So, everyone knows that all the good players in the South Region
graduated last year, but who looks good this year?

I haven't been around to see which players have developed to be all-
region caliber players, but I have a pretty good handle on who's still
getting it done for their teams. So, lets talk about who to watch this
year in Austin.

My thoughts on all-region is that extra consideration should be given
to players who are playing for a spot at Nationals on Sunday. Teams in
contention on Sunday have to have deeper and more talented rosters,
where some of the guys who don't get talked about much are probably as
good or better than some of the stand outs on mediocre teams. As I see
it, the guys who stand out on teams playing on Sunday are the guys who
deserve to be talked about.

The locks:
Ryan Bigley, KU
Jeff Loskorn, UT
Andrew Walch, Tx St
and probably Matt Jackson, AR

Who else is in the mix?
Justin Kaminsky, KU
Aaron Hopwood, AR
Who's next in line at UT and TX St?
I imagine UNT will chime in about who's getting it done for them.
Who's carrying this Missouri team?
Has Evan Winnograd developed into this class at Wash U?
Will a Bama section team be in contention on Sunday so we can talk
about one of their standouts?
I know Kansas has some other guys who could play themselves into
notoriety.

Lets get this discussion going, because the South Regional thread is
not getting it done.

Tim Brady from Bama deserves to be in this discussion for
multiple reasons. This is the first year that Bama has a
chance to go to Nationals mainly due to the leadership and
work ethic that Tim brings to the table. Having coached Tim
for the past 2 years I can tell you that there is not one
player in the South region that works harder than Tim does.
Every single practice, scrimmage, or tournament Tim brings
it. At CCC, Tim dominated Delaware's top player as well as
many other players at that tournament helping Bama go from
being ranked dead last to finishing 6th with over 8 teams
from Nationals competing. If you get a chance to watch Tim
play he has all the tools to be an all-region player. He
has every throw in the book, his cuts are sharp and timing
is perfect. Defensively, he rarely gets broken,
consistently gets lay out d's and can sky with the best of
them. I know that the Bama section rarely gets their credit
but it will be a shame if Tim is not in the running for
all-region.

Hopwood should be a lock. He is better than jackson but since he is
quiet no one knows who he is.

Glad to see someone getting thrown under the bus in the
All-Region thread... even if they're on my team and my
brother is doing the throwing. If there were only one
Arkansan to pick this year, then it should be Casey Hooper.

Tim Brady played as well against us as anyone in the South.
Also, I can tell you that noone on Arkansas is working very
hard, so he's definitely outworking us. I'm talking about
Every single practice, scrimmage, or tournament is dictated
by the adversity we face. Our tent is quick to fold.

I thought Vinny on Kansas was their main cog, but my hand
still hurts. So he lost my vote. Ed "Freight Train"
Freiner on Tx State will be open a lot in Austin. Paul on
Mizzou is good for one sectional win against Arkansas each
year. Justin had a pretty phenomenal grab against us.

This thread will probably be more interesting after
Regionals.

I'm willing to get on the Tim Brady bandwagon despite the
homer nomination. He's the best player on a vastly improved
team, and kept 'Bama in the game against us at Joint Summit.

A name not known but should be is Matt Butler from TX State. This guy
will have you in fits yelling at your most experienced senior telling
him to not get beat force side under. Only problem is, when he gives
him a 5 yard cushion under (which is the only way to even have a
chance at stopping him, chances are he'll still beat you under) he'll
burn you deep by 25 yards. You're shit out of luck if it's a hospital
throw, you better run away or your gonna have his crotch in your face
as he skies you and makes you run home crying to your mother.

I disagree with the idea that extra consideration should be
given to those still playing at a spot at Nationals on
Sunday. Of course most of the time these teams already have
the best players, but just because a mid level player on a
deeper roster may be as talented as a player on a team that
finishes in the middle of the pack doesn't mean he's as
deserving. The talented player on the more average team is
more often called upon to carry the load, play more points,
and do more for his team than the other player on the higher
level team.

I'm really only familiar with Ozark section players, I'd say
Bigley and Hopwood should be locks, but don't discount
players from smaller schools. Like Tyler Samuel from
Harding. He's probably not a candidate for all region
(though he should be for second team), but he's the reason
Harding is at Regionals. He is their offense. He's also the
reason Harding almost beat North Texas at Regionals last
year.

So don't discount the little guys so quickly.

I'll only mention who I have watched.

Andrew Walch - Texas St.
Ryan Roberts - Texas St.
Matthew Butler - Texas St.

