was taught to them at WUFF College
Spring Training Camp here in Wilmington....they attended two years in a row
and have since exploded on the college ultimate scene.

come to UNCW and get 5 years straight of WUFF Camp playing for the Warriors
and UNCW Seamen!!!!!

~~
....ok...this post is not sincere as i have the utmost respect for Cornell
Bud Ultimate.

i battled against them at the highest level of college ultimate for 5 years
and they have always maintained the highest level of devotion, passion,
skill, respect, spirit and love for the battle.
the buds have taught me some of the most valuable lessons that one can learn
in the sport of ultimate....
and any junior that earns their scholarship had better be ready to rise up
and compete with them at the top.

nice work Bud Ultimate.
best of luck in your search for the scholarship recipient

Good point John. Well Buds, how do you get away with it? Or is it because
ultimate is a club sport, not part of athletics?..... or what? I'm curious.

Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The
river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the
basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the
rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.

I am haunted by waters.
