Well first off I wanted to thank all the teams that participated in
the first annual Down With The Clown. We ended up with 10 teams in
both the Mixed Division and Open Division. Good luck reading all of
this. I will start with the open division first.

Open Division

Well the 1 and 2 seeds which were Machine split squads had no trouble
on day 1. The only upsets were the 8/9 game which was Kalamazoo Alumni
over Totally Hammered (Decatur, IN). I don’t know what happened in
the Pool A Real Huck vs. Tuxedo game, but I believe I heard that
Tuxedo won that for 2nd place in the pool, could be wrong there. Pool
B had one upset which was Late Arrival (Western Mich and Eastern Mich)
vs. Foreign Five (which was a High school team I heard). From what I
hear, Foreign Five had the privilege of picking up 30 years of
experience and added Frank Huguenard for Saturday. From what I was
told, in the first round Foreign Five faced off against one of the
Machine split squads (Pulley). After going down 7-0, Frank convinced
the team that forfeiting the game at that point and allowing him to
teach them how to play by doing some drills until the next game was a
good idea. They did forfeit and they started drilling. Foreign Five
was grateful for this and really liked Franks help, he taught them a
lot on Day 1 from what I heard.

Quarters (Wind was very strong all day Sunday):
Pulley over Late Arrival
Real Huck 15 over Midnight Meat Train 8
Lever over Kalamazoo Alumni
Beachfront Property 15 over Tuxedo 8

Semis:
Pulley over Real Huck
Lever 15 over Beachfront Property 7

Finals:
Well this was a heated battle between the two Machine split squads.
The winner was to get the big trophy and the loser was to get the
smaller trophy that ended up breaking and was just the base of a
trophy.
Final score Pulley over Lever 13-8

Down With The Clown Dischoops crown (Showcase Event)

I am sorry to say but we did not get any footage of the event and I
don’t have any pictures. If anyone has any pictures please send them
to me at southbendultimate (at) gmail (dot) com. I would love to put
them on the website. Well, Frank set up the game field and took some
time to teach all the players how to play. Frank was reffing and
after 10 or so minutes of teaching the game was on. This was my first
time seeing dischoops and it is very entertaining to watch. There was
plenty of heckling from the sidelines as each team had one person in
the game. I was supposed to keep score but the beer in my hand ended
up being way more important after a long first day. It looked as if
all the players had a blast, but there were a couple great players
that picked up the game. I would say that the guy wearing the Mateen
Cleaves jersey and Gary Ledonne were the two best to watch. Frank
handed out dischoops shirts to the two MVP’s chosen by him but I don’t
recall who those people were. After awhile Frank himself even got in
the game himself to show how it was done. He was by far the only one
that really dribbled and that seemed to be a huge advantage in the
game. Thanks to all the players that played in the showcase event. A
special thanks to Frank Huguenard for setting everything up with me
and making a great showcase event happen.

Party

The party was at a Polish lodge which was about 3 miles from the
field. Things started at around 8pm and there were 4 kegs to finish.
After teams started arriving it occurred to me that in all the crap I
did last week in setting up the tournament and party I forgot one big
thing, to tell all the teams that this was only an over 21 party. I
want to apologize to every team for not making that clear in any of
the emails. That was a big botch on my part. This lodge was a place
I grew up at and knew the owners and bartenders and all the regulars.
I wasn’t going to screw things up by letting in a few underage people
and put the bar at risk. The rules of the place were, there were no
rules. Teams picked up on this quickly and tables were moved and
about 4 beer pong games started. Music started up (thanks whoever put
in their IPOD and took control of the music. The bar already had a
shuffle board, dartboard, golden tee, and pool table. After the first
hour, some girl went around and said she wanted to get the biggest
flip cup game going. She succeded and it looked about a 20 on 20 flip
cup game that was intense. The lodge has two rooms to it and in the
other room was a wedding reception. Some of the wedding people even
came over to play in some of the flip cup and beer pong games. And
when the bride came in the room everyone started cheering , it was
pretty funny. I believe someone even got her to make a few throws in
a beer pong game. After a long night and 3 ½ kegs. The music was
still loud and I looked around at a room that was trashed and I saw
one team remaining that was dancing their asses off to Michael
Jackson. That team was Muff n’ Men from Pittsburgh, the winners of
the party for sure!!! They didn’t just have one or two remaining
people they had 10-15 people still partying it up. Great work Muff n’
Men. Once again I am sorry for the botch about not letting teams know
about no underage at this party. I hope everyone that attended had a
great time.

Mixed Division

I believe I can speak a lot more about the mixed division because I
played in it. The seedings of the mixed division were solely based on
the results from last years regionals. It seemed that not much has
changed between the teams in Pool A as that pool went as seeded on day
1. The one seed (Gambit) started their season off right with a 13-0
win vs. the #5 seed Sneak Dragon out of Milwaukee. Their next game
was against the #3 seed Hybrid and this as a DGP game with Gambit
pulling it out 12-11. Gambit won their next two games close 11-9 and
12-9. So although they went 4-0 on the day they had a lot of close
games and hopefully had the legs for Sunday. The other big game of
this pool was to be Muff n’ Men (Pittsburgh) vs. Hybrid (Ann Arbor).
These two teams are both very good and have never faced each other.
It seems that since this is Muff n’ Men’s third tournament of the year
that extra experience was enough and beat Hybrid 11-9.