Jeff Loskorn - Texas

Ryan Bigley - Kansas
Justin Kaminsky - Kansas

Yeti - Texas A&M

David Brooks - UNT
Peter Palace - UNT
Fast Tall Guy - UNT

Greg Muth - Texas Tech
Cameron Johnson - Texas Tech

Two guys from Kansas St whose names I never knew:
-Little Fella with bright shoes
-Taller guy, had brown sleeves when Texas St. Played them,
#4 jersey i believe

Evan Winograd - Wash U

I'm sorry I missed seeing many of the other candidates play,
I'm sure those usual suspects from Arkansas are worthy as
always

FOTY - Will Driscoll - Texas, this is hard bc no one knows
who is a freshman and who is just a new face, but Will is a
true freshman. Big Blondie, splits pulling duty, fun to
watch, I recommend it.

K-State guys are seniors Pat Shriwise (#4) and Cameron
Hunter (#15). Both are excellent ultimate players with even
better attitudes, guys I'd have on my team any day.

Evan Winograd deserves a shrine built to commemorate his
completed 25ish-yard greatest for a goal he threw against us
Sunday at sectionals.

Hopwood's been injured for Arkansas--I think having him may
have changed the equation against KU in the sectional semis,
but we'll just have to wait til regionals to see.

Haven't seen a whole lot of the Texas teams, but Walch is a
sure lock, as should be Bigley from Kansas.

Also, all my OU guys are too shy to say anything about
themselves, so I'd like to point out a few worth notice:

--Freshmen Parker Dooly (#10) and Chris Larberg (#17) have
contributed to our O and D-lines this year, respectively.
Parker's a tall, calm presence who's constantly open
underneath in the middle of the field and Chris is this
year's Player Most Likely To Break His Neck Getting a
Highly-Improbably Layout D, thanks to his freakish closing
speed and leaping ability.

--Watch out for senior Nate Crain on OU's O-line. 6'4'' and
creative with his throws, he's a tough assignment--a big
part of our success on offense.

Missouri's achievements so far this year have been thanks to
two great players that deserve nominations for all-region
teams.

Allen Jones: number 10, senior offensive captain and middle
handler for the MUtants. This guy is the real deal, after
helping bring One Trick Pony to club nationals over the
summer on their O-line. Allen has been a main contributor
for the MUtants this year and is a player no one wants to
guard. Allen runs Missouri's offense and never stops moving,
he can get the disk where ever he wants and get off any
throw he wants, he touches the disk at least every third
throw and still accounts for almost none of the turnovers.
Watch this guy in a game when he is up against the best, and
he takes over the game even more.

Paul Adkisson: number 25, senior defensive captain for the
Mutants. Since he started as a freshman at Missouri the
MUtants hadn't been to regionals in a very long time, named
captain his sophomore year brought the team to regionals
that year for the first time and the two years since, now
improving the team to second in the section. Paul is known
quite well around the Ozarks section as Missouri's go to
guy, but hasn't had a chance to shine at the top of the
region just because he hadn't had time to build up the
players around him yet. (Hopefully could be different this
year) At sectionals two weeks back he was the soul of the
defense skying people down field, layout d's in the endzone,
and then picking up the disc and throwing the break huck
score or just being the steadfast go-to guy in the offense.
Whatever Missouri do at regionals, Paul will be the one
leading them there.

Watch these guys at regionals and you'll see some impressive
stuff, maybe they don't get all region, but they for sure
should be in consideration.

4 players from the ozarks come to mind:

Hopwood is a lock from Arkansas - always gives us trouble
except for one game during sectionals per year

Ryan Bigley from Kansas plays like there is no tomorrow -
that's usually the way I feel when I go to Lawrence too.

Paul Adkisson from Mizzou - extremely valuable on both sides
of the disc when he isn't crabby-face.

Allen Jones from Mizzou - has some sort of circus frisbee
blood and got real good working with OTP this past fall and
playing in Mixed Nationals.

I really don't know names outside the Ozarks, but here are some of the
Ozarks players who I think should get mentioned:

Kansas:
Bigley, should be a def lock for all-region, plenty has been said
already
Vinny, will break people at his own mercy and is a throwing threat
anywhere on the field

Mizzou:
Paul Adkisson, great throws, great D, great leader
Allen Jones, all around player who has carried Mizzou on his back in
the crucial points when needed.

Oklahoma:
Lyle, super tall who can always be depended on catching the disc.
Definitely a threat in the air.

Arkansas:
Hopwood, I think enough has been said about him. He's kept the
tradition of sick super athletes playing in Fayetteville.
Jones Clemons, super solid handle, has one of the most unstoppable
forehands in the section and is a tall guy that knows how to bid
Matt Jackson, Knows the game well, always in the right spot on the
field on both O and D, has some legendary bids

WashU:
Evan, should also be a lock, plenty said.

K State:
Pat Shriwise, a player you can only hope to contain. Perfect cuts,
perfect throws, great D. This man is as solid as it gets. Should
definitely be getting out from under the radar.

SLU:
Henry Samson, sluut's leader for several years now, has amazing
athletic ability as well as true ultimate knowledge. Also has great
endurance and can play every point from the beginning of a tourney to
the end.

Missouri S&T:
Nick Brackley, super athletic ability with the ability to compete in
the sky with anyone. Break throws at will.

Truman St:
Caleb Stanek, even though not in regionals, jujitsu has made plenty of
national noise on the back of him. Supreme defender who can contain
top players on any team. Knows the game well, is a great leader, a
great sport, and should be a role model to younger players everywhere.

FOTY:

This year texas has a bunch of freshmen talent and 3 of them stand
out, having already stepped into big roles on the field.

#45 Will Driscoll: tall, fast, and can jump, smart with the disc and
has started pulling for us some

#17 Chris Brooks: all around player, solid throws, has big pulls and
plays a defensive handler role

#57 Mitchell "Cell Block" Bennett: fast, quick cutter, often wears the
doo rag, shuts you down on D and cuts you up on O

I think any one of these guys would be very deserving of FOTY. Be
sure to watch for them at regionals.

Top 7:

Bigley KU - Great player

Loskorn UT - Played first point all season at sectionals, he may just
will UT to a bid in Austin.

Walch TXSt - He's had to stick back and handle this year due to
graduations and has done a good job of moving the disc and still
finding a way to go deep. Good Luck State.

Matt Jackson ARK - Guys insanely hard to cover, good luck.

Hopwood ARK - Didn't know Hopwood was back, scary, if one doesn't
make 1st team will get second.

Winograd WashU - 2008 Worlds Junior and 2009 Co-FoTY, 2010 All-Region
is next in line.

Zach Riggins UNT - RZA is unstoppable going deep and in. Co-FoTY last
year, UNT will hope for him to help carry the load.

FoTY - Chwis Brooks UT - Best player out of Texas high school Ultimate
the past 3 years (along with Winograd). Extremely talented on a team
of underclassmen, he'll have to step up to help DJ get UT a bid.

2nd Team consids:

Peter Palace UNT

Matt Butler TxSt

Kaminsky KU

Will Campbell UT

Those guys from Mizzou, seem to have some say in the MU's 3rd seed.

FoTY - Will Driscoll UT - other extremely talented freshman on UT.

Don't know too much about Texas or Bama sections, but Walch
should be a lock.

A few who I think deserve mention from the Ozarks:

Pat Shriwise, K-State. Great player with a great attitude.
K-State offense runs through him. He's a classy guy too,
I'd let him take my mom out to dinner.

Jones from Arkansas. The guy is an offensive beast. When
he's on, he can run the table against just about anyone.

Lyle Clark, OU. 6'4 and extremely athletic, Lyle is one of
the Ozark section's rising stars. He's going to be coming
down with a lot of discs at regionals.

2nd Team:

Falkor T. Luckdragon, OU. He may not be the tallest player
on the field, but he's the emotional and spiritual leader of
our team.

It's looking like an interesting year in the South region.
Hope everybody stays injury free for regionals, good luck
all.

Brooks is right DJ really does have what it takes to carry Texas to
Nationals

Hopwood and Walch are locks.

Depending on how Wash U end ups on Sunday Evan should definitely be in
consideration

If Kansas can make it to semis it will be because of strong plays from
Gary Gareis #9, who like Hopwood doesn't talk very much but makes
great plays, watch out for his layout Ds to set him apart from the
competition. Also Vinny Ciaramitaro #14, his breaks are just stupid.

Since the regional competition is so close this year the last couple
spots really all depends who can elevate their game May 1-2 and get
their team to Nationals

Seems as though EVERYONE has forgotten about Texas A&M!!

Carson Ryan (#17) scored 5 of the first 8 points against Rice in the
semis at Sectionals. BTW, A&M went on to Finals at sectionals.

There is no doubt that Carson Ryan scores close to half of all of
A&M's points and throws about 1/3 of them. There's very few people who
can keep up with his speed and those that can still get beat to the
disc. He's every other even if you put your best player on him.