Quarters (Sunday was very windy)

Gambit played another fairly close game in their quarterfinals but
ended with the win 13-10 over Skyway (Chicago).

The biggest battle in quarters was Hybrid vs. Steamboat(Cincinnati).
Two great teams that had great battles last year. With the score tied
10-10 the soft cap went on, Hybrid pulling, game to 12. This point
was very long with both teams struggling in the wind. Both teams
tried to get field position by hucking deep and hoping for a turn on
the other end. Both teams kept hucking and Hybrid finally put it in.
11-10 Hybrid. Next point was much of the same thing with both teams
putting it in the very strong crosswind so they wouldn’t turn it on
their end. The hard cap went on and Steamboat now needed to score or
the game was over. Hybrid, who always plays a close game, used that
experience and put it in. Hybrid 12 – Steamboat 10. They were to get
the rematch they wanted vs. Gambit in the semis.

The Abusement Park (South Bend) vs. Scurvy (Columbus) faced off and
Scurvy came out strong keeping it close at 3-3 and won a long point to
go up 4-3. The Abusement Park kept their composure and stepped up the
intensity and only giving up one more point the rest of the game. TAP
15 – Scurvy 5.

Muff n’ Men faced off against Prion (Champaign) in the last quarter
who picked up Tania Reitz, who was a star for the Illinois womens team
who just got off a trip to nationals. Muff n’ Men after a late night
were ready to play and won 14-8.

Semis
As I said before , Hybrid got what they wanted, a rematch against
Gambit, who beat them on DGP in pool play. This game looked intense
all the way through and with such a strong wind all day Sunday hucks
were going up left and right so as to not turn on their side of the
field. This game traded points most of the game but Hybrid got the
break they needed to pull it out 10-8 and revenge for the loss in pool
play.

The Abusement Park vs. Muff n’ Men was the other semi. I will say
more about these two teams and the party a bit later. These two teams
came out with a bunch of intensity. With the strong wind, both teams
played zone and hucks went up as usual to save field position. Muff
n’ Men started the game off strong by getting the D and score to go up
1-0. The teams traded and it was 2-1 M n’ M. Something then sparked
in Park again and continued to roll of score after score to take have
8-2. Park didn’t falter at half and scored the first two of the half
before M n’ M got one back to make it 10-3. M n’ M got 2 of the next
three and it was 11-5 park. Park amped it up the rest of the game and
ended it 15-5. Very strong showing for Park against of very good
Pittsburgh team. If it weren’t for the strong wind this game would
have been very different.

Finals was going to be another battle between Hybrid and The Abusement
Park. The teams have had quite a short history, with 3 games vs. each
other last year. All 3 games were double game point with Hybrid up in
the series 2-1. Hybrid this year picked up 4 players from last years
Park team so these two teams know each other well and both wanted to
win, especially in the finals of the first tournament for both of
them. Park would start on O. Hybrid came out pumped and started the
game by getting the D and score to go up 1-0. They did the same thing
in the next point to go up 2-0 and already had The Abusement park on
their heels. Park kept the composure and tied the game at 2-2. Park
started to play better and even went up 4-3 to get the game back on
serve. The wind still being strong, both teams were putting the disc
a lot as most teams had all day. Hybrid gets two in a row to go up
5-4. Park puts 4 in the endzone in a row to take half 8-5 and had all
the confidence in the world. Hybrid wasn’t worried and fought hard to
start the second half and took the first 2 points. 8-7 Park. Park
got 2 in a row back to go up 10-7. Two in a row again by Hybrid put
the score at 10-9. It was just another one of those damn good battles
between these two teams and neither team was going to give up. The
soft cap went on and it was to be a game to 12. Hybrid gets their
third point in a row to tie it at 10’s. Right after the score, the
hard cap went on and guess what…..another double game point in the
Hybrid vs. TAP series, imagine that. The fourth time in four games.
This was a long brutal point with Hybrid getting it on their goal line
3 times and couple shots that went over the head of a player or
drifted to far in the strong wind. One of the Hybrid girls even put
her body way out there to try and pull one down but had to be carried
off the field. It was a great effort and I hope she is alright. The
wind was a strong crosswind but it was a little more downwind for
Hybrid and TAP couldn’t get the zone working up-wind. It wasn’t until
Kreece from TAP put up a huge forehand through the cup deep to Geoff
that floated perfectly and Geoff pulled it in to give TAP the
Championship, the big trophy, and to even the series at two a piece
between hybrid (with a 0 point diff!!).

I want to thank all the teams that showed up and I hope everyone had a
great time. Next year should be even better!!