Rice: Wilson Cauley. Great throws, big ups, and gets lay-out D's
consistently.

FOTY: Chris Brooks, easy pick.

Butler (unstoppable every which way) TXst
Matt Jackson Ark
Peter Palace (extremely firey, tenacious defender) UNT
DJ (played his heart out despite having no legs) UT
Justin Kaminsky (really ran the O for KU) KU
Evan Winograd (didn't see, but have seen and he works it) WashU

FoTY: Will Driscoll

2nd Team:
Ed Freiner (came back for the 5th and did it right) TXst
Zach Riggins (scoring on most points he played) UNT
Darius Tse (if you played UNT you know him, he gets any disc near
him) UNT
Will Driscoll (only a freshman, but was absolutely carrying UT's deep
game) UT
Ken Soo (really underrated, plays great D and insane handling) UT
Jones (Great throws and controls O) Ark
_________ - fill in blank

FoTY: Chwis Brooks - one of 3 freshman (driscoll and mitch) put on O-
line point down 9-10 against KU. Has the UT handler skillset with a
bit of (UNT) flare. Keep up the good work.

Andrew Walch- TX St
Ryan Bigley- KU
DJ Loskhorn- TX
Aaron Hopwood- Arkansas
Ed Freiner- TX St
Nate Crain- Oklahoma
Matt Jackson- Arkansas

Will Driscoll- TX

State's point diff this weekend was 60-25 (score reporter shows an
incorrect total of 28 total points scored on state).

This was in part due to Harding playing one hell of a first round, and
mainly because the O of Ryan Roberts (Deuce), Andrew Walch, and Matt
Butler was amazing. I heard the opponent's sidelines each game repeat
"they are doing the same thing every time!" And they did without
interruption.
On the D-side, Edward Freiner, Travis Goyeneche (Bolts), and Blake
Knight all made big stops and punched it in for many breaks.

Obviously, not all are going to be considered for All-Region, I just
thought these players should be known if not already.

Vinny, Gary, and Bigley stood out on Kansas for me.

I didn't see much of UT but I know that they had a really, really
strong recruiting year.

Riggins from UNT.

Arkansas squads are always fan favorites making big grabs, throws and
layouts. Matt Jackson, Jones, Casey Hooper, Hopwood, all fun to watch.

Andrea Ritchie played with the guy's team at Open Centex.
Actually she helped us score our only upwinder in the only
team the men's team won.

I hope she is considered for all-region on the women's side.
She frequently led a team that was savage as a handler,
deep threat, and deep deep in zones. She was always running
fast and never very tall. Surely someone (KU guys{Daka,
bigley}?, Max from Doublewide) can remember the little girl
on Arkansas doing many good things for them that landed them
2nd at Sectionals.

Look for Courtney Walbe on Arkansas next year, but this year
was owned by Andrea Ritchie's athleticism. Last year she
was the best athlete at Showdown tryouts and this year she
joins the group of jaded Arkansas athletes who never excel
after college.

Finishes are a bit of a skewed way to determine strength. Especially
in a region where the majority of bids go to one section. The Ozark
Section knocked out four of its own teams in the first or second place
bracket, Bama knocked out one of its own, and the Texas Section didn't
face each other at all. In the first round Bama went 1-2 (.333),
Ozarks 5-3 (.625), Texas 2-3 (.400), with no intra-sectional matches.
In the second round Bama went 1-2 (.250), Ozarks 3-5 (.375), Texas 4-1
(.800). All three of the Ozark wins in the second round come against
other Ozark teams and the two losses not against in-section opponents
are St. Louis vs. Texas and Harding vs. Texas St. Overall, in Texas
vs. Ozarks match-ups, the record is Texas 11 - Ozarks 8.

Conclusion -- you don't want to play Harding in the first round.

Yeah I realize this has been beat to death already and I'm really not
bringing too much new to the discussion but here goes.

Walch- Tx St
Butler- Tx St
DJ-Tx
Bigley- KU
Hopwood- UoA
Jackson- UoA
Nate Crain- OU

Like I said nothing too surprising. Nate has received some
recognition already in other posts. The guy was huge in our game
against Texas and made some huge skys and a pretty sick layout for
scores. He was responsible for most of our goals on the weekend and
really stepped it up in the big games.

Foty: Parker Dooly-OU The guy came in as a freshman and immediately
played nearly every point on our O line. He has been solid all year
and I think most importantly made great decisions whenever he had the
disc. He seemed to be always open all year and deserves some
recognition. Hes the baby faced blonde guy with the red hat. (Not
Falkor)
Chris Larberg- OU. Again another freshman that came in and had an
immediate impact for the D. He has some crazy layout Ds and is super
fast. He may not be a polished thrower quite yet but more than makes
up for that with his pure athleticism. Hes the guy that got his elbow
stepped on in the Texas game.
Both of these guys were a big reason for OU's improvement from last
year. Going from sneaking into regionals to finishing T5.
There are tons of people in the region that probably deserve these
awards but these are the folks that I felt stepped up and really
performed at Regionals.

Nate was great against State as well as yourself Mike. I
think one of the two of you was at the end of every score
against us.

can't say too much about all-region simply because i don't keep up
with it or watch other teams much, but seeing as this was my last
rodeo i'm going to give this a miserable try:

#25 - mizzou (paul?)
loskorn - texas
bigley - kansas
justin k - kansas
walch - tx state
freiner - tx state (you could call at least two others on an all-
region line from state...butler, duece)
matt j - arkansas (tough call. hopwood rightfully deserves
recognition, as do others on that team like boy and jones)

FOTY: will - texas

nods:
vinny - kansas
jake white - arkansas
riggins - unt
brooks - unt
shultz (s/p?) - lsu

great competition in the South, and look forward to the developments
ahead. wish i knew more about other teams like Bama, Harding, OU, and
WashU as i'm sure they've got stellar players holding it down...the
above is just what i've witnessed.

did want to make it clear and explicit that i remember KU's support
during UNT's quarterfinal appearance at nationals and it was very much
appreciated. i won't be in madison, so i'd like to extend my support
to your team here - turn the tide of your performance on the big stage
and turn some heads. i'm echoing the sentiment that your program
(along with texas) has been a beacon for this region. i did love our
battles.

major congratulations to tx state - it's been a long time coming
fellas. keep it going in madison, i'll be rooting from afar.

thanks to the entire region (coaches, players, hecklers, TDs, etc) for
making the South what it is - great competition, immature testosterone
checks, and banged up livers.

Thank you for clearing that up Peter, I enjoyed our matchup alot in
Semis.

Seconded about Andrea Ritchie she is better than most guys in our
section. Other than Ajax, jacob perry learned everything he knows
about ultimate from Andrea. Betty standouts include: Emily Hadel a
second year player whose speed and intelligence has transformed her
into one heck of a Betty Captain and ulty-player. Watch out for up-n-
comers, Christy Ching: very speedy and has hops like a boy; Natalie,
tall and has great hands. Madde Webbe, huge layout bids all over the
place. Watch out for Betty in coming years the seeds have been sown
this year to make Betty way more competitive.

Nods go to:
#40 - Harding (big part of this teams success these past two
years. keep fighting guys, you're one of the reasons this region is
getting stronger.)
Tyler - Harding
#33 - Miss State (smart poacher and good puts, a lot of athletes
and throwers on this squad. I forget the numbers of the other 2-3 guys
that stood out in our game.)
Pat #4 - KState (has plenty of cheeky throws and can get
horizontal really quickly.)
Paul #25 - MIzz
Jones - UofA
Gary #9 - KU (one of the finest gentlemen I've come to know in
my long time in college, a true ultimate player, who values
sportsmanship and team play above all else.)
Bruce #21 - KU (all I can say is he is better than KK in his second
year of playing than KK was in his second year, The south better watch
out for him.)
Will Tullos - TxState (that is one big athletic body, he looked
way more comfortable with the disc than just playing for a semester)
Red headed kid - TxState (way to rise up and catch the game winner
in finals, much improved sportsmanship since Centex, aswell. shout
out to Holly if that is infact your sister.)

All I can say now is I hope hotpants makes an appearance, he is way
more funny than JDo.

Thanks for all the memories,
Ryan "finally done" Bigley

Tip of the hat to:

Mike Rice, who threw more than half the points OU's O-line
scored throughout the year.

Arkansas' athletic dudes, we all know who they are.

UNT for making semis after being seeded 14th (although I
think we all knew they were better than 14th).

Evan Winograd, for throwing the years coolest greatest at
sectionals.

Wag of the finger to:

State's foty candidate Will Tullos, who clearly isn't aware
of the well established rule that ultimate players taller
than 6'5 must be slow and unathletic.

OU's foty candidate Chris Larberg, whose ridiculously high,
injury-inducing, bizarre looking bids make it clear that he
does not care one bit whether he lives or dies. You have so
much to live for, Chris.

And we wonder why KU never does well at nationals...
